Well since nobody is discussing I will go first. I'm mainly a fan of death and black metal and some of my favorite bands are 1349, Behemoth, Vital Remains, In Flames, Soilwork, Decapitated, Wintersun, and Vehemence. I love the great drum work you get with black and death, I also love the vocals of a lot of black metal singers and the emotions they bring out. Overall black and death metal tends to have a more aggressive sound that I like. I do like some metalcore but its more of a hit or miss with bands for me you can't count on the same aggressive sound as you can with death and black.

I saw Slayer live once, they were amazing.
I haven't gotten into Hatebreed, I haven't cared for their lyrics too much. But I know plenty of people who like them.

i'm mostly into swedish, finnish, norwegian metal and wow i`d never thought anyone in this forum likes wintersun! there isn`t a day that i don`t listen to at least one their tracks. Ensiferum`s first 2 album featured their lead singer and these CDs are unbelievable!
some comments on good bands already listed. these are my preferences, feel free to flame me lol:
arch enemy: i stopped listening to them adter wages of sin. seemed they are gettting too repetitive.
inflames: i stopped after clayman. reroute, soundtrack and clarity didn`t do much for me
on the other hand, dark tranquility is still pretty good despite using a lot of electronics
cradle of filth: also stopped after cruelty and the beast. they seemed to be less heavy
opeth: they also seem to get repetitive
the last maiden album was awesome, i hope the new metalllica will also be awesome.
other bands i like or used to like:
moonsorrow, therion, finntroll (hehe they are really fun to listen to), insomnium, windir, emperor, epica, the old theatre of tragedy, the old amorphis, carcass-heartwork, falkenbach, opera IX (black metal with a female vocalist!)
underrated new band to check out:
asmegin, folk-viking-black-death-epic metal, one of a kind band. amazing debut album.
and i have to check out apolaptica

I primarily like Prog and Symphonic. I'm more into the instrumental side of music in general, so you can probably understand why XD

Huge fan of the genre as long as I remember. :) Metal is the way of life. Not too big fan of the old metal ( except Metallica, they r0x) though.
it always fulls me with energy when I listen to it, and music is SO multi layered in instrumental as well as vocals and lyrics that you discover something new even when you listen to one song over and over again.
I'm in the same boat as you BioBomber, symphonic is definitely my favorite, hence why Within Temptation and Nightwish are my favorite bands! Overall, I really like North Europe bands like HIM or Sonata Arctica.
I also like Lacuna Coil, Blind Guardian, Slayer, Rammstein (instant classic), Iced Earth, Dark Moor ...
In Slovenia we traditionally host metal Camp every year, 1 week of camping, sex and pure metal.
Metal is along with neoclassical my favorite music genre.
I'm leaning towards Industrial and Progressive Metal bands.
My favourite bands so far:
Rammstein
Dream Theater
Muse
Oomph
Megaherz
Skillet
36 Crazyfists
Placebo
30 Seconds to Mars
My Chemical Romance

I'm still a crazy Therion fan though...They are symphonic metal aren't they?Gosh,I'm stupid..My favourite of them is Peter Hansson-pretty guitarist.Somebody likes them?
I adore Metallica and since there is a concert in Bulgaria soon I'm goin' to see theeeem *yay*..I love "Ain't my bitch","So what" and the classical "Nothing else matters" =)

I get spasms of joy whenever I hear Death Metal - any METALLIC song!!! OMG! I love the hatred, the pain and the joy! So much emotion obscured and revealed in a series of mind-twisting and ear-bleeding melodies meant only for those who are intelligent enough to decipher their message! Heck! I'm listening to System of a Down right now! And Death Note's opening theme really attracted me - go Nightmare and Maximum the Hormone. I love Metallica and so many more! Red and a Thousand Foot Krutch! Gah! I can go on all night!

Same taste here! My mom loathes me when I have my earphones on. Always near max volume and she could hear it from across the table whenever we eat together. And our dining table's really long and my mom and I sit on opposite ends! (I think she's sensitive with her ears) And my pals say I'm not a girl at all when it comes to my taste in music. My dad also complains. Says I'm too weird! I am weird! (at least I do good in school. not the punky, rebellious type. I'm just ME!):D

DEATH metal!!! Screamo's fine. I classify it as metal...

I'm more of a heavy/thrash/speed metal guy since that's what I grew up with. Developed my taste for Swedish and Florida Death Metal (Grave/Morbid Angel/Entombed/Carcass/Death) - in HS - ventured into Melodic Death, Avant Garde and Tech Death around College. Even if I'm not in a mood to listen to metal sometimes, I tend to listen to it because of the bands that I was in.
I tend to listen to metal/jazz/blues/classic hard rock those early years. Nowadays, I tend to really mix it up by including pop, classical and jpop/jrock so my percentage of listening to metal has probably been cut down to half.

I already gave most of the melodeath bands I'm into in the list. I'll probably add Disharmonia Mundi, Scar Symmetry, Arch Enemy, Omnium Gatherum, The Duskfall to name a few. Arcturus, later stages Burzum, Ulver, Ram-zet on the so called 'avant garde' set.
Metalcore or New Wave of American Heavy Metal had some decent stuff - the first Killswitch Engage album on Roadrunner, Unearth's The Oncoming Storm comes into mind.
