Hey guys,
I want to know how others go around with money, accounts, etc.
I just checked my account (internet) and saw that my money had finally arrived (job), so ! was happy! Now, ofcourse i have also bills, not much, but I do have them and I needed to check with my dad how much I owe him for my health insurance. So after I transferred/wired the money to his account (from now on monthly:cry)
I checked back with my account again. Knowing how much I have left and 'need' for the other bills I thought to myself; Hey, I can put some money away now on my 'savings' account (I barely get any interest but I need to go online and do stuff to get that money). Now I wired the amount I think I can spare to the savingsaccount.
I still got some things to pay for this month and I needs me some JEANS:D But I think if this keeps up I can wire a good amount of money monthly to savings. Also, I am not a big spender (atleast...sometimes^^) and can handle myself quite well with money now, I couldn't when I was younger but now if i have only a bit left and I go shopping with a friend (well, she goes shopping) I have no problems at all not spending any.
Also, anyone into the stock market? Í know I am, but where? I have no clue^^
So how do you handle money and do you save up for any reason? perhaps saving for a car, bike, vacation or just the knowledge that you've got something in case of an emergency? Share your opinions, advice etc. here!

Mmm, how I handle money?
1. Food is my no. 1 priority, so I don't mind spending on food at all.
2. Bills are handled by my mom. I just hand her some $$ every month, so she handles all the bills in the family.
3. I love clothes, so I am always buying them. Not necessary branded stuff tho. But I'm a fashion whore, so I'll buy whatever looks good tho.
Btw, Riekie, its interesting, playing in stocks. I actually don't work. But I do invest some cash in stocks, and that more than keeps me afloat every month, so I'm not worried about cash now.
I've got money hidden elsewhere, like in cookie jars, and banks, and insurance, and a whole lotta other stuff, so I'm well covered now. ^__^
how i handle money:headscratch
well back when i worked i automatically deposited my entire paycheck, then every week i would withdraw 50 or 60 dollars (to have some cash)
i only deposited it because the bank is a safer place than anywhere else, and in even if anything happened to the bank, my money would still be safe
and the reason i withdrew so little was to ensure i didn't waste my money on stupid stuff, it wasn't my goal to save it all though:D
i never had a lot of bills *still lives with parents* but i could easily pay any bills because i constantly knew how much i had in the bank
and i never mess around with the stock market, because i don't care about it, making money easily like that never interested me 9thats if i'd make any at all)

I don't know much about stocks, just that I have them and need to sell HIGH:yell
a few months ago my dad gave my brother and I a few hundred stocks worth alot of cash, so I wanted to sell them when they were high, not wanting it to drop dramatically. I continued on for days asking my dad how high those stocks were and if he sold them already....lol, he still didn't sell 'em but we got the money that they were worth at some point. Can't touch the money though:yell
Lol, I think i should seriously take a look at the stock market and buy some on my own, getting more knowledge etc.
How long have you been doing this Nez? buying stocks to live off? You seem real good at it!

I spend probably most on going out with friends and food whenever that is but all other times I just leave it in the bank since I always have something big to save up for!:p
For example my trip to Singapore, I didn't touch a cent and then I spent it all when I was over there. I'm good at saving when I'm trying to save but all other times I'm terrible since I want to just spend and be liberal with my money haha XD.

How stark handles money. Will not say how much he makes that is not for you to know.
alright first thing is first bills water, electricity, monthly homing bill, and phone and ect..
Next is the bills for food-well you have to eat but I tend to get best prices on stuff as much as I can do not like to pay well over what I should.
finally clothing though this is the one major I tend to spend the least amount of cash on but cloths are a most needed.
alright then once the three major things food, bills and cloths are finished I always put money in the bank for savings (because at one point you might need it try to stay on the safe side)
Next this is the money I use the least money to go with friends to do stuff on the rare occasions that I do not have work and school I go have a bit of fun but do not spend outrages amount of cash on this.
IN this one I mostly go to movie with them some times concerts (about twice) and do other things like that.
and finally every once in a while I will spend my cash on some things that I want like a new game are something like that most recently another computer (this one is basically a gaming monster the way I built it and the best part it is cheaper to build it yourself and its the one ill be playing games on the most.) and cod4 (call of duty 4) and ut (unreal tournament).
and that is basically my way of doing things just thought I would share with you all.
Im too young xD But, i have everything planned out.
My goal is to spend as little as possible, and save as much as i can.
Water, Electricity, Rent, Phone + Internet will probably be most important to me once i move out, and even though i will save, i will have "spoil money" which would probably be 200 euro to go crazy on with a month and just buy things that i like, like clothes ect.
Liqour money is pretty important too xD gotta have the best, so gotta save.
I do plan on investing in the stock market, and buying some chinese company shares, as well as get involved in real estate. you gotta risk money to make money.

