Saiyuki
Gensomaden Saiyuki or more popularly known as just Saiyuki, is a popular manga series created by Kazuya Minekura. The story is loosely based on the famous Chinese novel Journey to the West.

Plot Summary: Many years ago, humans and youkais (demons) lived in harmony. Gyokumen Koushou, a youkai and also Gyumao's concubine, plans to resurrect Gyumao, an evil demon who was imprisoned 500 years ago, using a forbidden mixture of science and magic, which spawn the "Minus Wave", infecting all youkai in Shangri-La with madness, thus shattering the fragile peace that once existed between human and youkai. As the violence escalates, it's up to four misfits to save the world. Genjo Sanzo, a rogue priest, is teamed up with Son Goku, a 500-year-old demon, Sha Gojyo, a red-eyed half demon-half human, and Cho Hakkai, a school teacher turned demon is dispatched by the Sanbutsushin (The Three Aspects of Buddha) to embark on a perilous journey to the west to stop these demons from resurrecting Gyumao and restore the balance between humans and demons on Earth.

Reqiem is the movie not an OVA. They are releasing a 3-Part OVA series atm, with 3 month breaks, which features the Burial Arc of Reload. OVA I was released in April

I love that picture btw, it was used in the ending for saiyuki reload gunlock. Saiyuki really has beautiful artwork. I saw the manga volumes at borders the other day, and I'm thinking of purchasing them. but they cost $18 a volume. :cry

How did you like the Reload and Reload Gunlock anime series?

I think they were ok, but they messed up the OST. They should have kept the soundtrack from the Classic series, which was really outstanding.

About Classic: The Homura arc is the Best Filler arc i've ever seen in an anime.

Honestly, I think Reload and Gunlock lost that magical feeling I had for saiyuki, bonds and stuff like that. But i know gunlock anime deviate from the manga and i think the manga is much better apparently. I have to get those chapters soon. I didn't really like the kamisama arc in reload anime.

I love one or two tracks I've heard over gunlock but i can't find the OSTs. I always get image albums or something like that. I have both Classic OSTs :love.

Oh tell me about it, I didn't even realize the Homura arc was filler!! To be honest it was the Homura arc that made me love saiyuki more cause they mixed in Gaiden and introduced Nataku. :cry I think Gaiden is <333. I remember when Classic ended I was like VUT? Nuuuuuu.....where's the closure? Where's the ending? I didn't know that it was based on manga. =p

I hate Ni Jyenni (can't remember the spelling >_<) and Li Touten!!

Ye the beginning and the environment are actually from Saiyuki Gaiden, but with Homura entering the scene it's anime only, though the autor draw all of the characters like Homura, Zion and Shi-En. However Homura and co. were added in some Spreads in the Gaiden Volumes for no particular reason afterwards.

But why don't you like Dr. Ni -_- He's one of my fav. chars from Saiyuki. And who was Li Touten again, can't remember that name.

So Homura and co were canonized? :lmao I think maybe cause they were popular so the mangaka included them. Maybe the gaiden canon made the filler, well semi-filler in this case so good. :wtf

I don't like Dr.Ni cause he's creepy, and Li Touten is Nataku's bastard of a father. I want to hug Nataku. I feel all motherly for him :cry

I wouldn't say canonized ,rather it's a special for the fans, since the anime is more popular than the manga in this case. There was actually a special chapter release which featured Homura, though it hasn't been released on a volume yet.

Since it's written by a female author it's safe to believe that it's more built up for girls. But i believe we see the series with different eyes. The girls are impressed by the Sanzo "men" team, but i like the whole atmosphere, and the jokes about it, which somehow got lost after the Classic Series.

I agree. I think saiyuki has a lot of underlying themes which I love. The pain and bonds shared between the four characters are really interesting, and that was further emphasized with gaiden. I just slowly fell in love with it when I saw the Classic anime a few years ago.

Although, I do like Reload's funny behind the scenes :lmao And Gunlock although different from the manga, at least introduce some conflict with the relationship between the four characters.

Actually Saiyuki is not shonen ai the fan base has more guys then girls . As Gintoki said Saiyuki gets full points in terms of story the Reload bonanza in terms of style. Homura though a filler character was the best villains in the anime

Ah I've heard of Kibou no Zaika, I watched it on youtube I think. But I didn't like the fact that they used different VA for that one. I think it's because it was the first ova before the Classic anime series came to be if i'm not mistaken.

Like i said, on certain IRC channels you can find any chapter of any anime. Just take the time to get into it. It's really easy, if you know how it works.

As for saiyuki and saiyuki reload, I may end up purchasing them of Borders when i save enough money. Though they only have to volume five (reload) there. Maybe volume 6 is not completed yet or Viz has yet to translate them.

