About FFXIII, I have no problem with the design. Of course, I'm a bit tired of Nomura and his obsession with belts, zippers and black leather, and I loved Yoshitaka Amano. But I kinda dig this new heroine's design. It's not silly or too fanservicy.
And what's important imo is the personality and the story anyway.

My favourite is ff8 followed by ff9. I didn't get to finish ff7 so i'm not sure how i feel about it. As for ff13 main character design, I love it. The designer said he designed her to be a female version of Cloud. I really want to play the game, it looks really promising.

I kinda understand how you feel Gintoki. I didn't really like the later ff as well. I only played ff8, 9, 10 and 12 though. However, I had the story for ff10 spoiled for me, so the big motivation was kinda gone. And I didn't finish ff7 but since i played ff8 first, i was a bit turned off by ff7's graphics, though I admit the story was good to where i played it. I like ff12 the least in terms of story, but the game play in ff12 were interesting to say the least, although I miss the old feel of previous ff games as well =(.

but i really think ff13 will rock. It seems to be a combi of ff7 and 8, which is fine by any standards. ^_^ i posted some images a while back if you want to check it out.

New Interview With Tetsuya Nomura on Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII.

Although Tetsuya Nomura began at Squaresoft in 1990 as ‘monster designer’ on Final Fantasy V, his big break came when he was promoted to character designer for Final Fantasy VII, the PlayStation 1 game that became by some distance the most popular entry in the series, thanks in no small part to the iconic cast that is still inspiring prequels and sequels today.

At the recent Square Enix Party 2007 his work permeated every corner, from the figures on sale to the trailer theatre, and the vast majority of upcoming Square Enix products feature his input in some way. His roles within the company have ranged from creating and directing the Kingdom Hearts franchise, to directing the CGI film Advent Children. With his appointment as character designer for the entire FFXIII: Fabula Nova Crystallis project, as well as director of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, no one within Square Enix is more important to its future success. We spoke to Nomura about everything final, fantastical, and just plain antithetical.

The word ‘versus’ suggests it will be a counterpoint to Final Fantasy XIII rather than a companion piece – is the intention in a way to create a play of light and dark, to contrast with XIII rather than complement it?

Tetsuya Nomura: In Versus XIII we want to elaborate more on the world and the human side of the characters, their way of thinking and how and why they behave like they do. This might take the game conception to a darker level than the other games in the FF series. Because of this, it has to be more realistic, but Versus is not an antithesis – I don’t want to simply go in the opposite direction to XIII. That’s absolutely not something I’m willing to do.

How Versus XIII’s concept works is difficult to explain, because it’s really more about the series as a whole than just FFXIII. There are no explicit rules for how a Final Fantasy game should be – and so every version is that design team’s interpretation of certain themes, and their answer to that question of what FF should be. FFXIII belongs to that mainstream tradition. I want to propose another view of how FF could be, or should be: there is a long tradition, and my intention is that Versus will be distinct from that.

How do you consider that Versus XIII can offer this counterpoint to the Final Fantasy series?

The stories from the past entries in the Final Fantasy series are not exactly as I would have done, but that’s as it should be because I didn’t direct them. My only concern in terms of Versus XIII is that FF always talks about human emotion and psychologies in a broad way, and I want to go deeper in terms of offering some crude reality in terms of human emotion or human behaviour. The goal, when a player holds a controller and plays an RPG, is to make them believe in another world – to experience a dream in a fictional world. It will be different in Versus XIII because of the intrusion of the real world, and things that are really happening. There will be less fiction and more reality.

Do you mean real-world events?

Absolutely.

So Versus XIII shares little with the other games in Fabula Nova Crystallis?

The only common element to all three games is an underlying mythology that inspires each game’s story. There are no particular shared aspects of the stories, characters or locations, but there is a battle of the gods that lies behind each tale and gives it inspiration in a different way.

