Sayonara Zetsubō Sensei revolves around a very pessimistic high school teacher named Nozomu Itoshiki who tries to hang himself in a cherry blossom tree one day, but is saved by a very optomistic girl known as Kafuka Fūra, though her real name is unknown.
She proceeds to go as far as to give Nozomu a nickname, "Pink Supervisor", and even offered to pay him fifty yen to do so, which he outright refused. After having enough of the strange girl, Nozomu bolts to the school, and starts his homeroom class, but finds that the girl is one of his students.

First Epsiode Synopsis
Kafuka Fūra is cheerily walking to school one April morning when she suddenly spots a man trying to hang himself in a fit of despair. Kafuka manages to use her weight to snap the rope, thus saving his life. Kafuka has an eternally positive outlook on life, while the man, named Nozomu Itoshiki, has an eternally negative outlook on life. As the two converse, Kafuka gives Nozomu the nickname Pink Supervisor, and proceeds to pay him fifty yen to call him by this name. Nozomu eventually cannot take anymore of the girl's ridiculous ramblings, and runs off to school to start homeroom at the start of a new school year. When Nozomu walks in the door, he finds Kafuka is one of his students
