recently started the anime...don't really like it. it had so much hype so i was VERY dissapointed.

although i LOVE(ed...:cry...) 'shishio gen' so that's enough for me to join.

he was so great.

i started the manga now though so i'm on the same part as the anime. i'll try read what what happens soon.

I love Shishio too and was very dissappointed that the mangaka decided to "take him out" I started off with the mangas (rite now until Vol.16) 3 years ago and just loved how the story develops~ The anime for me is okay but the OSTs, animation quality...love it!!!

The only pairing that I could see is YOSHITOKI! Although I can't help but think Yoshi's grandpa looks as if he used to have a crush on Tokine's grandma. Or perhaps it's just me being delusional. :D

To be honest, I haven't; I'm scared to take a look. *gasp* But which chapter was it that contains the fangirl scream scene? I'll take a look at that and that's it. I have a thing not too look at RAWs. xDD;

I know! I thought I was being delusional, but Aihi's hairstyle really does look like Rukia's. Fav villain, I love Kaguro for his eccentric qualitites, and Aihi comes in second behind him. :D

I haven't seen the anime yet, although I know it's on air over at our place on NTV7. Do you know the schedule airtime for it? I think it's on Saturdays at 10AM? I just noticed it last week in the newspaper. Due to having Astro, I rarely ever watch the normal television channels anymore. :cry

@Coo: As a manga reader, I'm kinda dissappointed with the dubbed ones on NTV7 because many times they misinterpret the dialogues!!!! +____+ :yell and....Tokine's VA is so put off >___>;; LOL sorry for being fussy but as a fan, little things like this really concerned me :p The theme songs are okay but background musics (BGM) as in the soundtrack was awesome!!! Love it!!!! :nuts You can catch the series every Saturday, 10a.m. I'm following RAW versions; rite now at episode 47 (going to watch 48, 49 and 50 after this LOL :wtf), subbed until ep.43 :D

@kaya: I get the scanlations at stoptazmo and Franky House. But the latest scanlation FH has is until chapter 132 (vol.14). I also get the RAWs at www.urakai.com XDDDDDDDDDDD They have it until vol.16 and few from vol.17...omg, speaking of vol.16, you will definitely LOVE it!!!!! XDDDDDDDDDDD :crazy

I know! Let's talk about Yoshi's favourite drink! Coffee milk. Do any of you guys actually drink that? I don't like coffee much, I have this biased opinion of it being the choice of drink for older people. I don't know where that theory came from, God, I am so biased it's evil! Kekkashi anime does seem to be not very popular in Japan, but the manga seems to do better.
The current hottest manga in Japan are Magister Negi Magi(same magazine with Kekkaishi) and Nodame Cantabile. Those two are really very good and so much better than the current Bleach.

Hm... Maybe I have overlooked myself too cos I am still not very updated with Kekkaishi, unlike Bleach so I need some time~:D

Hm, I am not very fond of coffee milk but I love coffee. But I am more of a TEA than COFFEE person. I can't take milk well as some flavor or brand of milk would make me have a stomachache... :yell
I do think coffee is an adult drink as people usually drink it to keep them awake. And it has just a smell and taste that don't appeal to children. Children loves sweet stuff while Coffee is bitter. Although it is unhealthy to drink too much as caffeine,which are in both coffee and tea, is not good for health.
I thought it is pretty funny that Yoshi can still feel sleepy and sleep all the time even after drinking packets of coffee milk. Maybe the coffee milk is to show that Yoshi is mature?

I know. It's somewhat freaky. I really can't wait to see Yoshi undergo puberty and get tall though, then Tokine won't be able to complain anymore. And the time when Yoshi is actually way more effective in being a Kekkaishi is definitely the time I am looking forward to. :D

As for Kekkaishi not being popular in Japan, I don't quite think that's the case. It's popular enough to be animated from a manga series ( and popularity does count for a series to be animated ), so I guess it all depends on the rating. For instance, let's take Naruto. That series have taken fans worldwide by storm. If you go around in other forums besides BA, like Gaiaonline for example; you will see a lot of people saying that Naruto is OVERRATED because of it's humongous popularity. It even ranks 1st in onemanga.com, so I think it depends on the rating. So, it's really not because that Kekkaishi isn't popular in my opinion. :)

PS. Is that a good thing to talk like Shinpachi?

