This is part of the flashback situation. The reason she died was so to kill any chance of shipping Ichigo with Rukia. I felt Ichigo needed to be opened up emotionally since he's generally a locked down door. A death like this would force him to open up, take out Rukia and create a nice emotional air. I wanted to kill her off in the fight with the arrancar, but Ichigo'd be way more pissed in the fight and I thought this idea up later.