When I started, I was pretty much like Rain. I would only withdraw a certain amount per check for spending needs, and the rest was saved up for college, which I pretty much used up by the end.
Now that college is done, I'm a little more relaxed with my money, and have very often times splurged beyond reason quite a few times, which is very very bad...I do have quite a bit saved up already, but I am very bad with 'saving' lol I often times need someone with me to make sure I don't go crazy...

I get 90 euros stufi every month and that's my income lolll xD
but I also have internet account/internet savings account (van de postbank xD je krijgt veel meer rente bij internetsparen >D) and I love it <3333 I always want at least 100 euros on my normal account, but whenever I have more than 200 on I save 100 euros <3 I am saving for Japan round 3 you see >__>; I almost have 4000 euros saved up again but I need more cuz' I want to have something left when I go lol XD
and when I am not in Japan, I am a total cheapskate >___>; I HATE spending money D: (though it goes surprisingly easy when I'm in Japan 8D;;;) I'd rather not have anything in my wallet and I refuse to buy something when I can't get a discount on it or if it costs more than 10 euros without discount XDDDDD
luckily my parents pay my clothes and I also don't have to contribute to my insurances etc. or at least, that money we get for health insurance just automatically goes to my mom so it's not as if I can miss it :/

Well, I don't go into the Stock Markets. Don't have the patience, the nerves of steel or the mathematics to work out how to pick 'good' or 'bad' stocks.
Most of my funds are in fixed deposits in the bank.
I try and save as much as I can nowadays, because I have a mortgage, car-upkeep costs, parents repayments, grocery and utility bills, and numerous other things to support on a weekly basis. Doesn't mean that I scrooge on going out or shopping, but I do find myself thinking hard if i really really need that. :D

Woah, €4000 already? how long do you plan on going there? but I think your ticket is in there aswell..so yeah, bye bye to ALOT then. en 90 eu for studiefinanciering? ik weet dat ik maar 70 ofzo kreeg vorig jaar...hahahha alles gaat omhoog, gladly also the money we get for the health insurance! man, that's a bit more than half of mine a month! lol.
lucky you that your parents pay for your clothes! that saves alot of money. but then you don't get an allowance as you say you'll get €90 stufi.
I gotta save up for a trip to Japan or au-pairing as well. I want to go to Japan and am trying to get an au-pair job there. though i've not been lucky yet. Still..as long as I can 'work' here and save up 'til when I finally go au-pairing somewhere, hopefully Japan, but I also got interests in the States and Aussie then I atleast got the money for it aswell.
sorry for the long post, I tend to wander off of the main subject^^

I don't invest in the stock market, but I do own property under my name. (Courtesy of mom.) However, since the housing market is going bust internationally (even more so in California), that may have not been the best decision if I had known the subprime loans were going to tank the real estate boom.
On a personal note, I have three bank accounts, one for savings, one for checking, and another checking for monies going toward a photography studio. =) Also, I get an allowance from my parents, lol!