@ ruukii : Of course, they are the main characters, after all. Naruto is famous because for all we know a vast amount of people love ninjas and pirates. Mainly the two. If you look around, a lot of people have fixations for ninjas and the like. That's a plus for Naruto as it's all about ninjas. Although I couldn't agree more that sometimes it could get boring, like Bleach. @ w @ ;;

I'm hoping that Tanabe sensei will stick to his style though, that is not to lengthen any of the fighting scenes unnecessarily without the aftermath of the fighting contributing to the development of the characters. So far, I found the fights in Kekkaishi interesting, as each time, we are told more about the land Karasumori; and that accomplishes something. At least the knowledge for readers on the land will increase and we will have better understanding of the story as a whole. Karasumori is basically the base for Kekkaishi. *nods*

And I can't find any YoshiToki fan arts on google! Where oh where have they gone hiding?! :yell:yell:yell

And yes, it need to have some popularity for your work to be adapted into anime and live action show so Kekkashi has reputation. However, I wouldn't compare Kekkashi in the same level Bleach and Naruto has gained even though Kekkashi has won the manga award. Kekkashi has still a way to go before reaching up to their level. It just miss the X-factor and one thing I see it's missing is the appeal of the characters to mass audiences.

I also enjoy Kekkashi's fights very much, unlike Bleach now, which made me feel they are some mindless fighting machine. They fight, for the sake of continuation of story.
For Kekkashi, every fight seems to reveal something more, and especially about Karasumori. The battles enhance and enrich the plot.

And yes,ruukii, I do see Kekkaishi revolves around Yoshi and Tokine as well. If someone read Kekkashi and still not convinced of YoshiToki, this person must be sleeping or is reading another totally different work.

By the way, CooWings, Tanabe sensei is a "she". :che

Now do you see the reason why the romance implies so strongly in Kekkashi? :)

Kekkaishi characters are plain, but I do not mean boring, for they have great personalities. Even Kaguro appeals to me, and he's supposed to be the 'Black' one. I feel that Tanabe sensei uses the same formula as Miyazaki sensei, that is; overly cute or overly handsome characters are not necessary to make a story great; but rather, the plot and the idea of the story itself that will promise one to be remembered.

CooWings, it's alright.
I have been supporting Kekkashi since its debut in 2003, and all along since, I have been think that Tanabe sensei is man. Until last year when Kekkashi won the award, then I realise Tanabe sensei is actually a girl... :yell
and this made me love Kekkashi more.

I love female artists drawing shounen.
Not too sappy feeling, action-packed but the romance is still strongly there. A hybrid of shounen and shoujo, I have to say about female shounen artists.

I agree with you that Tanabe sensei uses the same formula as Miyazaki sensei and this is what that attracts me to Kekkashi. Sometimes, I do prefer a work to be more plot-driven than character-driven, but the con is definitely that you won't get attached to the characters.
And this is why Bleach is so successful and the reason why so many fans are still willing to stick to it. Characters is definitely Kubo's greatest strength. Never ever I have read a manga and get so so so attached to so many characters at once. In fact, I am kinda shocked at myself that I am still rooting for Bleach now cos this kind of plot is surely to drive me away for other works, but just not Bleach. So yah, I am being generous to Bleach.

I'm certain Kekkashi can achieve what Bleach has today, but it takes time, and experiences for Tanabe sensei. And I believe Kekkashi will be more plot-driven and choose a different path that Bleach has chosen, and this can be her greatest strength. Bleach, plot-wise, actually has always being very simple and straight-forward.

Likewise. The romance element is brought beautifully, nothing over the top; but definitely strong and clear enough to suggest that some romance is definitely going on. Which reminds me of Gensomaden Saiyuki. Romance isn't the main element in it; but there are romance hints along the series. Minekura sensei is very good at portraying how deep the love is between the involved characters; without the need to push the romance overboard. Another great series.

Yes, she does use the same formula. I agree with your point on the con as well. Bleach had made a huge impact on me. Kubo's greatness really shows through his characters, and I can't help but to praise his sense of style and fashion in clothing. I will never stop being a fan of Bleach, that I am entirely sure of.

Kekkaishi will become huge too, one day. I'm sure at the rate Tanabe sensei is going, Kekkaishi will soon appeal mass attention. WE BELIEVE YOU, TANABE! I'd vote for Tokine anytime if there was a popularity poll of Kekkaishi too!