Do you think the power of the new generation of consoles means that there is a responsibility on game developers to deliver a new kind of gaming experience, rather than just better graphics, and is this part of your thinking with Versus XIII?

Is there a new direction for game conception in general? If there is, then like you say it’s less about breathtaking graphics and perhaps more of a level design problem – one of the directions that interests me is how to manage and create, using the PS3, a seamless environment. In the past, field space has always been limited technically – in Versus XIII we want to see a seamless environment, and that in itself will create new situations and game elements. For example, someone could be shooting at you from a very great distance, or a battle could be happening both outside and inside a building in a very seamless manner. That’s part of what we want to do using new technology.

All the games you have been director of have tended to move away from a traditional RPG interface towards more dynamic interactions, particularly in battles. Will this be something that is carried over to the new game?

It’s true that we don’t want to create a classic RPG with a game system driven by command menus. Our intention with Versus XIII is to create a more action-oriented system with more intuitive controls, but this doesn’t mean the entire game will be action. The only firm instruction I’ve given the team is to look at the best examples of the third-person shooter genre – not in simplistic terms, like controls or mechanics, but in the way they create tension and mood and incorporate the action within that.

Those previous projects as director were the Kingdom Hearts games, which are much lighter than what we know of Versus XIII. Is the darker concept you have outlined a necessary change for you as director?

The world of Versus XIII might be a little closer to my personal taste than Kingdom Hearts, but the entire project owes something to Kingdom Hearts as well. When I first began KH I was part of the FF core team, and tried to bring elements of that into the development. The KH team was always inspired by FF, and I’d like to see that reversed. But as for the differences between KH and FF, KH is a lighter world of magic, fantasy, and people doing good things. I’ve been in that world for a very long time – perhaps too long.

Well, there's usually one game, in particular, that persuades me to get a system (FFVII, Ocarina of Time, and so on), but I need to see more good games on the horizon (or already out) before I get a new system.

FFXII spinoff and the new FFT:A game (there's no remake in the works, unless you're thinking of the FFI and FFII remakes) are being developed for the Nintendo DS.

As for battle systems, I liked the ATB system, it was what defined FF imo. But ff12's battle system was good too with its gambits system though i certainly missed the FF feel of it. So I'm hoping ff13 will have an updated version of the ATB maybe? :3

FF7 and FF8 had like the best characters; you had Cloud and Vincent for FF7, and Squall and Irvine in FF8. Those are awesome sword to gun characters.

Oh yeah FF7: Dirge of the Cerberus was a really good and one of my favorite games, it had great gameplay. ^^

@~L~ the ps3 is really fun, the online play is awesome not to mention its free lol. Also the best games seem to be coming out around this time, like Darkness, Ninja Gaiden, Lair, Assassins Creed. You should get it as soon as possible lol ^^. Same to you Byakuya ^^

well the online play is really simple, you just register what your screename and stuff is going to be. Like mines Ichigo_K. And whatever game your rent or buy it usually has multiplayer system online.. So basically you are playing a game online with a bunch of people. Like I'm currently playing darkness and the online gameplay is like up to 7 people and you go around trying to shoot each other to get a large amount of kills to the time is up. And the person with the most kills wins.

And Dirge of the Ceberus is quite awesome, I really didn't find anything wrong with it. Like the villans look awesome. And the gameplay is just so fun. Its like freelancing with the ability to shoot your gun anywhere freely. You should try it out ~L~ ^^

Dirge was ok. Could have been better. The targeting at sometimes was a real pain. You aim somewhere and you show somewhere else. That didn't happen that often though. The camera also could have used some tweaking. The story was at least well thought out. A couple of other things should have went back to the drawing board though.

I didn't buy it, I just borrowed it from my friend that did. I don't think I would have bought it. Probably just would have rented it.

Most of the haters that bad mouth the game were expecting something else and were let down when it wasn't what they wanted. The game on it's own, is a good one and holds it's own.

Well, I have another question: what was your most hated boss fight?
Which monster was hardest for you to beat?