@Riekie: als jij 70 krijgt betekent dat alleen dat jouw ouders rijker zijn :P niet dat alles omhoog gaat xD ik krijg al 3 jaar ongeveer 90 euro namelijk~ 91,81 om precies te zijn lol but yeah, the 4000 euros look like much, but last year the ticket was 1030 euros already and the prices for plane tickets are going up too TT___TT; and I also spent about 1000 euros or more there, so I'd like to have almost/over 5000 euros when I go and buy the ticket in a year xD
ik heb een studentenrekening en een internetspaarrekening (vanwege de rente dus, was geloof ik toch 70 euro dit jaar) en dat gaat zoveel fijner dan normale rekeningen~ heb zojuist weer 100 euro gespaard XD 3800 euro w00t! XD ik haat bellen, dus ik heb geen telefoonrekening lol en eigenlijk heb ik die zowieso niet, want mijn ma betaald het... xD (ik heb geen abonnement maar kan opladen wanneer ik wil en dat gaat dan van haar rekening af....) maar ik hoef echt maar 1x in de 3 of 4 maanden op te laden en dat is dan 10 euro ofzo dus ze vind het ook niet erg >__>;
and yeh I don't get allowance xD and I don't buy clothes *that* much, but I have expensive taste >__>; (almost everything I own is from espirit and almost nothing costs below 80 euros there :T) If I had endless money I'd only buy classy stuff from Claudia Sträter and all kinds of brands lol
au-pairing in Japan o___o; wow! it must be hard though >__<; especially if the family has 0 knowledge of English and you have next to no knowledge of Japanese D: I really hope you can get a job there! else you should just go on vacation with me in 2 years haha I always go 5 weeks, so it's a nice lengt <333 if you've got enough money saved up you can always go~ youth hostels are cheap too and else you can always force yourself into juu and space's place lolll XD
sorry for Dutch and off-topicness lol it's Riekie's fault! *points finger* XD

Ooww!!! <---sorry, off topic!
Zo, das veel rente zeg! dat tikt lekker aan dan!
And yeah, you are right. Everything is getting more and more expensive, also plane tickets>.< The tax, oil price on those things are insane! Btw..did you fly non-stop last year or had to change somewhere? Also in those 5 weeks, you go back to the family or you just go round-tripping on your own? Still sounds amazing though! and always on your own right? Lol, my parents will never let me T_T
about the au-pairing in japan; a woman has contacted me and she needs an au-pair. Though when I talked about it with my mom she was all like: no. you can't do that and it's too far away. you need to go with an agency blablabla. Okay I understand her concern but still...I wanna go and explore!:D Perhaps I can even do a course in japanese there. (hopefully).
yeah! if i ever make it to japan/tokyo (soonish) we all definitely have to meet up!!! Would be so much fun^^
Sorry for the dutch you guys, some stuff just can't be translated right^^

no I had one stopover in Zurich, is only an hour from A'dam and then on to Tokyo. And in the 5 weeks, I went to my hostfamily for 3 weeks and in those 3 weeks I also went to another family I know by myself for a couple of days and I went to Tokyo with my sis/lil' bro/sis' bf for 2 days too <3 (disney lol) and other than that, I was always by myself yeh... and I just did alot of things by myself because my hostparents are farmers and extremely busy all day long ^^; my parents thought it was awesome xD they were really happy for me~
wow cool! I would have done it immediately .___.; I still want to teach in Japan like space and juu >__<; I hope I can graduate within the next 3 years T__T; though I myself would feel safer with a company too you know lol even though it's japan, there are plenty of crazy people there too >__<; (I have experience trust me, crazy people D: ) you should do a course in japanese, it just helps so much if you know a bit of japanese....
yeah~ japan meet lol XD or we could force everyone to come over here and have dutch meet haha XDDDD
yeh some stuff can't be translated, or could, but then you still wouldn't get it XDDD
as for money.... I need a job TT___TT; but I can't... I have no time because of my internship DDD:

