How Tanabata is Comparable to UlquiHime

Why/How UlquiHime is relatable to Tanabata?

First, let’s get the definition of what ‘Tanabata’ is.

Based on wiki:

Tanabata (七夕) (meaning "Evening of the Seventh") is a Japanese star festival, derived from the Chinese star festival, Qi Xi (七夕) ("The Night of Sevens").

It celebrates the meeting of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair). The Milky Way, a river made from stars that crosses the sky, separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. Since the stars come out at night, the celebration is held at night.

Like Qi Xi and Chilseok, Tanabata was inspired by the famous Chinese folklore, The Princess and the Cowherd:

Orihime (織姫) (Weaving Princess) the daughter of the Tentei (天帝) (Sky King, or the universe itself) wove beautiful clothes by the bank of the Milky Way (天の川) (Amanogawa River). Her father loved the cloth that she wove and so she worked very hard every day to weave it. However, she was sad that because of her hard work she could never meet and fall in love with anyone. Concerned about his daughter, Tentei arranged for her to meet Hikoboshi (彦星) (Cow Herder Star) sometimes called Kengyuu (牽牛) (Chinese name of Hikoboshi) who lived and worked on the other side of the Amanogawa River (Milky Way). When the two met, they fell instantly in love with each other and were shortly married. However, once married, Orihime no longer would weave cloth for Tentei and Hikoboshi allowed his cows to stray all over Heaven. In anger, Tentei separated the two lovers across the Amanogawa River and forbade them to meet. Orihime became despondent at the loss of her husband and asked her father to let them meet again. Tentei was moved by his daughter’s tears and allowed the two to meet on the 7th day of the 7th month if Orihime worked hard and finished her weaving. The first time they tried to meet, however, they found that they could not cross the river because there was no bridge. Orihime cried so much that a flock of magpies came and promised to make a bridge with their wings so that she could cross the river. If it rains, the magpies cannot come and the two lovers must wait till next year.

There are also other versions of the story varied in China, but I decided to follow the story of this one above. There’s one more thing to note that Tanabata is also called “Continual Rain Day” because every year, when they meet each other, they cry and cry and cry. Their tears fall down from the sky and make a special kind of rain on this day.

In present-day Japan, people generally celebrate this day by writing wishes, sometimes in the form of poetry, on tanzaku (短冊), small pieces of paper, and hanging them on bamboo, sometimes with other decorations. The bamboo and decorations are often set afloat on a river or burned after the festival, around midnight or on the next day.

The original Tanabata date was based on the Japanese lunisolar calendar, which is about a month behind the Gregorian calendar. As a result, some festivals are held on July 7, some are held on a few days around August 7, while the others are still held on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the traditional Japanese lunisolar calendar, which is usually in August in the Gregorian Calendar.

OK, enough with all of the Tanabata facts. Let’s get on Bleach with Ulquihime.

Starting with Orihime facts:

Inoue Orihime (井上 織姫)

The kanji for Orihime’s name is the same as the Tanabata’s Weaving Princess’s name. It was so obvious that Kubo Tite used the Weaving Princess name for his main female protagonist name.

Inoue means "well", "above" or "up". This also refers for the fact that in Tanabata story, Orihime is the daughter of the Tentei (The Sky King) who obviously lives above/up on the sky (Heaven). There’s no talk about her parents, but Orihime was said as an orphan in the beginning of the series. So which mean her parents are deceased (to Heaven). One more thing to note in Bleach, Orihime’s brother’s name is Sora (昊) which means “the sky” itself.

In volume 1, chapter 5 cover, the word “Vega”, a star that symbolizes Orihime the weaver princess from the Tanabata legend, is printed to show the connection.

So it was so obvious that even from her name to her origin, Inoue Orihime was relatable to Tanabata’s Orihime.

Also, Aizen who’s a main villain in Bleach also refers himself as God “who will stand above Heaven.” He took his interest in Orihime’s god-like power and ordered his people to kidnap her. Anyway, whatever it is, somehow Aizen becomes Orihime’s daddy-long-legs, and Orihime has to work for his sake (even if she’s unwilling).