Mine would be the judge from FF X;
for regular monster I´d say the Morbol from FF VIII.

The hardest one for me would be Penance from FFX. But in the end, I managed to beat him. It took me like. . .10 times, if I remember right. Dark Yojimbo was surprisingly easy, while Magus Sisters were surprisingly hard! >.<;

Another challenging one is Ozma from FFIX. Then, Emerald and Ruby Weapons from FFVII. Seriously, I didn't beat them at first try. XD But I'm not so sure of Ruby . . . o.O

But seriously, most of the big boss from earlier FFs are pretty easy compared to recent ones. Using counter mime, you could beat emerald and ruby without ever touching your controller. The bosses in XII are on a completely different level. Has anyone else here been able to beat Omega Mark XII or Yazimat? I have and they are no easy task.

Agreed, XII optional bosses were quite difficult to beat. >_>
I fount Omega Weapon from FFVIII harder to beat than Ruby and Emerald though, especially on my first try. (I didn't have lionheart or anything fancy.)

Well, again, like in VII, in VIII there were a lot of ways to make Omega a cake walk. By setting up Rinoa right, you could spam Limited Moon and never take any damgae from him. Or by exchaning in cards and getting them back from the guys on the Ragnarok, you could stock up on Holy Wars and Megalixers and such and never die that way.

I was even able to beat him without any invincibility at all. Max out spirit and vitality, use auto protect and auto shelid. All you have to do is wait for him to do something, then counter with what solves its, while using lionhear inbetween. Omega flare/beam would usually leave on person alive, with all the defence stuff up.

Yea, that's all a lot of work, but it can be made very easy. Also a lot of work is getting all the materia needed to make the weapons a cake walk.

But in XII, it doesn't matter how much work, how much leveling or how much of the best stuff you have. Or even how good you are. Those fights are difficult! No way to get around it. That's why I like XII so much, even though a lot of people hate it cause it was too easy. :/

I had absolutely no problems with the bosses in FF XII;
Yiazmat just has been a very~ long fight, but it was okay for me. I beat Omega MK XII on my second approach (no big problem).
I immediately beat Ultima and Zodiac too.
But my party was really powered up (that´s for sure^^).

I haven't played FFXII, so I know nothing of the bosses there. :P
Well, I didn't use any umm... tactics that make Emerald and Ruby pieces of cake. I beat them normally, so that's why they were pretty challenging, but not the hardest bosses ever. Penance was definitely harder to beat, for instance. :D

@MeiYara: I had Auron, Wakka & Rikku in my party. I had upgraded them (and the others too) to their max stats. But even with max stats Penance was difficult to beat. I remember just attacking him normally, when I had the chance -> 99999 with every hit.

Wakka's Attack Reels is almost necessary in the fight, and I can tell for sure that it does NOT make Penance a piece of cake, it's just very useful. Penance's defence and all are so high, that Attack Reels doesn't take as much damage from him as from normal enemies. If I don't remember wrong, I had Rikku use a mix that casts Regen and some other good things on my party. I remember using that a few times.

Then there's the thing that someone has to be the victim for Penance, after he drops his lower body, so that he doesn't get the chance to use Immolation (it caused Armor Break and other annoying effects >.<) on anyone else but one certain character, which was Auron for me. Then attack with the other two, while using Sentinel with the victim, so he/she takes Immolation on him/her. After the Immolation, you can dispel the annoying effects from the victim, or if you want to be more risky, don't dispel so Penance gets to kill the victim (but in my case the victim usually had Auto-Life on, even though I didn't use the more risky way. . .I mean that just in case Penance killed him). Auron was the victim for me since he sometimes Counter-Attacked the Immolation. . .again if my memory doesn't fail me.

