when you see a anime with computer graphic (they love to put cell shading) does it make it better or worse? i watched a new anime and people said that CG in anime is gross, what is your stand.

examples:

It depends really, in how and where they include the CG. Take Dragonaut for example, that was one of the wort use of CG Ive seen in anime.

It can work though, if they know how to. However, I havent seen that many anime that incorporate CG. I see it more in movies, where it usually does look good.

Like Karas (aka one of the best anime movies ever. if you havent seen it, do it. now! :)

Cg characters never look quite as good as hand-drawn ones, maybe its the shading or the detail, but something is just off

I like when anime use CG backgriounds and hand-draw the characters, because then everything usually looks great

Hmm, with the few examples that I've seen so far, I find that CG in anime usually looks ... out of place? For me it tends to looks jarring, having such different textures mixed together. Though of course some anime do it well (like Macross Frontier). Then again their CG was of a higher quality.

So for now I prefer either all CG or all drawn. Maybe in the future when studios have access to more powerful computers/CG programs, they can mix the two mediums more flawlessly.

I try to think of series like gantz or Full Metal panic

the characters are hand-drawn and the don't lack any attention to detail, but the backgrounds are so detailed (more so than can be done with hand drawing)

I think the genre has a big impact of what medium should be used, regular comedies or romance anime don't need it as much as an action/shonen would

there is a diffrance with animation enhanced by CG and cg animation. cool rotations and stuff like that is just effects but when you have a character which is completly CG it might look really bad(those fit better in real action) that is why they use cell shading most of the time but its still isnt really fitting all the time, as i see it making organic characters with CG is a nono

somthing in the magic is gone.

I think it depends on the anime itself and the studio making it. Take Gonzo for example. They do well with CG effects in most of their anime, blending it seamlessly whenever it's needed, and the results are usually pretty good (see Last Exile).

Too much CG, though, can destroy an anime. Or the bad use of it.

Anime definitely don't mix with CG. Two textures mixed don't looks well. >.>

As long as it's not CG, I'm fine. I like the characters hand-drawn better cause they're... more original? I hate when it's full-blown CG, it's not right to me. But when it's only a few things in there, I'm fine, as long as it fits in though. It all depends on how its done.

futurama isn't anime but it's a good example of CG incorporated into traditional animation. just enought to not even notice it. great stuff!

When used well, I think CG is pretty awesome in anime. I saw the last couple Ghost in the Shell movies in theaters, and the use of CG combined with animation was just stunning.

I can't say I've seen an example of CG in anime that's just plain bad, but then again, I really haven't seen very much CG in anime at all.

Full CG anime is lousy, though. I prefer when it's used to augment the regular animation.

CG in anime is good if it helps emphasize the detailed actions in the anime (that's what they're used for in most of the animes I watched so far). It makes the particular scene smoother, which is maybe not possible with the help of CG.

It's fine by me if there is CG in anime...but it should mix well with the scenes and should be able to make that scene better....

It depends how it's used really. I personally haven't seen any CG in anime apart from Dragonaut which was just a crime against humanity. The anime that is, also their use of CG. It just stuck out and looked awful, not seamless like it should be.

Karas was an amazing use of CG. Half of it was pretty much since the animation quality was just beautiful. The regular scenes were really nice and when they went into CG you didn't think anything of it since they made it look good. Unlike Dragonaut.

speed- have you seen Gantz of Full Metal Panic

both of those series use quite a bit of CG, and it looks quite good

the backgrounds are generally done in CG, so more time and attention can be spent of the characters.

Because of this, i never saw really any scenes where the characters looked off, they always looked so clear cut, and everything moved so smoothly

but i suppose, if any anime when whatever style they use is done right there wont be many complaints xD

i think its quite normal to use CG in background and effects, this isnt really what i am talking about here, i am talking about moving things...usually they use it for mechanic things and sometimes it just look so horriable...

Oh, like in the Appleseed series, although that was all CG

what did you think of the art in those (if you have seen them)?

didnt liked it...way too much cg and frankly some of the mecha had annoying design.

on the other hand i think they did wonderful job in macross f

Yeah, appleseed wasn't good, i thought it looked rather bad myself and i just didn't seem right xD

I haven't seen macross f yet

There is also this one older anime (i assume its an anime) called reboot, that looked horrid as well

raw CG anime isn't very good IMO, but im not a fan of pure CG anything;)

I agree with Gol about Ghost in the Shell. I think it works really well they way they did it.

With some of the series, the CG is very fluidly mixed in. Like the the Full Metal Panic example. With others, like Sky Girls, they seem to stand out. A lot. I do believe it's done on purpose for the effect of the CG.

CG works better with mecha anime.. but as long as it's applied carefully and on BG's only I'm ok with it.

Well, they failed with it in Shippuuden. Stupid snakes...

Edit: Karas though... <3

I've voted for "as long as the emphasis is on regular animation and style i am fine ";
if the CG utilization isn't blatant and stays subtle it can work really well with the usual animation style.
HOwever, it looks often really off when the CG's prevailing over everthing else which makes it quite diespleasing for the eye :O