ZOMG, €13,20 to go to Ammie?! THAT'S insane! <--is that with a 40% discount or without it? I've got a job in Bussum and thank goodness!!! for my voordeelurenkaart! now I pay €11, 70 to get there but once when I forgot to bring it with me (me all panicky) I paid €10, 70 to get back from Bussum to my place! that's just a 1 euro difference!! and did the conductor check me? Noo, ofcourse not! so I threw away alot of moneyT_T
Woah ann, that is so amazing! I don't think I have the guts to do everything on my own (especially if I speak like only 2 words of Japanese). 'Course IF I get that job I'll have to do everything by myself^^
Did you enjoy Disneyland there? I read that it's very small but still fun! As long as it has rollercoasters I'll love it! that reminds me, I wanna go to Six Flags..oo wait, Walibi!
It's great that you've got such a good bond with them and can come over in the summer! amazing!
about the job; perhaps working at appie in the weekend? or babysitting (in the weekend?). You've got a 10-week,5 days internship now or just 1 day a week? My friend who's studying German in Ammie only has to go to her internship once a week>.>
Ann-chan
01-27-2008, 04:24 PM
that's with 40% discount yeh T___T; imagine what it costs without..... which is why I only go on fridays XD going again in two weeks <3333
guess that's the difference XD cuz' I speak enough japanese to get around and stuff so I feel confident enough to do stuff there. yeh au-pairs have to do lots of stuff, you'll have to do groceries and clean and play with kids and everything lol
disneyland there isn't small, it's just less fun XD as in, Space Mountain is slow as hell because japs are all wusses... T__T; I was going: well, it was fun but way too slow... sis' bf who is a gigantic baseball player: hell no, it was scary already that would be even more scary @@ Imagine. >__>; You also have Disney sea, but we didn't go there cuz' they said it wasn't as much fun as normal Disneyland.... other than that, it was just way too hot those days and the first day I had been in a bus throughout the night for 12 hours without sleep T___T; so it was mainly tiring but fun I guess XD
LOL no I have school till late 2 days and then 3 days internship the whole year lol is your friend in teacher training or just german? if she's teacher training, is she 1st year? with us 1st years only have to go once a week too.... but I am 3rd year ^^;;; and in weekend I have to do homework, reflection, prepare for new lessons etc. and like now, there are meetings about the classes we teach and I have to do stuff for that etc. it's pretty busy ^^;
I used to have a job at appie, but I quit when I went into 3rd year, before I went to Japan... they said they wouldn't hire me after because I'm 20 this year >__>; too old for them :T but they all loved me lol and I made so much money then was about 2000-3000 euros in half a year <3 (cuz' I was always doing replacement/sunday work next to my normal two days... whenever they needed someone they'd call me first xD) and I hate babies/very small kids, so baby-sitting is out of the question lol
Riekie

Ooh okay! Well, my friend is in her 3rd year (teaching) and last year she had a 1 day internship and the year before aswell, if I can remember correctly. last year she went to Essen for a few months (she had to), do you have to go to a different country aswell for your study?
Woah, a slow space mountain, boring!! The faster the better! hahahhaha (sorry, rollercoaster nut)
Yeah, I think if you can speak the language well then ofcourse you're more confident and tend to do things on your own, because then you can express yourself better in certain situations. Gah, thinking about it, I really need to buy/ask 2 books about the language...perhaps that can help me, if I ever make it to Japan XDDD
Yeah..you've gotta do alot, but your main concern is taking care of the kids. brb to finish my sentence, gotta go eat!

well I can choose to do internship outside of holland but isn't obligatory :T lol 1 day internship.... should've gone to study there XD but I have more experience than her in the end so it's good XD
yeh I love fast stuff too <3333 way better >D oh buy, buy~ I have genki v1 (I need to study kanji TT^TT) and there's a v2 as well for more kanji/sentences etc. it's pretty handy <3 I should reserve some time after the test week to study some again, I want to be able to read more kanji D:
haha have a nice dinner <3333

Ooh, thanks for the book tip! Do you know one which handles kana too? I was at some blog and wrote down to books from that site, called: 'Japanese for everyone' and 'A guide to learning Japanese'. Lol, I got a big ol' map dedicated to japanese but it's not about 'reading the kana/kanji' as well>.> just one page about kana..not helpful.
aww thanks, we had icky chicken soup...not good.
and yeah, about the internships you're going through right now. You've got way more experience than her. How can you possibly learn something when you just need to go to some school once a week? Nothing I say. When I was in nursing school my internships were looooong. 5 days a week for 10 weeks straight..horrid I tell ya, but that is the best way to learn the job. Atleast, my opinion.
WOAH, you earnt alot of money at appie, so they do pay well^^ lol, I am way too old to get a job there>.> Still, glad that my one job pays alot, though not so happy about the taxes etc. Stupid government.
EDIT: help with the Genki V1 please! I've come across I site which sells Genki material but...which one/what do I need>.< Help!