Ooh!! About the names, it's common for traditional Japanese family they will inherit same kanji/pronounciation in their names:

Sumimura's family: Shigemori (Shige-jii)-->Masamori, Yoshimori, Toshimori.

*Yoshi's mom, Sumiko is exceptional because she is Shigemori's only child and 'Mori' always carried in male names. Yoshimori's dad, Shuuji is married into Sumimura's family so the reason why their family carries Sumimura's name.

And the same pattern goes for
Yukimura's family: Tokiko (Toki-baa)-->Tokio (Tokine's dad)-->Tokine

Finally kekkaishi fc :wtf I was planning to open a yoshitoki fc way back but the laziness got in my way as usual :D

And I was depressed for about more than week when I heard that the anime will stop in ep 52 T^T that always happens to my favorite animes ><

I read the manga to the latest release by jojo till ch 200 AND I wanna know what they're talking about wish if I understand Japanese .. KAYA please when you have some time give us some summary for recent chapters, it doe not have to be in details pleassssssse :wtf

In the recent chapters, it seems youshimori and tokine are fighting that weird guy with his umbrella..after the fight is ended, one guy of the Yagyou I think said something to tokine and yoshimori seemed worried about her, what they were talking about? I wanna know T^T

I discovered kekkaishi first through the anime 2006 (it's such a pity that I didn't heard about the manga till the anime has produced ><) coz I'm more an anime fan I suppose, even though the art is more better in the manga, I prefer the anime because I enjoy seeing the action being animated and the OST is love :love the anime really did a great job, so sad it ended T^T

I like yoshi ji and tokine ba as well, I like their interaction, they're so funny XD I think yoshi ji still has some feeling toward tokiko, it's written all over his face XD

Alright, for the discussion. What or who led you to read Kekkaishi? Did a friend of yours mentioned it to you, or you just happen to come across it? And what is it that keeps your interest in this series? These are just a general question for starters. We could start on the more in-depth ones once this FC's pace picks-up again.

LOL I'm not good at babbling so I want to apologize earlier if my post is too short for a discussion *hides from flying potatoes*

I was introduced to Kekkaishi somewhere at the end of 2005 when I came to my friend's room and she got copies of manga compilation (like Shounen Jump). At first, I was not in a mood of reading, just flipped thru until I saw Kekkaishi artworks; the drawings are too cute and nice to be a shounen type and it sparked an interest in me to read it. Since after that, I begin to hunt her and start borrowing her mangas just to read Kekkaishi only LOL. What makes me loves Kekkaishi so much is how the story and plot; very simple but constantly interesting that makes me eager to know what happen in the next chapter and so on. The characters presentation are solid; through drawing it shows their personalities, how the characterization develops in each chapter and the relationship each of the characters. Even though not as powerful as Bleach, Naruto (just naming few well-known shounen mangas around) through awesome fightings, Kekkaishi has something that keeps it alive and special in its own way. Romance? That is very obvious in Kekkaishi, an attraction to the readers and of course the humour in it; world without humour is so dull :3

Alright, seeing as the leader have already posted her answer, I'll post mine. How did my journey in Kekkaishi happen actually? I think it was sometime early in 2OO6, I'm not exactly sure. My older sister purchases a Jump-like manga magazine that's available over here monthly, named KREKO and it was there where I found Kekkaishi. I was always one who skim through the magazine the first time, and upon spotting Kekkaishi's neat and adorable art style; I just went 'screw skimming', I'M READING THIS NOW. Yeah. It might also actually be because I saw cute Yoshi's face that I'm compelled to read. :D

What I love and interests me in this series is its well-built plot and storyline, as well as the characters. The plot and storyline is great, in my opinion; and I love the character development, especially on Yoshimori's part. Now I haven't gone too deep into the series, because I normally don't look at RAWs, but I hope Tokine will have a development or two in the upcoming chapters as well. Not just that, the questions and the mysteries in Kekkaishi have been brought out really well, that I cannot help but wonder and anticipate eagerly just what is gonna happen next. Another fact that I love about Kekkaishi is that it uses the formula of 'You don't need super-handsome and super-hot characters to make a succesful series.' I always thought that such a formula is incredible, and by using it; one such series will HAVE to be more plot-driven than any other series in order to attract readers. Which Kekkaishi has successfully pulled off. Although its name is not as big as Bleach and Naruto yet, Kekkaishi is special. One thing for sure that I can say is, the fight scenes never bores me. There's always something new spilled out in all of the fighting, and that fact makes such scenes essential ( not just merely added in ) in the series. Kekkaishi just don't do with meaningless fights. And of course, there's that OBVIOUS romance factor too! *squeal*