And another thing, if I could refer Kubo Tite also a GOD (because he was the one who created Bleach), Orihime is unlikely his own daughter. And every father loved to cause his own daughter suffered and grow up to be his bride.

Next is Orihime’s poem in volume 3,

“If I were the rain,
Could I connect with someone heart,
As the rain can unite
The eternally separated earth and sky?”

Some fan said this poem is Orihime’s distributed for Ichigo’s “Memory of the Rain” Arc in that volume. But we know that Kubo Tite likes foreshadowing, and nobody ever said it could only means for one person. Poem is usually for ambiguous. But we will talk about that in another day. All I want to say is this poem can be relate to the fact that Orihime wished herself to be the rain to unite the earth and the sky, to connect with someone heart. We know in Tanabata’s story, Tentei separated the two lovers across the Milky Way which means Orihime is on the Sky side while Hikoboshi is on the Earth side. Orihime cried for the loss of her husband. Tentei was moved by his daughter’s tears and allowed the two to meet. The first time they tried to meet, however, they found that they could not cross the river because there was no bridge. Orihime cried so much that a flock of magpies came and promised to make a bridge with their wings so that she could cross the river. If it rains, the magpies cannot come and the two lovers must wait till next year. One more thing to know is that their tears are actually the rain itself. For that reason, I kind of twisted her poem like “If I could shed my tear, could I connect with someone heart, as the rain of tear can unite the eternally separated two different beings?” It shout out Tanabata-totally-related to me.

Next is about Ulquiorra facts:

First off his name, "Ulquiorra", sounds very similar to the Spanish "El Que Llora" meaning "He who cries" He has teal lines that descend from his eyes, making it appear as if he is crying. His facial expression rarely changes, and he is almost always frowning.

It not much relates but I did say that on Tanabata, when Orihime and Hikoboshi meet each other, they cry and cry and cry. Perhap his tear-streak trademark has something to do with that because Ulquiorra is emotionless himself.

The horn of his mark is somehow similar as the bull’s horn. Hikoboshi is the Cow Herder.

Some version in Tanabata story told that Hikoboshi is just a low-life, commoner, cow herder, who worked on the other side of the Milky Way for The Sky King, hence, God. If you read Orihime facts above that Aizen also refers himself as God, Ulquiorra is a Hollow (in any term, it can be refers that less than human, or a monster) which was evolved into Arrancar by Aizen. Ulquiorra is Aizen’s lapdog.

Ulquiorra’s Zanpakutō’s name is Murciélago (黒翼大魔) (ムルシエラゴ) (Spanish for "Bat", Japanese for "Black-Winged Great Demon")
Murciélago was a famous bull from Joaquin del Val di Navarra's farm, partly responsible for the fame of the Miura breeders. On October 5, 1879 he fought in Córdoba, Spain with Rafael Molina Sanchez, "El Lagartijo." He went after the picadores 24 times, with a rare courage. For this display Murciélago was spared the usual fate of death in the arena. He was given as a gift from El Lagartijo to Don Antonio Miura, who mated him with 70 cows. His line, now called the Miura line, still exists and is famous for its ferocity and courage.
This fact adds more to the relation between Ulquiorra, The Cow-Named-Sword Wielder and Hikoboshi, The Cow Herder.

Its release command is "Bind" (鎖せ) (Tozase). If you get the meaning of the word “Bind” which is to tie, to connect, to unite together. It totally relates to the fact in Tanabata, the lovers will be able to meet each other.

When it released, Murciélago unleashes with a burst of spiritual energy that falls around Ulquiorra as black rain. And Tanabata is connected to the special kind of rain which is made by tears of the lovers.

Like I said, the horns in his released form are similar as the bull’s horn.

His Arrancar attire becomes more form fitting and closed at the top, becoming more like a robe towards the bottom. In this form, he uses an energy spear instead of a sword. For some reason, I feel like his spear is similar as the staff of a cow herder in addition to his robe clothes, Ulquiorra is more like a cow herder from an ancient Hindu myth or Bible.

In his Resurrección: Segunda Etapa (2nd release), while he retains his black wings, his long white coat is gone, revealing a more defined musculature with his chest appearing as blood-like liquid is dripping from his Hollow hole, which becomes larger. It might be my over imagination but in the night sky with the crescent moon, the line mark-as blood-like liquid dripping from his Hollow hole in his chest is likely a Milky Way which divides the good (right side) and the bad (left side), if you could refer his hollow hole is the full moon.

