View Full Version : What is Bleach about?

All good stories have a theme, sometimes even a moral or a lesson that's learned by the end. A point that the author is trying to get out; those that do it successfully aren't preachy... which I believe KT is. Not preachy I mean.

So what is the point/theme/moral/lesson of Bleach? What is the overall message that Kubo is trying to put out there?

And no, I'm not asking for something deep and philosophical and will cause breakthroughs in people. As I said, good stories have something underlying in it's story, even those that only appear to be nothing more then 'entertainment'.

I'm just curious... as there are many things that re-occur in Bleach (the value of friends/family, overcoming your fears, etc) but of those things, is there anything more prominent then the others?

Good ideas guys! I guess I would say a theme for bleach would be 'the universe is not always black and white'. I think that goes with a lot of situations in the series.

Fight against destiny. Resist Destiny.

You control destiny/world yourself, destiny doesn't control you.

In almost all the series/ stories >> 'The universe is not always black and white'

I think the theme is believing in yourself and working hard to be what you want to be, even if you're destined towards something.

I like the idea of the "thin line between black and white" the change between what is good and what is evil, what is right what is wrong etc.

I hesitate to draw a conclusion from an unfinished series, but the theme I get so far from Bleach is "family & friends > everything" and "fight the norm".

It's about a hero, who turns to the dark side of the Might. He was the chosen hero, but became something what he always fought against. His name is Ana... eehh Ichigo Kurosaki

It's about friendship, and not taking everything for granted. You have to work to make yourself happy, no one else can do that for you.

maybe finding the strength inside of yourself, and protecting what is important to you. Also, Destiny works in mysterious ways.

I think the lesson we can learn from Bleach is : "boobs are NEVER too big!!"

but seriously I'd say it would be mostly be something like the opposition between your 'human' side that thinks and all that and your 'beast' side that is more about instinct. So if you need to plug-in a moral to this, it would be "accept youself as you are" or "we're all animals in the end" or something??

Bleach is the story of Ichigo not getting laid. >_>

OK, I'll be serious now: Bleach is about, as Kaien famously said, the hearts that are made when people meet.

That's as poetic as I'll ever get.

It's a story about finding your inner strength, protecting those close to you, growing and maturing, self-discovery, and creating new bonds.

One thing that I forgot to mention is that Bleach teaches you not to let a man pat you on the head.

It means he wants to kill you.

... That's so true... :Mind Crumbles:

But I'm enjoying the responses! A lot about destiny, strength and protecting what you care for most... pretty nice way to sum up Bleach right?

:lmao I had to think about that for a second. But yeah..
:lmao ...it's soooo true!

As for "what is Bleach about?". KT's hit us a few time with (to paraphrase):

(Wanting) to survive is not enough.
(Wanting) to fight is not enough.
No.. (wanting) to WIN is the only thing that matters!

I've always thought Bleach centered around bonds. Even thought that seems to fit in with Naruto better... **is shot** XD The bonds of family (all of our 5 main characters have different and unique family stories/bonds) and most obvious the bonds of friendship, for the many upon many reasons I'm sure everyone can figure out. There are other bonds, of course, but I think those 2 are by far are the most important in the plot, and have been stressed in subtle ways continuously throughout Bleach.

I got neg-repped in this thread. In response to the neg-repper's statement, I agree with what he/she said....

Bleach is all about Inoue Orihime growing up. She needs to grow, from indulging in the cloud of fantasy to the earth harsh reality. In order to grow, she must forget Kurosaki Ichigo, because she has realized the fact that he would never care for her well-being, him being passionless, focusless, emotionless and romanticless in rescuing her than the previous rescue arc. That's why she would undergo the dark process of being manipulated and played inside(Aizen), and it would open her eyes, make her see the harsh realities of Kurosaki, starting with his ZOMBIE MASK(it's very, very scary).

Finally, Kubo is going to end her up with other guys on bed....while Ichigo end up as a virgin.

You get this a lot from reading the manga sections.

Ahaha manfan, can't say I've looked to much in the manga threads... though 'growing up' seems prevelent in Bleach as well, just depends on what kind of 'growth' we're talking about. ;)

Bleach is obviously about overcoming your fears and weaknesses and following what you believe in, not what someone tells you to do (may it be destiny or whatnot). That's how a lot of problems or issues are solved in Bleach.

Friendship and protecting your loved ones.

Good always triumphs over evil  clichè.

Fighting is justified if it is a good cause.

Gain strength and power for a good cause.

The anime director for Bleach said (In the US Shonen Jump)that he felt the overall theme was friendship, I'm going to agree with him.

Woah Rain...are there more Bleach interviews you know of? If so please post them in some thread..XD

Rain

@Riekie- The US Shonen Jump has had an interview with Noriyuki Abe and Tite Kubo. The Noriyuki Abe interview was mostly about the movie Memories of nobody. Kubo's interview was just about bleach. If i can find them i'll post what i can.

hrm...well bleach has several themes however the most predominant one would be believing in oneself as well as one's comrades.

Agmaster

The theme of Bleach is that nothing is what it seems. Hanatarou is evil I tell you.

LoL xD

Anyway unlike Naruto Bleach doesn't have a theme that screams at you "Look at me! I'm the undercore theme of this manga! Look at me!!" I'd say it's about many things, the main of them being protecting your loved ones at any cost. And I guess growth, not only as in "growing up", but as in becoming a more complete person.

Velius

Going with the director eh? That sounds like a safe bet. XD

That's not bad though, friendship. Just kinda cliche. hehe. It would be cool if you could post that Rain. Though if it's the one that's been on BE for a long time, don't bother. ;D You said it had Noriyuki Abe in it, so I don't think it is the same.

Rain

As far as i can tell they are US shonen jump exclusives, but neither has very much to it, unlike some of the japanese interviews.

I'm still looking for them and will post them when I can.

I think the theme would be to fight and care for your beloved people.