The Reload and Gaiden releases are very slow. Reload comes monthly, while gaiden comes only once every 3 months.

The OVA was released by fansubbers a year back . I am still waiting for second also the same group had also subbed another Kazuya's Ova which is also incomplete .

That Kibou ova was really long ago, they'd probably think nobody wants them anymore. Also, they had different VA and that could affect the demand for it. At least, I very much wish that the same VAs were used. XD

I've watched the 1st ova and dunno it was somehow different. The seyu sounded a bit different, i guess they changed them before the actual series started. But that's common for Pilot Ovas.

You are right Gintoki. Some of the VAs are different than the ones that are used now. That took out the enjoyment a little for me, cause i'm so used to the current ones and i associate them with saiyuki already.

I actually found Reload a lot better than Gublock . Also Gunlock main boss was repetitive and pretty lame compared to KamiSama . I loved the pacing of Reload than Gunlock . In terms of style its the best series amongst the three Also Gunlock has no Urasai

As i said the Ending from Reload was good, but the 17 or 18 eps before weren't. Maybe it is the most stylish Saiyuki, but i liked it more, when it wasn't as stylish. With Gunlock they went some steps back, but they couldn't meet the Classic Niveau since the Reload OST was really bad, and the OST of Classic was it, which gave the series the whole atmosphere. It's still one of my alltime favourite anime OSTs.

As for the New OVA series: It's the best animated Saiyuki we've ever seen, but you can't judge it from 1 OVA yet. I'm looking forward to see the Hakkai Special.

H-Hakkai special? :wtf They were anticipating that. Cause in classic, it was kinda goku's story in the second part, in reload it was gojyo, and in gunlock, sanzo. So fans were thinking this time it would be Hakkai's turn now.

Nono, the New OVA series features one character per OVA. There will be 3 parts. Part I aired some months ago. That was the Sanzo Special. The next two will be Gojyo and Hakkai. The second will air in 1-2 months i think, and the third in about half a year.

Ah wait, for a moment there I kept thinking Burial arc as the Even A Worm arc sumimasen. My mistake. I haven't watch the new ova yet, I'm not sure if i want to wait for all the parts to come out first. But then again, each character has a different story. Does the sanzo special include chibi goku? I forgot.

No it featured the past of the previous Sanzo and Dr. Nii under his old ego Ken'yuu as well as Sanzos Rampage in the village. There's no Goku/Gojyo or Hakkai in this 1st ep. Chibi-Goku belongs to the Goku Arc, which should be featured in the next OVA. You should watch it yourself since the release dates are very slow.

I think I will. I saw the opening for Burial, and the animation looks good. Also the song isn't bad. Sang by Garden. I like one of their songs that they sang for one of the saiyuki image albums. It's a pity they won't be doing a Goku Burial arc. I find Goku's story facinating, maybe because the meeting of sanzo and goku reminds me of gaiden.

Who said they won't do a goku burial arc. OVA 1 Featured the Intro Arc (Ken'yuu) and Sanzo. OVA 2 will be Hakkai and Gojyo from my guess. And OVA 3 will have the Goku Arc and Epilogue.

Yeah something about that. I haven't read the last few chapters so I'm not on the track currently. But as far as i know they've used already chapters till Volume 6 for the anime (though they changed the ending of the Hazel and Gato Arc a bit).

Okay to incite some discussion, who is your fav saiyuki character and why? And how did you first came across saiyuki?

My fav is Sanzo. In a world where fighting is usually done with magic and swords, he uses a gun. That's so cool.

A couple of years ago one of my friends told me about Saiyuki so I read the first few chapters but didn't like it (I love it now though). A year or two after that I watched the first episode of TV and was hooked. Now I have all the anime episodes and manga volumes:D

Hmm how did I come across Saiyuki. Ahh yeah I was in my local Anime IRC chan and asked my mates which of our series they would recommend me to watch, and they gave me Saiyuki. I've heard about it before but the name didn't wake my interest.Then I watched it in about 2 weeks, and afterwards I was more of a fan than them :D

As for me, my first encounter with Saiyuki was when they played the anime on tv a few years ago. Mind you, I was a bit skeptical at first when i heard it's a revamped version of the chinese novel Journey to the West. But i gave it a shot, and i'm glad that i did. I got really hooked to it when they started exploring each character's past and i personally find it very intriguing especially when the Homura arc started (boy was i shocked to find it semi-canon). Goku's past, Nataku's story and their link that started 500 years ago was a hook, line and sinker for me. ^_^ Also, i adored the VAs in the anime, i think they did a really good job.

I can't say exactly who are my fav characters. To me, I see the four main protagonists as a whole. I'm kinda torn between Hakkai, Sanzo or Goku. Yes, sorry Gojyo but the top spot is only shared by those three. =P I also really like Nataku and I hope he somehow gets a good ending. I hope =(.

