Chapter titles

Kubo gives BLEACH the weirdest, yet coolest titles to the chapters. But most of the times they are confusing and hard to explain. I've spent large amounts of times trying to figure out what a chapter title means. Sadly, I've been unlucky figuring out the meanings they have (except for one).

I'd like this topic to be sort of an explanation topic. Ask about any chapter you dont understand and maybe members here can try and explain what they mean, 'cause I know we have some very smart members.

There was one chapter title that puzzled me the most. That was chapter 272, "Don't Kill my Volupture"

There was something about that title that made my mind uneasy. What the heck does it mean? And this is the conclusion I came to:

I believe it refers to Grimmjow, talking about 'Hime. If you remember, this is the chapter where those Arrancar brats beat her up and Grimm appears at the end of the chapter. He doesnt want her dead. But what does "volupture" mean? It's actually not a word, but a combination of two: "voluptuous" and "rapture."

Voluptuous is pretty straight forward. It refers to 'Hime's body. Her breasts to be precise; they're voluptuous.

Then there's rapture. I confused this word with "rupture" which is the state of being broken, bursting, etc. Because of that, the title didnt make sense to me. But it's not rupture, it's rapture. Rapture is the name given to the event when Jesus Christ will descend from the Heavens. NOW it's making more sense right? From what I read, in this event, Jesus descends with the spirits of Christians who have died and return to their bodies. The Christians who are still alive then join them to meet God. Then they would all obtain immortal bodies.

So rapture, in this BLEACH chapter, refers to the fact that 'Hime is the one who will rise Ichigo "from the dead" and give him more power.

I dont know about you guys, but Ichigo seemed more powerful in that last chapter than ever before. Even his Hollow transformation lasts longer. I believe that once 'Hime made contact with the hole Ulquiorra made on Ichigo's chest, something might have happened. But I digress.

So, in a nutshell, "Dont Kill my Volupture" is like Grimmjow saying to the Arrancar girls, "Dont kill the voluptuous woman who will bring Ichigo from the dead." Or something like that, Im not good with paraprashing (sp?).


So yeah, just like I did above, if someone has a question about a title, this would be the topic to ask. And this would be the topic for any members who have their own explanations about chapter titles.

I think rapture the Etymology is used

Etymology

"Rapture", when used in eschatological terms, is an English word used in place of the Latin word raeptius, which is taken from the Vulgate, which in turn is a translation of the Greek word harpazo, found in the early Greek New Testament manuscripts of 1 Thessalonians 4:17.

In many modern English translations of the Bible, harpazo is translated; "caught up", or "taken away".

"Harpazo" \har-pad'-zo\ Greek; "forcibly snatched away", "taken for oneself".



To me Voluptuous Capture makes more sense as it connected with Ulqi . Inoue is Ulqi's capture and GJ takes her away

What about adding all the chapter names to the first post? Then givn time we might have givn a look at the entire serie, with the results add in the op post.

THis way people can read and agree or disagree and the discussion can open again for that chapter.


Bleach really have many interesting Chapter names and word games.

I remember "Paradise is nowhere" at the titel page it says "Paradise is now here"
Just moveing one letter 1 space and you have a completly diffrent meaning.

As for 'Don't kill my volupture', I always thought it referred to Inoue who was thinking about Ichigo and how she didn't want him to be killed o___O there's a perfume named volupture, and since she smells him... oO

I thought that too. It's pretty far-fetched (in my opinion) that it'd refer to Grimmjow and Orihime, since GJ only appears in the end of the chapter and isn't primarily featured in it. And I don't think Lolly and Menoly intended to kill her, but beat her up. I don't think they would've had the guts to kill her, since they at least should be aware of the fact that Aizen wouldn't be forgiving about it.
So, in a nutshell, "Don't Kill my Volupture" is like Grimmjow saying to the Arrancar girls, "Dont kill the voluptuous woman who will bring Ichigo from the dead." What I think of the chapter title is under Syn's quote. But what you said about Orihime giving Ichigo more power and 'bringing him from the dead', it's possible. As for whether or not Grimmjow wants her dead, I think he doesn't really care that much. Even if he knew that Ichigo would protect her from the King Cero, he still fired it at her and has been somewhat violent towards her (like, trying to strangle her a few chapters back and lifting her up from her collar). And I hate being pernickety, but the chapter title had that my in front of the volupture. And Grimmjow does not consider Orihime his, so...yeah. So, it should've been 'Don't kill the Volupture'. But the my-word implies that it refers to Orihime and Ichigo, in the way that Syn brought up.

But yeah, the chapter titles are interesting, to say the least.

I believe bore could mean a hollow, but then again, a hollow as in a hollow space, etc.

There have been some really great titles, like "Shake Hands With Grenades" and "In Sane We Trust". A few of the ones I had to explain a while back:

- c28, Symptom of Synesthesia: Synesthesia is when a sensation, like a certain sound or color, produces a completely unrelated sensation alongside it. For example, seeing the color green could cause you to hear a ringing sound or something like that. The chapter was when the Karakura crew was at Kanonji's show, and the roaring of the demi-Hollow was causing some of the members to feel queasy.

- c46, Karneades~Back to Back: Karneades (or Carneades) was a Greek skeptic who taught that certainty is a question of perspective.

- c91, KING OF FREISCHÃœTZ: Der Freischutz is an opera by German composer Carl Maria von Weber, in which the main character sells his soul to the devil in exchange for seven bullets that cannot miss their target. This is when Ishida blows apart Jiroubou's soul cutter.