In his 2nd release form, Ulquiorra's mask remains turn into horns; and it’s no doubt that is similar to the bull’s horns. His tail is also similar to the bull’s tail.

Ulquiorra is known to have vast spiritual power, and it increases quite a lot after releasing Murciélago, but it's not until his Second Stage that his power becomes unbelievably great. Uryū Ishida, a Quincy who is an expert at sensing reiatsu, noted that the density of Ulquiorra's spiritual power was so vast that it could hardly be identified as reiatsu. "It's like no spiritual energy I've ever felt before...It's not just bigger or stronger. It's too dense and heavy to even be called spiritual energy. It feels like there's an ocean above the sky..."

Do you understand the meaning an ocean above the sky? What will happen if that ocean falls down to the Earth?

Answer: It will be RAIN and RAIN DAMN HARD.

Like I said, Tanabata and the rain are unlikely connected. If you could connect with Orihime’s rain poem in volume 3, you can see that Orihime who is a human girl living on the Earth, the living world wishing to be the rain that can connect the Earth and the Sky (Heaven). On the other hands, Ulquiorra who is a hollow living on the eternally sky night, the world of dead becomes the ocean above the sky and falls down to the earth. The act of connection by the rain totally related to Tanabata for the lovers’ desire to meet each other. They cry for not being together. The magpie accepts to help them build the bridge with a conditions that there’s no rain which means they shouldn’t cry. They cry one more when they finally met each other, and later the tears become the rain itself.

Final is Ulquihime and Tanabata’s story comparison.
I might state out eveything that Orihime and Ulquiorra are relatable to Tanabata’s story. (Kubo, Sora, Ichigo and Aizen also presented in the facts)

“Her father loved the cloth that she wove and so she worked very hard every day to weave it.” ( Tanabata’s story)

In Bleach, if it was Sora’s case, that sentence becomes “Her brother loved to hear her praying for him and so she prayed for him every day.” Or “Her brother loved the hairpins she wore and she wears them every day.”

If it was Aizen’s case, that sentence becomes “Her all-of-sudden-daddy-boss loved the power that she used and told her whether she could use it for his sake and so she tried hard to destroy it.”

Well, I did imply that Kubo is GOD above, so he just set up a whole arc for her character development. He loves her so much that he even design a female Arrancar uniform for her and made her wear in HM arc.

“However, she was sad that because of her hard work she could never meet and fall in love with anyone.” (Tanabata’s story)

In Bleach, it’s somewhat true. In Sora’s case, when she kept on praying for her brother, she would be sad every day. Not until Orihime met Tatsuki and was protect by her, she started to smile and live more happily.

It can be twisted in another way if we don’t count that Ichigo is just her fantasy crush, her normal fantasy, not real love at all.

Or maybe it rather becomes “However, she was sad that because of her hard work/training, she could never be able to be his support and let him see her strength and let him fall in love with her” with Ichigo’s case which means she didn’t get her crush ’s attention to her for her hard work at all.

In Aizen’s case, maybe it was because of her power that he kidnapped her, and she would never able to see her crush, Ichigo again or maybe because of Aizen who is a villian and she is on the good side, she could never be able to be together with Ulquiorra no matter how much hard word she did try to save everyone.

Somehow, it’s so true with Kubo. He did set up Ulquiorra met Orihime first, not the main male lead character, Ichigo. Same for Aizen who sent Ulquiorra to Kakakura Town to observe Ichigo, but Ulquiorra got to meet Orihime first. Later, Aizen ordered Ulquiorra abducted Orihime. In Ulquiorra’s eyes, Ichigo is “trash” who he doesn’t even want to care less for and Orihime is his “woman” who sudden has to be cared.

When the two met, they fell instantly in love with each other and were shortly married. (Tanabata’s story)

Well well, in Bleach, Ulquiorra indeed had interest in Orihime at the beginning. After getting his confession “Ore to koi, onna” together with threatening, Orihime can only say “Yes.” When she went to HM, she was placed in Ulquiorra’s care. She stayed in his quarter. He visits and feeds her every day. Doesn’t it look like a marriage life like? Later the fact that they realized each other feeling (chapter 353/354) is enough for that.

