Main characters
The main protagonist, Edward ("Ed") Elric is the famous Fullmetal Alchemist, though Al is occasionally mistaken for him because of his armored body. He has a prosthetic automail arm and leg, is of short stature, and typically reacts in an exaggerated manner to any remarks about his height. He is known for being the youngest State Alchemist, gaining this title at the age of 12.
Alphonse Elric: Alphonse, often nicknamed "Al," is Fullmetal Alchemist's secondary protagonist; he is Edward's younger brother and the narrator of the series. For most of the series his soul is trapped in a large suit of armor, causing other characters throughout the series to confuse Al with the "Fullmetal" Alchemist. Alphonse is the calmer of the two, and can be seen as a foil to Edward's character.

:glompColonel Roy Mustang: Roy Mustang is known as the Flame Alchemist. His gloves are made of a special material called "ignition cloth," which allows him to create a spark by snapping his fingers. He then uses alchemy to change the oxygen density in the air with the help of transmutation circles on his gloves, causing a controlled explosion. He is Edward's direct superior officer in the military, but has his own goal, mainly to become the Führer, leader of the military.

Winry Rockbell: Winry is a mechanical expert who is a childhood friend of the Elrics. She, along with her grandmother Pinako, built Edward's automail, and she also helps maintain the automail when it gets broken. Her parents were called into service as doctors for the Ishbalan Civil War and were killed.

Lieutenant Riza Hawkeye: A hard-working member of the state military, and a loyal, capable aide to her superior officer, Roy Mustang. She is especially proficient in the use of firearms. While she may be level-headed, she sometimes uses her shooting skills in situations where they may not be entirely necessary.

Hi I'd like to join, this is one of my favourite manga.

I first watched the anime and thought it was good. Then I read the manga and saw how different (and awesome) it was. I love it, the comedy and drama tend to balance nicely.

I'm up to the same part as you alexie, I really am surprised at who Pride is! I was no way expecting that! I blame watching the anime and seeing him as a helpless boy. I've no idea how anyone could defeat this homunculi, he can be anywhere at once so long as there's a shadow. I never thought a little kid could be so creepy.

Actually it was the anime that got me looking for the manga. I liked the first episodes b/c it did cover the same story line as the manga. Of course when it started to stray is when I stopped watching it. Later, I went back to the anime just to see how many changes they did. It was a little bit confusing but I really liked that Roy and Riza ended up together, and it really depressed me that Ed and Al where separated :P. But then again Arakawa approved the ending so it was okay with me (I still prefer the manga).

I really liked when Riza got home, Roy called her to see if she was fine. Especially when she said that he had great timing. *squee* I know they have something going on ever since Riza's dad entrusted her to Roy. I'm really interested in the tattoo on her back and how that relates to Roy's fire alchemy.

I thought itwas so heart breaking when Riza just gave up, then when Roy appeared Al had to keep her back so she won't get in the way *squee for the love* I also like the part where Roy tells Riza she has to take care of his back= protect him IMO! Currently I have Vol. 8-Vol.13. I always told myself that when I found a good manga then I will buy all of if, so here I am with FMA and Vol.1 to Vol.19 of Bleach (I'm missing vol. 4 +5 but its almost complete).
The reason why I love FMA is that it has a mysterious not so mysterious anymore plot. Now that it's all coming into place I can't wait to see how everything gets resolved.I also like the one month waiting period b/c we get 45 pgs I usually get frustrated b/c after 19 pgs I want more.

@Alexie: Yes! ^___^ Royai is just so cute. I would buy all the FMA volumes, but lol, my budget has been cut. So I just collect Tsubasa and Bleach. I have all Bleach, thank god for the bookstore employee's liking Bleach. It's so weird, too. Because the bookstore that's pretty much one the only two bookstores where I live just started selling manga, and a lot of it.

Oh! Chapter 73 is coming out soon. YES. And we get to see what happens to Winry. o.O;

I go to Barns n' Nobles to get my manga fix, but recently there's another place so now I have 2. In both places you just ask and then they order the any Vol. I think it's b/c I'm special, you just have to make sure and get it. I'm broke too, I did all the buying when I was FT working. :( Now I just re-read and going to the internet to get my fix.

