May was another strong month for gaming north of the border, as the industry tracking NPD Group today released its Canadian retail sales figures, showing growth across the board.
The research firm's figures show Canadian gaming retail sales for May topped C$72 million ($67.5 million), an 83 percent jump over May 2006's tally of just over C$39.3 million ($36.8 million). Hardware sales experienced the most growth, up 149 percent to C$32.5 million ($30.5 million), easily besting the previous May's C$13 million ($12.2 million). Game sales were up a slimmer 42 percent to C$30.9 million ($29 million), while accessories soared 87 percent to C$8.7 million ($8.2 million).
Nintendo again earned bragging rights for the month, with the Wii and DS first and second in hardware sales, respectively. The Wii moved more than 37,300 systems for the month, with the DS close behind at 35,900. The PlayStation 2 was the next best-selling piece of hardware with a little more than half the sales of the DS, nearly reaching 18,200 units moved. The rest of the pack was rounded out by the PlayStation Portable (15,000), Xbox 360 (12,300), PlayStation 3 (6,500), and Game Boy Advance (6,100).
Canadian consumers also shelled out for Wii accessories, with 24,600 Wii Nunchuks sold at retail, and 22,900 Wii Remotes, according to the NPD Group. The third best-selling accessory of the month, a Wii Points card, lagged couldn't keep up with the controllers, notching 6,800 purchased in May.
Nintendo also claimed the top four spots in the software charts for the month, with Pokemon Diamond and Pearl for the DS backed up by Wii games Mario Party 8 and Wii Play, in that order. Activision's Spider-Man 3 for the PS2 snapped Nintendo's streak by snagging fifth place on the charts. The rest of the NPD Group's Canadian top 10 follows below.
NPD Group Canadian console software sales for May 2007 (game--system--publisher--copies sold, rounded to hundreds):
Pokemon Diamond--DS--Nintendo--24,900
Pokemon Pearl--DS--Nintendo--19,500

Following an April in which software sales were slightly down, in May the video game industry in the U.S. bounced back nicely. Console software was up 31 percent to more than $274 million, and total video game industry sales soared 49 percent to $815.5 million. Year-to-date, video game sales have reached $5 billion, a 47 percent increase over last year's $3.4 billion. A record breaking year would almost seem guaranteed for 2007.
Console hardware was a real driver of growth in May as sales climbed 79 percent to $221.4 million. Overall in hardware, the Nintendo DS (at this point, not surprisingly) took top honors... again. Nintendo sold through 423K units during the month. This was followed by Wii, PSP, PS2, Xbox 360, and then PS3. Unfortunately, NPD could not provide a complete hardware sales breakdown as of press time, but directionally it is interesting to see the PSP outselling the PS2, 360 and PS3.
On the software side, Nintendo's Pokemon Diamond for the DS once again led all titles. The game sold an additional 331.2K units, bringing total sales of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl in the U.S. to well over 2 million thus far. Diamond and Pearl have already sold over 5 million copies in Japan, and the entire Pokemon franchise has sold over 155 million.

US Top Selling PC Games
The NPD Group has released the latest list of the top 10 best selling PC games in the US, this time for the week ending Nov. 4:
# 1. The Sims 2 Pets - Electronic Arts
# 2. Neverwinter Nights 2 - Atari
# 3. Battlefield 2142 - Electronic Arts
# 4. World Of Warcraft - Blizzard

also.. The Nintendo DS hit the 18 million mark in Japan this week, and that's in less than three years.
Next week the Nintendo Wii will also hit the 3 million mark in Japan, meaning it has a 2 million lead over the PS3 in Japan.

I think only a 2 million lead for the Wii over PS3 isn't that bad considering the price difference. Both are nothing compared to the DS sales but that is to be expected. Glad that Battlefield 2142 is up there. I play that game too much. It's so much fun. XD

Not much from US numbers or Japan yet, I expect them to arrive this weekend.
Meanwhile we have the Canadian figures for June.. I guess some people could find that interesting. =p
Canadian Hardware Figures For June
Wii: 53,000
DS: 45,700
PS2: 21,000
PSP: 18,500
360: 13,500
GBA: 8,800
PS3: 6,500
It's a bit sad to see the PS3 being outsold by GBA..

wow, that's sad....PS3 is not doing as well as I hope. Maybe there's not many nice ps3 games in the market right now? Or is it still too expensive even with the price cut. Anyways, I'm confident sales will peak when more games come out.

Big price and none of the big titles (MGS4, WKS, FFXIII) are out yet.
I'm personally more of a Nintendo fan, so I'm very pleased with the sales of the DS and the Wii.

"Here's the breakdown, versus the last few months, with the underlined numbers being the most recent, June 2007:"
UPDATE: NPD Group has issued a statement there was an error in the original numbers -- PSP actually sold 290,100, not 230,000, as was originally listed.
# March 2007 vs. April 2007 vs. May 2007 vs. June 2007 PlayStation 3: 130,000 vs. 82,000 vs. 81,600 vs. 98,500

# PSP: 180,000 vs.183,000 vs. 221,000 vs. 230,000
Software sales remained as expected, Nintendo obviously dominating many of the top spots thanks to continually strong hardware sales for both Wii and Nintendo DS. 2K Games' The Darkness barely managed to crack the top 10, coming in at the bottom spot, beat out by Capcom's Wii-modified version of Resident Evil 4. Elsewhere, Forza Motorsport 2 continues to sell well, as does the Guitar Hero series.

Geez, people soak up Mario Party like a dry sponge. I'll give it that it's fun, but you would figure that it would not always be at the top.