And that's it. I shall stop babbling nonsensical things now. :D

@Coo: You got most part that I left unsaid!!! XDDDDDDDDDDD It's good to read long entries and I don't mind how long you brag about it. Unlike me, online or offline, I'm still the quiet and passive person LOL *squishes* Yeah, I agree that Kekkaishi don't need super bishie to attract readers because at the end of the day, it will come back to the main storyline. Just look at Bleach >__>;; heck, I love Bleach!!! Bleach is phenomenon to me >__< I've never been so into a manga after I found Bleach. SS is the best arc ever produced by Kubo-sensei, this is where Bleach at its peak but I think he lost his touch when he starts HM arc +___+ But for me, Kekkaishi is different. The story is not so grand ooh la la but how Tanabe-sensei constantly maintaining the flow makes Kekkaishi is one of the best manga. Coo, I kinda like Sen too hehehe...~

I see. I'm not actually that loud, but I am pretty much talkative since kindergarten.I think it runs in the family. My habit just got worse when I entered primary school, where I kept getting scolded by my teachers telling me to lower my volume down when talking because my voice is too loud! Oh! Yes, indeed. I agree. Kekkaishi will always come back to its main plot without straying too far from it.

Off-topic, but yes, I LOVE BLEACH as well! Like, megatons love! XDDD It's the same for me here. Bleach is truly a phenomenon, despite it going downhill at the moment with the HM arc. Frankly speaking, it's NOT that its a badly written arc, because logically; there'll be a period where the characters will lose their prime, and this being one of those arcs. You can't be 'DA BOMB' all the time 24/7 now, can you? But I'm really glad with the latest chapter, for Kubo had finally chosen to highlight Orihime's powers, even just through a few panels, he wrote that her powers HAVE indeed, grown. :)

Very true indeed. Kekkaishi isn't as grand, but it is undoubtedly consistent. It's not easy to keep a story at a consistent pace, you see. It reminds me greatly of Eyeshield 21 regarding its consistency. That is another epic series.

I can't say Orihime's name back in the IchiRuki FC, so I mentioned it here. For some reason, I think our FC is very lenient. Like, we can talk about other series as well. Which is handy when used as a reference. I will remember not to abuse that leniency though. But, please slap me if I ever do. :D

AND YES, I LIKE SEN'S MESSY HAIR. *hides from flying oranges*

@Coo: Hm...maybe I'm putting too high expectation on Bleach and "I'm just a Kubo-sensei's work fanatic and I don't want to be dissappointed!!!" *got slapped on the head* ahem...I agree from what you said, it's not easy to maintain the consistency and the reason Kekkaishi has my love :D
I'm okay if we want to use other mangaka's work for comparison or example as long as we don't go over board :p I can be a forgetful elephant at some times too so do please kick me in the shin if I have gone too much >.<
I'm imagining too much because I think Shige-jii a bit looks like Gen and Toki-baa looks like Atora XDDDDDD

Ok, back to our discussion. I just loved how Tanabe-sensei's artwork is improving so much X3~ Yoshimori looks more mature and Tokine looks prettier. The latest chapter I'm seeing now (at jojohot but too bad I cannot read Chinese) is 201. At current story, Yoshimori already 3rd year in his middle high.

I discovered it first through the anime list of 2006, when I saw the cover art of its anime strangely it attracted me to it.. I couldn't wait for the sub so I watched ep 1-2 raw XD then around ep 15 (not sure) I started read the raw manga out of curiosity ^^ and I became an addicted fan to it now :p

The plot and the main characters (yoshitoki) what makes me so interested to keep in touch with it strongly.. these two factors are so important to me to keep my interest on an anime or manga that I read or watch.. if the the plot is not that interesting but the main characters are amazing, I'll watch it for the sake of them..if the characters are boring but the story is so awesome, I'll watch it for its plot ^^ and since kekkaishi has the two factors, I can't ask for more XD it has everything :love

I would say the anime is good too; characters moving :p and of course, for certain scene that is much better when it is animated e.g ep7. i cried a lot when i watched it :cry Plus, the OST is the best I've heard until now XDDDDDDDDDD Tho, sometimes I'm a bit dissappointed too during Kokubourou arc, Tokine shouldn't be in the Kokubourou but the animation team decided to involve Tokine too. As the result, the slap scene is less intense than in the manga >.<

I actually answer on it before in my previous posts! :nuts I don't think I wouldn't add more this question, "what is it that keeps your interest in this series?" but I can expand more on how I get into Kekkashi.