- c143, Parthian Shaft (this title was changed to Blazing Souls in the volume release): A "parthian shaft" is a shot fired while pretending to retreat. Renji stands up from being diced by Senbonzakura Kageyoshi and charges Byakuya.

- c144, Rosa Rubicundior, Lilio Candidior: Most people know about this one already, but it's a good one. This is a line from the Carmina Burana song "Veni, Veni, Venias" (which is also recited in Sephiroth's theme, if you're into FF7). The full verse is Rosa rubicundior, Lilio candidior, omnibus formosior, semper in te glorior! (Redder than the rose, whiter than the lily, more beautiful than all, you are my constant pride/I will always glory in you!) Obviously, its the chapter after the previous one in which Renji falls, having failed. There's way too many possible meanings involved with this one to explore fully.

My faves for their multi-faceted meaning:

*Not Perfect Is GOod
Sooooo smart on the word play :love This one’s my all-time favorite.

*Dumdum-Dummy-Dumbstruck
How is it possible that a man, whose mother-tongue is Japanese, can have so much fun with the English word, “dumb”? My personal interpretation -- Kurotsuchi’s use of dummy organs (made in less than an hour… kinda like glasses from Lens Crafters :D) makes Szayel’s vaunted intellect appear positively teeny. In response, Szayel is reduced to near-speechlessness, or dumbstruck (though as I recall, he began to repeatedly babble “s#!t” at one point).

This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jugulator) is what wikipedia has to say about this word that doesn’t actually exist in the dictionary… but it should!!! Aside from wikipedia’s definition (that a Jugulator basically is the violent embodiment of the world ending), to my mind a Jugulator MUST be someone who always goes for the jugular, a person with an unswerving killer instinct, who will never hesitate to take the killing shot. I’d like to think that that’s Grimmjow and Ichigo’s final battle in a nutshell. TK couldn’t have found a better title for these chapters, IMHO.

*Scratch The Sky
I’ve just always loved the sound of that chapter title. I do have a question about it, though. I wonder if it’s named this because in this chapter, it’s revealed that Zangetsu’s special power is Getsuga Tenshou? (the translation here (http://www.onemanga.com/Bleach/161/08/) is “ Moon Fang Sky Charge‘)


One thing….. I simply do not get Blookin’ Beast. Does anyone know what a Blookin’ is? (Google kept steering me toward Bleach manga :D) Thanks in advance for any possible answers :)

When that chapter came out a lot of people had said maybe he meant broken, but i think that since he used blockin as the replacement that must be what he meant with blookin

Can't believe I haven't posted in this. Here are some of my favorites.

Ch.1 Death & Strawberry - I do honestly remember the first chapter title as one of the defining points of when I first glanced at all the chapters that were out. I just like that it's basically 2 characters, but not. :D I just love it. :)

Ch.33 ROCKIN’ FUTURE 7 - Gotta love what he's implying there. :fu It's starting to come together...

Ch.41-43 Princess & Dragon - Like I said, I love it when he does that. :)

Black & White - These chapters are always great. Meant more progression for Ichigo. Still waiting for number 4..... :hm

Ch.157 Cat And Hornet - :)

Ch.162 Black Moon Rising - Can't go wrong with that one.

Ch. 215 Tug Your God Out This one stands out for personal reasons. Was around the time I started to follow the manga regularly. :D

Ch. 220 King & His Horse - :) :rofl

Ch. 236 The Sun Already Gone Down - So ominous, it sends chills down my spine.

@ Shannon, Sola - Kubo actually had a pretty deep symbolism behind "Bang the Bore," and it wasn't in a (intended) pervy way either.

Here's some more context from the Volume 30 thread (http://www.bleachasylum.com/showthread.php?t=2089&page=13), describing/showing the pictures between chapters. For 265, Kubo wrote "The bore kills the Boreas." You can see the actual sketch if you scroll down the page to hyiceme's post.

Anyway, here's Guildy's superb explanation:
Is the fifth referring to their fight? "The bore" I know refers to Nejibana (bore = the cusp of a large wave), so does that mean "the Boreas" referes to Shirayuki? It makes sense I guess since 'Boreas' is the Greek god of the North Wind, the one that's supposed to bring winter. Oh Kubo, you so crasy. I guess if you look at it that way it's true-- Nejibana -did- break Shirayuki. XD

As for my own favorites - I loved Kubo's allusions to music and remixes in the earlier chapters, like "Breakthrough the Roof" with all of its "mixes." I miss his funkier early stuff.

Ch. 231-2 Mascaron Drive (2)- A Mascaron is a humanoid face carved into a building, sometimes chimeric in nature. They were used to frighten away evil spirits. Kubo is a big fan of architecture. And a drive is an offensive play in some sports. I would say this probably makes pretty good sense considering it's when Grimmjow Luppi and Yammy show up to distract the away team while Orihime is being kidnapped.


My personal favorite is "If you call me Beast Kill you like Tempest." Not sure why, just sounds awesome. I also like "To Close Your World." Not all that interesting, but it's just neat and the title page was awesome for it.

Well, actually the official French translation for Getsuga Tenshou is "Lunar fangs scratching the sky" so it explains perfectly the title.


By the way someone got the meaning of 136 "night of the wijnruit"?

I like the title 214 "Immanent God blues" not quite sure what it means either.

This title is really funny and easy to figure out: 221 "Let eat the world's end"