I can understand your point with his lips. Before I thought of changing them, but in the end I let them the way they are now.
When I draw FF characters (mainly Tetsuya Nomura´s style or CG designed characters), I tend to draw these kind of lips.
But I´ll see what I can change in the future, so that males won´t look too girlish. ^_^

Yeah i know, I also used a lot of lightning magic as well =P. But everytime i replay that part i can never escaped it. You know you can do stuff that makes you avoid fighting it, so you don't run out of time.

Summons are only good in the beginning in terms of attack power and of course the cool animation <333 though it can get tiring, but I put up with it by playing with Boost. Once your attack is 9999 you don't need summons by then :cool: with the exception of some of the summons that can break the 9999 damage limit.

I enjoyed collecting GF's much more than espers that's for sure. Cause they do give you cool abilities. I can't remember well now, but I know one gives you the ability to purchase items from whenever, one converts items to magic, etc, and MUG!! :yell I also like Revive, and lol at Devour when they switch to a field of flowers. xDDD Can't remember them all.

As for limit breaks, you're right Lion Heart owns all. It's sweet seeing those 9999 strikes for multiple of times <333. With that, Ultima Weapon was a walk in the park. I remember having trouble with it the first time, cause I didn't had a lot of things with me and i didn't have good limit breaks as well. yeah i know, Ultima Weapon, some of you will laugh. :rolleyes: I didn't bother fighting Omega Weapon though, cause it was near the end of the game, i wanted to see the ending :D.

Is that a human Ifrit I see there? O_O I can't say which are my favourite summons. But I always get excited when I see the old schoolers like Shiva, Ifrit and Bahamut. Shiva is always so cool....I wish either hitsugaya's or rukia's zanpaktou looks like that :wtf. Ahh, i love all of FF8's summons. The animation for all of them were just too superb not to love them. Too many to name here xDD. Alexander in ff9 was also so magnificent, angel wings ftw!! But he defeated Bahamut in the ff9 (for storyline purposes). :cry

I thought Doomtrain was one of the coolest Guardian Forces in FFVIII. I've always liked him, he's also one of the few summons who represents a vehicle. Doomtrain gets no love. :( Poor guy.

But also, Diablos is cool. . .and I have always liked Shiva as well, but who doesn't like her? She's apparently the most popular summon ever. I also like Ifrit, Quezacotl and Bahamut. . .Odin and Gilgamesh are also great. . .and Eden too. . .and Ark from FFIX.

I like them all, but those are one of my favorites. ^-^

Yeah, the Square Visual Works guys have always been wizards with CG, and with Advent Children they really raised the standards again, just like they did with Spirits Within back in the days. ^_^

The battle system in Dirge of Cerberus is.....well, special.
It´s not easy and first I constantly got pwned (especially through these annoying snipers); I´m not used to playing shooters, but in the end I got familiar with the system and improved.
A bonus is, furthermore that you get to see lots of well-known places (I especially liked Shinra Mansion).
And yeah, the graphics are gorgeous as always! ^^

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised!
You enter it through the canalization and you even get to see the room in the caves beyond the Mansion where Vincent slept for so many years in a coffin! But sadly nothing particulary exciting happens (just a soldier jumps out of the coffin and attacks you...-_-).
But you also have these large circular staircases and there´re all the rooms as in FF VII as well!
And the atmosphere is great nonetheless! ^^

I bought DoC last Christmas (it was not that expensive anymore); the battle system sucks (at least for me, who had problems to handle it at first), but the atmosphere, the characters and the whole FF VII world are great nonetheless, and if it´s not too expensive anymore where you live, then I´d recommend it for you, cause.....well, it´s FFVII!!!
If there will be no sequel to FFVII, then DoC is the last compilation title we´ll get to play of FFVII....:cry

Ok, side games. The cards from 8 and 9 were super fun. I like 8's more because cards were actually useful! But some the abilities got really lame really fast. Like random and same. But once you got rid of them, the game was a lot easier.

9's was fun, but to simple with no rewards. The pure randomness of the arrows got annoying. I can remember reloading over and over to get good cards. But it was a challenge to get all of them and the max ranking. Not as hard as getting the Excalibur II, but still hard.