The official Site was updated and the Sanzo images were replaced by Goku pics. So the official release date of Part II is 28.09. There's even a 3 minute promo video online. But you have to create an account on a japanese site. I've watched and I didn't find it that exciting, it's not worth. But hopefully the full release will be awesome.

It IS awkward, man. Durring the First season the VAs actually sounded like their characters, and then Reload comes out and suddenly they sound nothing like their characters.
Defiantly a WTF moment if I ever saw one.

and I completely agree, the first season which was dubbed by ADV was outstanding, the voices were fantastic

then geneon grabs hols of the next two season hire the wrong voices for each role, and ruin the series (and these seasons already had crappy art, so there was nothing to like about it)

Woah... I am SO behind with Saiyuki! I am currently reading the---- um---- RIGHT after Gensoumaden Saiyuki Manga volumes (I forgot the name of it...). My favorite character is Son Goku (he is CUTE). And the rest, I don't care for them.... Anyway, the last chapter I remember reading, it was when Sanzo was upset that Goku got shoot and stuff. But then later, he walks off with the big 'Indian' guy and the guy with the gun (yeah, I can't remember names-- bad habit of mine). Gojyo, Hakkai, and Goku go off on their own without Sanzo--- and find jobs or something if I am correct... And, unknown to them, Sanzo is not to far from where they are at.... So now, my question is, will they come face-to-face again and fight because of Sanzo 'betrayal' (and because they are protecting the youkai town?)? Or will they become 'buddies' again? Can't wait to find out! Oh yes, joinage please! :)

Just my opinion, but I'm more into the first series, Gensomaden Saiyuki than Saiyuki Reload, well, anime-wise. My memory might have deteriorated a bit, but Saiyuki Reload is the sequel to Saiyuki, am I right? If it is, then I'm not especially keen to it, since *sigh* it's very differently drawn in my eyes. ( Yes, I have this habit of comparing last season's art to the new one in almost every anime that has a sequel :cry )

Okay, so that's off topic, but where are you guys currently on on Saiyuki? I have to admit, I might be -WAY- behind Saiyuki right now.

I'm not sure, but it's probably because she ran out of enough allowance to spend on Saiyuki. Back then we buy around five to six manga-related magazines a month. That kinda burn a hole in our pockets, seeing that we don't come from a very wealthy family. Besides, my mum started nagging that our room alone is swimming in comics; so she said we shouldn't buy too much. And no, I don't mind you asking. XD

Moreover, she's way into Gantz right now. It's a crazy good manga! :yell ---> She would say.

I just now that the main character looked A LOT like Hakkai is all.... But, nothing else (maybe, except guns was involved in it a lot more).... As for predictions---- I got nothing :p Yeah, my mind is right now flooded with writing oneshots for a BLEACH 'couple' (more like cracked couple is like it) for this contest (actually- the contest is mentioned in my sig. a little). But, I'll try to read Saiyuki while I'm off for the rest of December from school. Should give me plently of time to fool around, chat, review some HWstuff, and catch up on some series! :)

Tokyo Pop Saiyuki Reload Vol. 8 won't be out till June. I stopped following the English version after they ruined the Saiyuki Reload Vol. 3 translations for me.

Saiyuki Reload JP Vol. 8 and Saiyuki Gaiden Vol. 3 was already released a while back. No wonder why I couldn't find this thread... It was buried!

The raws are hard to get based one source available on Livejournal and it's a place I stay away from. Though there is another source now, since everyone complained about that special journal; I can help provide the raws...

Hirata Hiroaki is in the seiyuu events; you might want those? I only watch for him and Kusao Takeshi; everyone else I pretty much ignore. Even though Seki Toshihiko and Ishida Akira have been part of Bleach Cast 8DDD

I wouldn't be surprise if he shows up in the future; more than half dozen of Saiyuki Cast are in Bleach and their roles as minor characters I find are even better than Saiyuki for some reasons these days 8DDD

the first dub season was fantastic, because it was done by ADV (and the anime itself was good)

the next two seasons were just terrible, Geneon can't cast dubs well at all:p and the animation in those seasons was horrid

No no, Geneon does ok with Dubs, just no Sayuki season 2.
Take Hellsing, for example. Perfect Dubs.
Now they have a Really great guy finding the Voice actors and Directing them, so that really helps.

But your right. ADV does awesome with Dubs like Season 1 of Sayuki.