Well, Orihime only wears her Arrancar uniform, just to get Aizen’s trust. Her resolve is to destroy Aizen’s Hougyoku and stop the war. Later, Aizen announced he’d done with Orihime and she will be useless. Aizen only used Orihime as bait, and her role was already fulfilled. After that, Ulquiorra intentionally provoked a fight with Ichigo, and as everybody knew, in his released form he almost wrecked down Las Noches.

Yeah, he did, Kubo did that cruel separated thing.

Half part of Tanabata story already occured for Ulquihime. Now we have to wait for their reunion part if Kubo Title could make it the same in the story or not. Let’s see in the future.

The Info:

Who: Anybody, UlquiHime FC member or not, is welcome to participate in the festivities. Keep in mind, however, that any form of bashing, anti-ness, provocation, or otherwise will NOT be tolerated.

What: We will be hosting the 2009 UlquiHime Tanabata Celebration and Contest, a quasi-festival/competition held in honor of UlquiHime and its ties to the Japanese star festival. Have fun, play nice, and revel in the UO Tanabata vibe.

Where: The Celebration and Contest will be housed within the UlquiHime FC of Bleach Asylum.

When: Announcement and initiation is on June 7, and the end of the fan works submission Contest is on July 7. The latter date will be the day of the Celebration, where everyone is simply encouraged to chill out to UlquiHime and the Evening of the Seventh.

Why: Well, why not? The UlquiHime dynamic holds several ties to the festival, and as with the most recent scenes in chapters 352 and 352, our lovers have been separated once again. We hold firm to the belief that Ulquiorra (Hikoboshi) will be reunited with his Orihime in due time; for the rain has yet to truly fall, does it not?

The Rules:

or otherwise, will not be tolerated.

♥ All submissions should be relatable
to UlquiHime and Tanabata in some way.

♥ It would be prudent for those uninterested
or adverse to this pairing, or the event in and of itself,
to refrain from ruining the mood for others.

♥ Mature-themed submissions (M-17 and above) are acceptable
as long as a clear warning is given beforehand.

♥ Be positive and be sure to hand out plenty of
encouragement and reps.

♥ The main goal of this event is to have fun
and celebrate the Bleach ship of UlquiHime
through the festival of Tanabata.



The Contest:

We will be holding a fanworks contest for this year's celebration, where members who wish to participate may create a variety of UlquiHime/Tanabata-related fanworks and submit them into the contest.

There is a maximum of three submissions per category. Meaning that there is a maximum submission limit of eighteen submissions for the entire contest. Keep in mind, however, that this is a maximum. There is no minimum.

The Categories:

Written word - prose, verse, typography, & essays
3-D media - sculpture, sewing crafts, culinary art, etc....
Digital media - digital painting, sketches, banners, icons, etc....
Traditional media - watercolor, pencil sketches, (normal art mediums.)
Fan Videos - original material, MMV, & AMV
Misc. category - anything not fitting in the other groups

Submissions:

We're going to be splitting up six submission categories across a few days (from about July 5 to July 7), with Written word and 3-D media on the 5th, Digital media and Traditional media on the 6th, and then Fan Videos and Misc. on the 7th. People with submissions will send in their submissions on the corresponding days to whatever category their creations fit best.

Remember, please do not submit anything intended for the Contest until the intended date arrives (meaning, sometime around July 5, etc. We're still working on this, because we still have the time to do so).

Submissions shall occur via PM, in order to stem spamming up the FC with too much stuff. Again, more information will be released around July 5. ^^

The Prizes:

Yes, prizes will be involved for those who wish to participate in the Contest. We have several talented and generous authors and graphics artists who have volunteered to create some prizes for the winners of each contest category. ^^

The Judges:

Judging positions are no longer open. Judges won't be needed until the end of the event, but I had no qualms with hiring any now. We will need six in total.

