Sano sniffed as he placed the change on the counter. Randomly sniffing when it rained was a habit he formed long ago, he'd forgotten when exactly. It was convenient because it let him hide a few things at once, with just that simple habit.

Before people always used to ask him why he was so pale, and yet never seemed to be sick. It was a source of anxiety for him. People were already instinctively nervous around him without having a reason to be suspicious as well. By just randomly sniffing all the time, people's own imagination let them assume he was sickly, which also caused them to stay clear of him. A perfect way to live for Sano.

He took his goods, looked at the shopkeeper and nodded good evening. That simply invoked a nervous nod in return from the shopkeeper. Apart from his pale skin, Sano's strangely coloured eyes with dark circles around them, accented by his brow and bony physique didn't really endear him to anyone. The past 100 years of his life have always been like that.

Sano stepped out of the shop into the pouring rain. He was the only person outside wearing only a thin top, shorts, and sandals. His inadequate outfit was rounded off with a tattered white and black scarf, which looked like it had seen more of life than he had. He produced an additional item of garb from his bag, a woollen cap with a colour scheme similar to his scarf. Pulling it over his uncombed hair, he ventured into the streets, covering his purchases as he went.

The small shopping bag didn't contain much, not that Sano could buy much with his measly salary. He saved quite a bit by not having to buy so much food. His main source of nourishment wasn't really sold in supermarkets, though it may be found lurking in such places from time to time...

Sano suddenly caught a whiff of something. He stopped discretely and turned around. Off in the distance, he saw a woman wondering through the street. The only things untoward about her, were that fact that she was walking without an umbrella, and the large chain that was hanging from her chest. After so many years, Sano had become desensitized to the sight.

Before, he would have been gripped by fear, wondering why he could see these strange people and no one else could. At first he tried to help them, but it rapidly became obvious that they were the dead, and there was nothing he could do for them. Almost as alarming as his ability to see them, was his craving to eat them. It was an urge he fought desperately against. Even up to this very day, it burns in him, the craving to consume them.

He could not bring himself to eat these people, but he undoubtedly felt that he had to eat them to live. An answer to his dilemma came quite quickly though. From the first moment he had ever seen a plus, and he realized he wouldn't eat them, he discovered something that he could bring himself to eat. The hollows. Experience from the 1st time he saw a hollow eat a plus, told him that where there were pluses, there would be hollows, and his craving to eat them was just as strong as the craving to eat a plus. With that subconscious thought he started walking toward the woman, knowing that supper was on its way.

He noticed that the hollows were drawn to these spirits' energy. He also realized that this was the energy that he and the hollows needed to eat. He would approach the hollows without fear though. It had long ago become clear to him, that until he transformed, he did not have any significant amount of energy at all. To the hollows, he was indistinguishable from normal people, which allowed him to get really close.

He'd become so good that he could slay a hollow and drag it off in the midst of the public. Sure enough, a hollow appeared, roaring as it charged for the woman. The woman spirit screamed and started running in Sano's direction.

Perfect

He ducked into an alley and waited. The hollow drew close, mere inches from snapping up the woman in its jaws. As it was about to strike, a transformed Sano leapt from the alley. In one motion, he bit into the hollow's neck, and flung it into the alley using only his neck strength. He set upon feeding in an instant, before the hollow had a chance to realize what was happening. It was over as soon as it began. Sano consumed the entire beast before anyone that could, could even see the grizzly scene. Entrails, blood, even bones, everything was consumed.

Sano stood, wiped some blood from his mouth, and licked his hand clean.

"Waste not, want not", he chuckled.

He proceeded to the alley entrance, picked up his groceries, and proceeded home. The woman spirit had disappeared, but Sano didn't care. He'd had his fill for the night. Even though the hollow wasn't that big, Sano would be good for another two days before he had to eat again. Sano stopped and looked at the sky, feeling the rain fall on his face.

That feels nice...

He sniffed loudly, and continued on his way.