Blitz Ball was ok, but not as fun as the cards for me. Many of hours were spent leveling up my characters to max. And in the end, it really didn't matter. It was just too time consuming with not enough action. Which is why I like Blitz Ball in X-2 about 342546457674563 times more. That was fun.

Then there´s of course the FF VII Compilation: Crisis Core is still to come (September in Japan; I think).
Before Crisis (Mobile phone game).
There´re rumors about a FF VII remake, though Tetsuya Nomura said that there are no plans and no production yet.
I keep my fingers crossed for a sequel to FF VII though, because the secret ending of DoC shows the resurrection of Genesis (who is somewhat like a second Sephiroth; one-winged angel).
That´s because a sequel should be possible (I think it depends on the succes of the whole compilation).

Regarding FF XIII: IIrc there´ll be around 6 games/ movies/ whatever for the whole compilation (Mobile Phone games, PSP, PS 3):
we already know the regular FF XIII (female lead), FF Versus XIII and FF Agito XIII.
Whole compilation = Fabula Nova Crystallis.

I'm also kinda getting sick of all the spinoffs to be quite honest, and I'd much rather have a complete remake of the original FFVII for PS3 than another sequel >_>

Well.. What they really confirmed was that they're not currently working on an FFVII remake. The future is still uncertain.

That is true. You never know. They have released plenty of older FF's for recent systems. At least there is always that. Those games are usually upgraded in someway too compared to the original. So just keep your fingers crossed!

Both FFIII and FFIV are getting remakes for the DS, so we know that Square-Enix isn't entirely against the notion of remakes. Definitely, a remake of FFVII would help convince me to buy a PS3, so I'm hoping they do one.

Indeed! I personally can't wait for the FF4 remake, since it's my favourite game among the classic Final Fantasties.

I will dissagree... Come with those remakes.. they did ramaked for evry console FFS. i prefer playing FF4(2 japanese) on SNES instead o bying DS or PSP ...

Well.. I thought the FF3 remake for the DS was fairly decent, and FF4 has always been a way better game than FF3 so I don't see why it's remake wont be amazingly awesome even on the DS. ^_^

Some time ago I read an interview with Tetsuya Nomura (or was it Hironubo Sakaguchi...?):
He said that there are a lot of rumors (especially in Europe) regarding a FF VII remake;
he confirmed that currently there is no production and no plans to make a remake,
but he also said (and this is quite remarkable, I think) that a lot
of the newer programmers who joined SquareEnix (and now work on FF XIII), just decided to work for SE because they want to make a FF VII remake in the future!
There is still hope!! :p

Tetsuya Normura is at least thinking about a remake;
he said: "As long as there´re people who would make a remake
and fans who would buy the product in the end, there is
no definte denial."

Ah that's interesting, I think the chances of a remake in the future are pretty high. It might even sell more than the original did (the number was 9.7 or something closer to 10 million) since it's been hyped even more now and younger generations have taken interest in it. ^_^

That was when I first really got interested in a remake!! ;)

But I would also like a sequel; I don´t know: I just can´t get enough of the FF VII universe.
As long as they make a good remake and a good sequel
and don´t ruin the whole compilation, then I don´t have a problem with it! :)

As I wrote before: they´ll surely consider the succes of the whole compilation (AC, BC, CC, DoC), as well as the demand and will decide whether to expand the compilation or not.
But I think that the chances are quite high, because FF VII just is very popular! :love

Of course I've seen it! It was extremely awesome.
They've done similar things in the past, though you're probably already aware of the PS2 Tech-Demo for FFVIII and the N64 one for FFVI.

Yeah, but I think they may be waiting for the PS3 to sell some more consoles first. So if they start working on it we'll probably not see it before 2010 - 2010 or something like that.

Yeah, I like the futuristic style a bit more than the historical settings.
But the trailer for FF XIII reminds me a lot of Star Wars;
especially the soldiers.