They added a "hunny bunny" line that wasn't in the original manga at all because the bunny doll is a symbolism, nothing more. They basically Americanized it to the point where is no longer readable; the whole thing from Reload Volumes in Tokyo Pop were royally messed up compare to the first nine volumes.

at least with art edits you can usually tell where a change was made, or notice it easily in a scan

dialogue changes are harder to notice if you don't knwo the original language

For me... I guess I keep the link here too in case anyone was wondering what I was complaining about, or want the chapter. The chapter seem to be shorter than usual, rather disappointing, consider it's Ukoku-Nii Jienyi afterall, similar to Aizen Sousuke type of character. Or Minekura is dealing with her wrist injury. I think she is fully recovered by now from her health issues being hospitalize for a while. I don't know anymore... I have been moving away from Saiyuki Fandom because its been too slow for me 8(

Miinekura's Uterus was removed due some infections or disease that was giving her problems. I believe someone translated said that she doesn't mind not having a child. Minekuira is known for heavy smoking and being a workaholic. but the Zero-Sum Monthly, Bi-Weekly and Weekly manga are harder to obtain than Bleach. It comes out much slower and there is only one source providing the fandom with it. Which really pisses me off from the Elite Nazi-Fanbitches Mindset thing were it must be shared and follow certain rules that turns people away than stay.

My friend and I compare them; they are pretty much the same evil that everyone loves. Exception for a few things that make Aizen seems more epic for herding boys and girls from all over the world, and that Ukoku only seems to bring a large amount of fangirls to the fandom.

you don't need to follow that much rules with radiofreebanri >__>; just the one rule "don't post it outside the journal for 2 days" which is a rather simple rule me thinks? ^^; and if anyone here needs the entire saiyuki collection (saiyuki, reload and gaiden) or any part of those I'd be more than happy to upload too :> just remember that most is raw :T and if you want to read translations, go to saiyuki_manga on LJ, they provide translations next to their scans~

They change the dialogue for how the character speaks in speech and dialects being Americanize sort to speak; it doesn't necessary work in writing when telling a story. It does get annoying than keeping the actual context. 8(

lol i first got into saiyuki through the anime and OMG I had no idea it was made by Pierrot!! i wasn't that picky about quality last time so the anime never really bothered me tbh :XD at least the OST isn't that bad. I think Pierrot stretches their budget too thinly since they tend to deal with a lot of long running anime when you think about it. It's funny cause it was the Homura filler arc that really got me hooked into the series. (i am a total sucker for past lives, bonds etc etc). And now i know why it was pretty good filler cause it had semi canon gaiden story in it. hehe...

well the ending for Saiyuki is that they defeat Gyuu-Maou, possibly die while doing so and that world peace is restored :lmao for me the most interesting thing is the developments they go through as characters throughout their journey :> like Sanzo is doing right now, he's realising how important his companions really are. and before that we saw Goku trying to figure out whether youkai or humans were better and on which side he should be and he found his answer too ^^

I am extremely picky about quality when it comes to anime :lmao so no way anyone can get me to watch it xD really, if a manga is adapted into an anime why can't it all be like FMA or Soul Eater? D: the animation is gorgeous there, the art is pretty and little or very good (like FMA) filler. I know it's impossible cos those are made by high budget, high standard studios and they can't pick up everything, but stilllllll xD

yeh, and still I feel I like Gaiden best of all xD Saiyuki was good but ended up being a 9 volume intro or something :lmao in Reload the journey starts for real but I feel that Gaiden shows the true nature of the characters and how all of this happened <3 the atmosphere in that story is also very different.... But you know the reason he fled is cause he couldn't bear to lose another important person in his life. Seeing goku near death really shook him and hakkai's bitchslap was pretty satisfactory.

I don't think saiyuki is popular enough to warrant that kind of budget. Haha well at least the 2nd OP had lots of fanservice. they had the main guys not wearing shirts and they were all tied up to each other....hawt :wha

as for Saiyukis ending, I won't be suprised if it ends with them reaching gyumaoh, as their journey is over, lol

actually Rain do you have LJ? else I highly reccomend the saiyuki_manga LJ community, because they are also doing saiyuki, but with translations next to the pictures.... their releases take longer than radiofreebanri, but they have trans :> and it's online reading too~ you just need to become a member with an LJ account and then you can read everything online, they are on ch44 now so they do have some new stuff :> they also do Saiyuki Gaiden and are currently scanning the latest artbook <3 do check them out if you've got LJ =D

Gaiden/Monkey King was before the actual Journey when they were once Gods. Son Goku was born from a rock from Fruit and Flower Mountain and was taken to heaven. Caused a lot of chaos and was prisoned on Earth with rock above for 500 years. The actual legend anyway, but done in different variations from many I have seen.

Saiyuki was when the journey started where they reincarnate on Earth. Saiyuki Reload was mix of prequal and backstory for each character. Saiyuki Burial was animation of Saiyuki Reload backstory Vol. 3 - 4. I doubt they probably reanimate the entire story again to Reload Gunlock though; consider how far the recent chapters have gone now.
