The Mars Volta are the best band around at the moment. Their music is bombastic, passionate, ecstatic and unrestrained. Playing live, they're on another level entirely. Its more of spiritual gathering than a concert, or so I've heard. I haven't been lucky enough to have them play nearby. To be honest, they shouldn't really exist; their studio work is entirely unrestricted. Its pretty much unheard of for a band to take such liberties on a major label, but OH WELL.

I doubt there are very many fans around here, but who knows. If any of you check 'em out, all good. The band consists of singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López, as well as whoever they deem fit to record with them - listen to some of their stuff, and you'll see how wonderfully complex it all is. Two people? Not enough.

Favourite album has to be Frances the Mute. Everything else seems very overproduced in comparison, and I love the whole 'this album is one song' concept. Cygnus up there is part of it. After that, probably Bedlam in Goliath. I can't get enough of the lyrics, especially in Goliath, Tourniquet Man, Wax Simulacra and Metatron.

Blabber blabber blabber. Best prog-rock band since Rush, guaranteed.

GO.

It's a matter of opinion, Dopesmoker. You have to agree, they really are something different.

Glad to hear some people like them. I thought they were rather well known, but apparently not.

it would've been a matter of opinion if you started the thread with "in my opinion they are best band etc etc"

and yes since they are an experimental band, they are different.
you're right though, they are very well known (even had commercials for their newest album) just not on this forum i guess.

While I see where you're coming from, I would've said that pretty much everything about music is opinion. Music is an art form - everything's an opinion in that case.

I haven't seen any adverts, and the only people I know who know of them are the ones I've introduced them too. With mixed results. Strange, the only place I've heard them mentioned is online.

Edit: Holy hell, you've been banned.

good point, didn't think of that.

really? i live in the US and mtv was playing commercials for it a lot.

and my local music scene is very screamo/punk/experimental oriented so there's a lot of at the drive-in fans, which of course means people will get into the mars volta.

Ah, well, I guess I never watch any of the music channels... That may be why I haven't seen any adverts for them. Doy.

I've never actually heard At The Drive In yet. Plan to, but I never get around to it.
Over here it's very pop-oriented. Not fun. Not fun at all.

Heh, I quite like this. Would you say the album - Relationship of Command, right? - is a good place to start off when listening to them?

That's my favorite track definitely from Frances the Mute.

About Guitar Hero: there's also going to be a downloadable pack on either Guitar Hero or Rock Band, can't remember. I think it's just going to be Goliath tracks, but I'm not sure. Mainly because I only know this through a friend and couldn't give a toss about Guitar Hero, but w/e. Hopefully their inclusion will give them a bit of a commercial boost.

And you know what sucks? The song, Frances the Mute, wasn't included on the album. What in the hell, Universal Records. What in the hell. I'm going to need to download it, it's fantastic. Though my favourite song is still Ilyena, at least for the moment. It's absolutely brilliant once the guitar kicks in. That said, my favourite song tends to shift based on what I'm listening to. Deary me...

By the way, the new Omar Rodriguez-Lopez album, Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fungus, is out on the 22nd. Make sure you look into it. His other work that I've heard, The Apocalypse Inside of an Orange, sets the bar pretty high, but you bet he can deliver.

I find them quite boring or is that just me?

Esper

It seems to be. >:

I can appreciate that they may not be to everyone's taste, but why boring? If anything I would've said they're pretty far away on the other side of the spectrum, but that's just me.

Not my favourite band of all time, but they do have some good stuff.
The sinde project that they have going on with that guy from Rage Against the Machine is also interesting.

Do you mean One Day as a Lion, with John Theodore and Zach de la Rocha?

Really been meaning to look at that, but I keep forgetting.