About the next ch:I don't think that Scar took Winry. Well, he took her but it's a plan to make it look like it happened in a forceful way. It's better if she goes with him, so that Kimbley won't be using her against Ed and Al. That's my take on it.:)

I love that Moment! Royai has got to be Canon, if it isn't then i don't know what it is! There is definatly something going on between these two! Their past is poof enough. I just finished reading that chapter...I like how there was a panel that showed Roy's concerned face. Risa can't risk saying anything. I also want to see some Roy and Risa action where she uses the emblem on her back.

That video is one of my favourites. I miss the old Greed as well but the new one is an interesting twist to the story and I love how FMA evolves, I never imagined we would be where we are from reading the first chapter. It's made such a progression. It's also good that the humunculi are different from the anime version. This one makes more sense in a way, using bodies of existing people instead of created.

Also I hated the movie, absolutely hated it. Maybe because there was no actual conclusion or it was too sad. I wanted a lot more from the movie more Envy action for a start and at least some couples paired off. I think the only good thing that came from it was the ova extras like the Chibi party and another one with Ed, Al and Winry as kids.

Yeah it's a little sad, there probably won't be another FMA anime. I do hope that someday there will be an OVA but the series is really long. It would take forever to make. (Sort of like what's happening to Hellsing Ultimate OVA)

That is whyI think that they made a deal with Scar to get Winry away. Also I don't think that Winry forgave Scar she just helped his arm like her parent's would have done, in other words b/c her parents where better ppl. She also said that she thinks he is a monster. If Scar kidnap Winry just to get away (a high possibility, even if I think other wise) then there is going to be some tension between them.:)

@Mz D: About Greed:The new Lin Greed is awesome especially since he has his Xing history and something something going on with LanFan. I really want to see more his history.:)

Kyaa! That's one of the reasons I love the manga over the anime, the different characters are so interesting.

Ling was a greedy guy to start with so it made sense he merged with the humunculi so well. It suited his character and was an awesome twist. I still think there's some of Ling Yao underneath the surface fighting for his wish of immortality.

What do people think of Sloth(manga)? I mean he's a big hulking battle tank of a humunculi but at the same time so cute! I don't know why I think that but I think he has a well suited personality. Better than the Sloth in the Anime anyway even if it was a good twist.

About Sloth: *also nods* I think it makes sence that the big bulky guy is sloth. I just finished reading the chapter, and I have to say that it almost answered all of my previous questions but just in order to give me new ones. Spoilers *if you don't want to know about ch.73 don't look*.....First, YEAH! I was right about Winry. Oh! and Ed is so :love with her. About Al: Yes, he's body wants him back, unfortunately he's in no position to do that. About the end: Someone that has seen the gate are the statue puppets(?) that DADDY mention,:headscratch right? I mean Izumi, Ed, and Al have that in common and I'm just asuming here that is the connection to Holeimhein. But I'm drawing a blank as to who might be the other since I remember Lust saying that Roy was a sacrifice (when she stabbed him). :confused: I think I'm getting ahead of myself. Agh! the posibilities! So, what do you guys think?

It was awesome. I especially enjoyed reading the part where Mustang and Hawkeye were having their conversation in the lunch table. At first I was a bit confused, but then I understood. They're pretty smart-- I mean, Hawkeye tapped the cup to tell him that she was going to give him important info, and he immediately understood, with the tap of his pen. It was wow. That was pretty cool. @___@ Yeah, I loved this chapter more than the last chapters of Bleach. :D

I think it's a very good speculation, MzD, since I was thinking the same thing when I was reading this one and the last chapter. Also, I do remember random people saying that they were very special and gifted with alchemy.

EDIT: I just remembered that Barry the Chopper's soul was also put in a metal armor, so I don't know about the blood thing anymore. There is also the thing about Barry's body was looking for it's soul which applies to Al's body calling his soul from the metal armor, so who knows. Althrough they are very talented.

I'm satisfied with how the anime series and movie ended, but I want to know the real story of the manga.

FMA is definitely one of the genius anime around, and I can relate since I've been surrounded by chemicals and equations for 3 years :D

@rei_ai: I ♥ the manga!!! IMO, I think it's better than the anime since it went more into Holenheim's (spelling?) past, which has another explaination that I thought was brilliant. :D So, yeah! You should try the manga. Oh, the only somewhat, might be, depending on your POV, "bad" thing is that new chapters come out once a month, BUT when it comes out, it's usually 30-40 pages long. :D

In Japan Riza's name ends with "Ai", 'Ai' Also mean's 'Love' so they add it to the end of Roy's name to make RoyAi which is an abbreviation of RoyXRiza ^^

I used to like the anime, but after I started reading the manga, not anymore.:headscratch The explanations in the anime are quite good and are making sense, but nevertheless, I always had the feeling that it's kind of fishy. It was okay, but it wasn't as great as the rest. :huhuh
The mangastoryline just fits better. Arakawa-sensei knows best what fits her manga and what not. :flirt The North Country-Arc was awesome and the whole thing around Hohenheim, I just love it! AND because the manga is longer than the anime, the characters have more chance to develop. It's so nice to see them growing, physically and mentally.