So to any of you who would like to participate but have no desire to submit anything... feel free to come talk about claiming a judging position before they run out. ^_^ They have run out. ;D

So far we have six judging spots taken. This means that there are none left, unless one of the six already claimed decides they don't actually want to judge. Remember; you may only be a judge if you are going to be wholly uninvolved with submissions. Please, only volunteer to be a judge if you feel that you are in no way going to participate in the fanworks portion of the contest, but still want to participate in some way.

EDIT: But yeah, judging positions are pretty much closed. Thank you to those who came and volunteered; we look forward to your input, which won't be needed until after the actual submissions and event. ^^

I will also keep the names of the judges anonymous until the end of the event, unless one of them tells me they'd rather remain anonymous.

WOA!! The Tanabata's banner is SO~ PRETTY!!!
I want to write some fic for Tanabata contest. But I'm really no good with description and narration. I'd rather like to write out conversation context while I imaged their expression in my head. But I'm really no good to describe them. I'm as hopeless in expressing any emotion as Ulqui. But I'll try. I also tent to write some serious review, but the reason it's not done well because I start facts bashing at first, then fangirlism in the middle -___- and to use word to extract my emotion out is so hard. Let's try to see if I could finish anything in this Tanabata.

And I want to talk more about Tanabata and Ulquihime relation. It's not much different to the post that I gave Karasu. It's just something I realize more after I sent that post (and read it over again).

There are 2 themes in Tanabata : Seperation and Reunion.

There's also quotes for that. I don't remember exactly those quotes so I just express in my own words here.
"Until the time you lost it, you realized how much precious it was to you."
"Until the time you found it, you realized that you will never want to let it go again."

Orihime and Ulquiorra have been seperated 2 times (officially): The first time is during the Caja Negacion, the 2nd time is during "The Ash".

If I could remind you that Ichigo and Rukia's seperation has also been done each others in the same manner.
They have been seperated countless times until the final reunion that they were accepted to be together: The first time is when Renji and Byakuya fetched Rukia in human world. And then they reunited. And then, they seperated the second time when Yoruichi interupted the battle between Ichigo and Byakuya. And then they reunited. And then they seperated one more time when Ichigo threw Rukia to Renji and Renji ran away with Rukia. Next, they reunited when Ichigo protected them from Aizen. And then, they seperated one more when Rukia decided to stay at SS while Ichigo return to human world. That's the end of the SS Arc. I don't have to tell you they continued that seperation and reunion act countless time in Arrancar and HM Arc. But that's for IchiRukia shipping. He he .

What I want to say is Rukia is the one who changed Ichigo's life. Rukia also the one who's in touch with Ichigo most than any other character. And every time of their seperation, Ichigo was injured to death, left to death or at least almost dead. If there's no one could save him there, he would be unlikely dead.

I can see any bashing say that because Ichigo and Rukia are main characters hence Kubo would favor them more than any others. NOT WITH ULQUIHIME. Because of various unknown reasons. Well, I feel the first term is true though. But that's doesn't mean the theme and pattern couldn't apply to Orihime and Ulquiorra.

Orihime is undoubtly the main character since the begining of the series. She's the hightlight of Arrancar and HM Arc, just like Rukia's role in SS Arc. She's confirmed by Kubo himself that she's important in the story.
Ulquiorra is another matter when it's come to whether he's important or not.

But I want to say one thing first that Ulquiorra is definitely the reason for Orihime's change (both inside and outside) (I hope you don't get the meaning wrong here -___-) If he didn't meet her or at least caught her into his eyes, she's still Orihime, the little princess we know during SS Arc. And even if she's just caught in his eyes, if he didn't kidnap her, there's no drama or shipping for us to do. Also, he's the one who's in touch with Orihime most during her imprisonment in HM. If there's someone who could see through her change in HM, it will be Ulquiorra first. Grimmjow might be the second though.

Let's check back the seperation between Ulquiorra and Orihime. I remember during the time that Grimmjow sent Ulquiorra to the Caja Negacion, Grim said that Ulqui would come back at least in 2 or 3 hours based on his reiatsu level. But if Kubo did not let Ulquiorra out of that Caja Negacion (I don't know that box funtion, but who know if that box got error and trap him forever or not), then he would be unlikely dead. Even if he's alive, he's somewhere in other dimension and couldn't come back to his world. Hence, he must come back at all cost for the sake of not geting any plot-hole.

