i'm sure their relationship would advance, but it wouldn't advance as quickly. in this arc, some of the ichihime moments could only happen in that type of situation (like orihimes 'don't get hurt anymore')

Yes, you are right about this. I think that he giving her that sort of promise is an advancement in itself, as he couldnt be pictured doing that to her prior to the event in chapter 167..wait, correction. He wouldnt be doing that to anybody. I would have taken his actions as a retribution from his side; perhaps feeling that he would at least care for her now that he knew that she is a person he can call his friend. He just didnt realize the implications of his actions towards Orihime's feelings and her subsequent miscontrued pseudo-romance that is being endorsed by the other side.

Anyway, i think that her being captured acted as a feeling-inducer for Ichigo's side - because this is where we know how much he actually cares for her. This arc is not just an Orihime arc, but it is also Ichigo's development arc, albeit not so much into powers; but his abilities and coping with it, his feelings about the people that he loved and how they are the center of his universe.

There was one comment about an Rukia-bashing fic in FFnet which i think was deleted. It was in a series of bashing of the author because she chose the wrong person to portrayed badly in her fic - and there was one comment who had inspired me. She said that if the author wanted IchiHime canon, she should write more IchiHime and...
