Shinn sit on the roof that night. The cold wind reminded him of the past he had. And about the one he missed a lot.
--First day in Soul Society--
It was a bright day. The sun shone and the bird chirped. A 10 year-old plus was found by a patrolling shinigami, and soon be sent to Soul Society with konsoh.
It was Shinn. And it became his first day in Soul Society.
The officer sent him to the most chaotic place in Rukongai. It was where the most crime happened in Soul Society.
He was alone. He knew nobody there. He wandered around, not knowing what to do. Yet nobody seemed to care about it. No family intended to take him in.
Time passed by and he had lived alone since then. He lost his trust toward people and he didn't want to talk to anyone. He didn't like it to be alone, but there was no other option to choose. He was sad, but he pretended not to. He learned everything he needed to survive. Showing weakness might make you a prey, he knew that from experience, since he had been victim many times. So he pretended to be strong, hiding all his emotion. Slowly, all his expression faded. He no longer smiled nor cried.
--5 years later--
It was a cold night at fall. Shinn was going to a hill near where he lived. The wind usually blew nicely there. He liked to go there at night since he liked the cold wind. He had been doing so for years. The wind always felt refreshing to him, for a reason he didn't understand at all.
He arrived at his favorite spot and sat down. He paused as the wind blew and the full moon shone.
A few minutes later, a girl's voice was heard. "Um.. Hello." Shinn turned his head. It was a girl that looked his age. She wore a green yukata with pictures of red leaves. She had green eyes and ponytail. Her hair was black and straight. Uninterested, Shinn turned his head forward again.
"Can I sit there too?" Again, no answer was heard. "I take that as a yes", she smiled. Another silence. Shinn didn't mind sharing the place. If he had minded, he would have said no. He didn't really care what that girl would do.
She sat beside him. "My name's Kaede ichimonji. What's yours?" She offered a handshake. "Shinn Fujiwara", his first words finally came out. He didn't accept the handshake. The wind blew. Shinn stretched his arms without changing his expression. They both sat there for hours without saying anything. She seemed to want to talk but had no idea what to talk about.
However, she came again the next day, and the day after. She came everyday, sitting there and tried to talk, but always failed.
One day, she came as usual, and talked to him, "The wind here feels good doesn't it? And the moon is pretty." At last, he answered, "Yea, it does. Why do you like to come?" "To relieve some stress", she said. "I was quite new in rukongai and I know no one. Life is harsh for weak people. And also.." Shinn listened to her. He got interested with the story. It was harsh here, as she said. And he had nobody to talk about that.
".. you seems to be lonely", she continued, smiling. Shinn stared at her. His look softened and he slightly smiled.
"Thanks", he said. "Let's survive", he said again.
They got along better and soon became friend.
--10 years after the meeting--
That night, they met again. Kaede brought up an unusual topic. "Hey, Shinn, let's become a shinigami." "Why?" he asked. She paused for a while. "You know, here strong people prey on the weak. The weak can do nothing to change that. But if we're strong.. " Again, she paused. "To protect people, and also, to protect ourselves. I'm a bit tired with this routine. We have to struggle everyday. Running from the bad guys, fighting them. And also.. I want to see people's smile. I want to protect people who need me." Shinn agreed with her.Nobody smiled at him except Kaede here. He understood that she didn't want to be lonely. But to think that it gave her such a resolution made Shinn felt proud of her. "But doesn't power bring disaster also? Don't you think we might hurt people also?" he asked. "Sometimes people hurt other because they just want to do it or because they're weak. Weak people can't survive without harming others. Tigers aren't strong enough to live without killing. In that case, we only have to grow stronger and stronger. And I doubt we are the type to harm people out of whim", she smiled. Shinn smiled back. He didn't think she had such a deep thought. A bit childish, but it was partly true. "Alright! Let's do it!"
But she didn't make it. She had had a severe disease all this time and she had never told Shinn. Her death shocked him a lot. In her grave, he promised to be a strong shinigami. He promised that he would grow stronger and stronger. And that he would protect her and everyone here. Again, he locked his heart. No more expression was showing. And the pain remained, that he didn't want to get close to anyone else.
He went to shinigami academy and joined the 11th division to seek more and more strength. Strength to protect. After years of joining, he became the 4th seated shinigami.
--back to present--
The memory still remained. It wasn't visible in his face but the pain was still there. As it became too late, he jumped off the roof and got in to sleep.