In the second time of seperation, Ulquiorra is not as much as in dead stage full of wound and blood like Ichigo. Well, he's was blown up, but he regenerated and then turn to ash. Usually when a soul was purified by a shinigami's zankaputou, it will be disintegrated just like Zommari's case. Other Espadas like Nnoitra, Szayles and Grimmjow are most likely left to death. Well, until they lost all of their last blood, they will die right? But Ulquiorra's case is different. He did get slash once, but that didn't count if that slash didn't lead him to death. That's why when he threw back Zangetsu to Ichigo and told Ichigo used it to kill him. If Ichigo used it, and he died which mean he's purified. But Ichigo didn't. Ulquiorra just turn to ash by HIMSELF (might be unintentionally). And the act of turn to ash is NOT NORMAL to me. It's just like "I've never seen a Hollow died by turning to ash." And 'how can a soul turn to ash by the way?" In fact, I've never seen any manga character died by turning himself into ash. Well, it would be different for vampire's case. But for a pure-blood strong vampire, it's didn't die lame like that. Even if his body turned to ash, if there's at least one part of him was saved, then he's alive in his other form (ex: bat) and his body would return in days later. Just pray that the lower part of Ulquiorra is still intact. Or if not, his heart is already entrusted to Orihime. Renion would be not far in future.

Also, I don't think Kubo pull out his 2nd release just for one time show only. If Ulquiorra is NORMAL, Kubo just let him fucked up Ichigo in his 1st release fine. If I were normal Ulquiorra, I would say "the 2nd one is unnecessary". I know that discourage words don't not work with a strubborn Ichigo, more beat up don't work with him too. If I were normal Ulquiorra, the better choice for that is kill him for good. Too much watse time for this. The fact Kubo make Ulquiorra did something out of his character, shouting and frustrating, 2nd released just to show Ichigo his despair, ride from the dead to save the day only means that Kubo want to show something going on with Ulquiorra in his 2nd release. Kubo even made him fail on his strongest attack with such a leisure manner while for others is one strongest attack could kill you exactly. Ulquiorra stated that he hasn't mastered that technique. Is that a really lame excuse for the fail? No, I think he really means it. And if Kubo just kill of someone who hasn't skilled with his attack yet, just like "killing a bud before it can grow strong" defined the law of Bleach, to any character has strength to grow must to be grown to fullest until the day they get killed (by Kubo)

exactly, I have to admit I'm quite a negative person when it comes to Ulqui returning but for some reason this whole unfinished technique business is the thing that just about pushes me into thinking Ulqui will come back it just strikes me as such an unusual thing for Kubo to just randomly throw in there, normally, like you said, no character would get away with that in a shounen without perfecting him move in the end. That said I don't know how well this would apply to antagonists, but Ulqui could barely be classified as an antagonist anymore.

yes, similar to the failed move it's another weird/unique element thrown in there that Kubo could do a lot with, and I'm hoping this will be the case and it isn't just for that one scene. I really want to see what a hollow with a heart would look/act like (all the better if it's Ulqui ).

Now as for their reunion: I would like to think it would be as soon as we return to HM (Orihime grabs the ash, revives Ulqui, the usual deal) but I just feel like this may not be the case, it feels a little soon and issues such as what the hell happened to Ichigo may take precedent. I think Orihime needs a little time on her own to cool down as it were, let whatever feelings she has/had for Ulqui sink in properly, maybe do a little getting over Ichigo , then Ulquiorra will come at a time of need in a blaze of glory (like all the other Bleach characters tend to after long periods of absense) How he will return I don't know, but I say it could take another 150+ chapters (I will die waiting :/) to give Orihime time to really want him back and make the reunion all the more powerful - absence makes the heart grow fonder they say

Yo, I was so on with this idea!!! I wonder if we do get back that Ulqui is already healed!! I'm sure time has passed since Ulqui's ashing and through the fights in FKT!!! Maybe we are missing some UlquiHime lovin back in HM like we missed some fights between the Espadas and Arrancars!!

One of my theories is that when Ulquiorra said "this is my hand...is a heart" (or something along those lines ), he was speaking as Inoue was holding his hand, regenerating him but, ehm, I guess that idea is a lil too crack-trash