I save money rather than spend it. In a year i'd make one or two big purchases (anything over $100) and that's it.
My aim is to save enough money that I can live on the interest earned yearly, without having to work (or having to work in a crappy job because i'm forced to due to lack of other finances)

Me and money... That's no easy constellation.
I get money from the state, so that I can study, but actually this money is too much and there's always some money left I can spend on something I like. A part of this money will be saved, so that I can buy something big, the other part will be spent on manga and conventions.

I get a relatively small allowance which i stretch by using public transport and skipping on lunches in college
also not going out clubbing and partying certainly helps!
When i mean not work a crappy job I do not want to be tied down to one job, work for forty years and find myself old and depressed wondering what happened to my life. Having a stable income from earning interest on my savings would give me some room to choose what I want to do, rather than being forced to stay on something I do not like.

My money goes to bills and food. I will first use it for what I need. The rest I usually just put into my bank account for later/emergency use.
I don't really have stories to tell about money. It's just there.

When I was a student, I was pretty careful not to spend too much. Now that I work, I still enjoy buying food items on sale and cook on most weekends because its cheaper and healthier. However, I like to travel to different places so I spend a portion of my money on that.
majority of my money goes to bills, rent, and mortgage for my parents house in PA x.x i do pretty well... so i get to save a little anyway... the only time i spend money is birthdays or food shopping~

My classmates said that I'm the best money-saver.
I know how to save money, and I can proudly say I'm doing the best job of it.
It's not I'm starving myself to death so I can save. When it comes to food, I just hack them from my house so I won't spend money whenever I go out.
Somehow, bieng thrifty is a virtue for me.
I have a target amount of money every month, and whenever I feel like buying something I really want, I try hard to save for it.
What do I do with my savings?
Of course, buy my whimsical anime cravings, like DVDs and other merchandise. I can't still make myself urge my parents to buy me those things. They'll only frown at me.
But here's a fact: I can't take it if my 'wallet' doesn't have any money in it, so I make sure it always have something in it, even if it's just lowest amount of coin. There's actually a belief (of my mother) that one shouldn't empty his wallet, or it won't be full again. Something like that.

I would like to quote one of my favorite bands Pink Floyd on the Subject on money
"Money, get away.
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay.
Money, its a gas.
Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash.
New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think Ill buy me a football team.
Money, get back.
Im all right jack keep your hands off of my stack.
Money, its a hit.
Dont give me that do goody good bullshit.
Im in the high-fidelity first class traveling set
And I think I need a lear jet.
Money, its a crime.
Share it fairly but dont take a slice of my pie.
Money, so they say
Is the root of all evil today.
But if you ask for a raise its no surprise that they're
Giving none away."

I think that says it all

From browsing the thread I see a lot of folks are starting to save money at an early age, which is a great idea when economies are going weirdo by the second (especially in the US where Social Security is probably going to be dead before we are). Smart BA folks! :)
I'd like to make two critical points about saving for retirement (which is best begun right out of college!) - you must invest your money in something other than an ordinary savings account, and it must be as early as possible. I'm taking a course on personal financial literacy at my university right now, and there was an example that showed how saving the same amount of money, but just 10 years earlier, resulted in something like US $200,000 more upon retirement.
The point about investing for retirement in something other than a savings account was that whatever you put your money in must beat inflation, which steadily increases year by year and will eat away at the value of your money even if you're spending it prudently. Savings accounts by far don't give enough interest to beat inflation, and CDs (certificates of deposit) are only slightly better, so it's in everyone's interest to select something like bonds or mutual funds (managed groups of stocks) to put your money away in.
The best performance (and highest risk) comes from stocks - and the best way to make money in them is to invest and then *don't touch them* for a couple years. If they're good stocks, they'll give you a few multiples of your original investment over time - so resist the urge to sell 'em tomorrow. :)
moonflowers- yeah, ive heard the same thing, its very convincing to amke me want to invest earlier
I have no problem saving my money, but im not going to save it just to save it
It might sound bad or even childish, but money is worthless if it isn't spent
I make sure to spend only what i can spare, and make sure that i have enough of a savings in case i should ever need it
Another random point, especially with the US economy right now, spending has become very important. the economoy needs to be stimulated somehow xD