I have a very special feeling for Kekkashi like no other works can give to me. I guess it's because I have being a fan of Kekkashi and Tanabe sensei since it debuts in 2003. Then slowly, I witness it becoming well-liked, and then famous and even made into an anime. It's like a parent watching your child growing up and make you proud of it.
I was introduced to this work by one of my best friend in my secondary school. I formed an unofficial comic club in school at that time, and gathered avid otaku to geek and fangirl on comics, and later, I trained them to draw and we did doujinshi together. She was in that club and is my vice-president, and of course, we recommend comics to each other. I borrowed my Bleach (yeah, I read Bleach in 2003 as well,and that time, Bleach is in SS arc and it's getting popular. Bleach's popularity exploded in my country in 2005.)to her,and in return,she shared Kekkashi.

So that's how I know Kekkaishi. I have to admit my friend is more devoted to Kekkaishi than me,like I'm more hard-core on Bleach than her. :che

It sounds very boyish, unlike most voices of other main characters ( especially little boys ) that sounds more like a girl's voice. ( I know most hero character uses female voice like Naruto ) So, yeah. I also looove Madarao's voice. :nuts

Haha, it's translations. Not scanlations. I have no time to do typesetting and clean-up on the same time unless I want to form a scanlation team all by myself. HAHAHA. :yell

Well, it is UNOFFICIAL after all, so it's not acknowledged by the school but we have a reputation as we actually published our doujinshi out as a newsletter and we do lots of graphic works. Even though we're famous, the school still won't make us official as they don't seem the purpose of a manga/anime club. :yell
Manga is now a mainstream and it's going to be considered as an art!

＊妖 is usually pronounced as ヨウor あや・しい.
Eg.
• 妖怪(ようかい)=ghost/ demon/ apparition/goblin
• 妖しい(あやしい)= suspicious/ominous/bewitch[It’s more of a negative adjective]
However, Tanebe sensei specially put furigana, so I stick to Ayakashi, which means demons/monsters.

Haha, yay! Thanks for putting the link on the first page too, ruukii! I sort of went YoshiToki crazy for a bit there. And I am so excited about the latest chapter released by Franky House. Yoshimori's powers are very interesting, and Masamori admitted that Yoshimori is really the one blessed with power.

Though it seems like Yoshimori sort of loses it whenever he harbors too much power within him.

Okay, so. everybody. Second discussion! Topic 2 : Anything you're particularly impatient to witnessing in Kekkaishi? This can range from character relationships, character growth, and even Karasumori's own mysteries. ( answers aside from YoshiToki happening would be much loved, but you can still include said element if you so wish )

I'll give way to other people to answer first. So gogogo! :yell

there are soooooooo many things that I want to see in future chapters; YoshiToki of course in the list :love but what I really want to see:

1) Sumimura Sumiko a.k.a Yoshimori's mum. From the beginning of the story, we were told that Yoshi's mum, a Kekkaishi is on her duty at somewhere else. We never knew how vital her role in this series; we did guess it during early chapters where Tanabe-sensei never shows Sumiko's face, until in recent chapter she suddenly appears with an awesome entrance scene :eek: for me, she is very mysterious and definitely, future chapters with her gonna be a kick butt arc :fangirl

2) Yoshimori powering-up. We have seen Yoshi's power increasing; he himself noticed and witnessed (Hattori sees that too) how Karasumori's power combining power with him without him knows how but what makes me really wonder and worried at the same time will he fall to the dark side (referring to the RAW chapters that I have read)?

3) Masamori's true side. What is he planning? Is he really against Yoshimori as a legitimate successor?

4) Shigemori & Tokiko: unrequited love story unfold. It is not that important but somehow I really want to know about their past :yell I had a feeling that the same thing happened between Sumiko and Tokio.

5) Sumimura Shuuji: Who is he? What is his connection with Matsudo Heisuke?

these are all I can think of at the moment :headscratch btw, I made a Kekkaishi fanart but with many errors in design :cry I'm planning to do more Kekkaishi after this XDDDDD