Let's make it simple: everything! :noes :noes :noes
But remember, I'm only talking about the manga, because actually I really dislike the way the anime ends.
So, let's talk about the awesome manga called FMa and what I (or we all) love about it. What I absolutely adore is the character development. Ed started as a wild, stubborn brat and now he's still stubborn but he's so much more mature than before. You can watch him growing more into an adult everytime you see him. He is on the edge of becomming an adult and this is shown. He even falls in love. First, we only had small indications, now (especially in the North Country-Arc) he literally shouts it out with his actions. But at the same time, Arakawa-Sensei reminds you every now and then that Ed is still partly a child. (He wasn't able to kill Kilblee when he had the chance to do so although he really had some hell of a reason to kill him)

Another positive quality of FMA is it's story. We all know it and we all love it, don't we? It starts so small: two boys who want to find the philosopher's stone, but now the whole matter is gigantic! :nuts Plot-twists hugh enough to let you get dizzy (XD) (eg: When Ed was nearly killed or when Scar gave little Mai the jar with Envy or when we learned about the first humunculus and "father".).

The next thing I love is the fact that there are some characters with hu~ge secrets. One of the most surprising characters is Hohenheim. I was so damn shocked when his secret was told! What they've made in the anime is nothing compared to the manga.

Next point: most of us were getting tired when there were these long fights in Bleach (Hueco Mundo), this will most likely not happen in FMA. All the fights were short, but just right. I think there's nothing you can complain about the fights. Everytime it's exiting to read a new fight. It's not the same shedule over and over again. Every fight is different and the chance that the "good guys" will loose are quite high in comparison to other shonen-manga. In addition to that there are no power-ups like in Bleach or DBZ or other power-shonen-series. The characters have to get strong in their own way and they have to train damn hard and they need their time to gain physical strengh.

-Ed still has a weird tastes; I'm glad that through all that he has gone through he is still the same Ed he was in the beginning.

The anime has a really interesting development and the movie is quite while-worthy to watch, but after a point it almost feels as though the manga is an entirely separate story so I think those of you who have yet to read anything from the manga should give it a thought because it really does own a lot more in various ways. :D

Nevertheless I just hated the end. *kicks Eds little butt for returning to Muinch* It was nice that Al followed him, but what's with his other friends? What's with WINRY! She was totally forgotten throughout the whole Animeseries and in the movie she was just there to give Ed his new Automail.

i loved the name talk, too. :p at first, i only knew that riza was trying to communicate it to him, but i couldn't figure how she'll do it (i thought her babbling was meant as a distraction). :oops at the rate she was going (and without preamble), it was amazing how roy got to memorize all those names, and in order, no less. :crazy

Just as I expected Ed really did hit his Dad hard next time he saw him. Also he was surprised about his Dad's secret but not as much as I thought he would be. :/ (Maybe he guessed something was up with his Dad seeing as the "father" of the humonculous looks exactly like his Dad. Bug clue there I suppose!)

Ed's got his red coat back, I hope people make icons of that scene, Ed with a flower growing out of his head while he talks about how cool the colour red is hilarious.

No the anime wasn't cancelled, it appeared way back when FMA manga wasn't close to being finished, so it did part of the manga story, and then went to a anime specific story. This happens in a lot of mangas where the manga is either monthly or bi-weekly, like Gantz, Ouran, Soul Eater (most likely), and many others.

The anime stuck with the manga's storyline for a little while but because the chapters are released monthly at best the anime started to have a need to create it's own storyline and thus the anime branched off and ended ages ago while the manga continued as it did.

There's a new anime tv series for FMA coming out soon and i can only hope that this is going to work like Hellsing Ultimate does.

It makes sense to start again, plus I'm such a big fan I don't care. If you think about how the anime changed the manga plot line there's no way they can jump in from how the anime finished and add the new chapters to the anime.

It's less confusing to just start from the beginning again. That way they can bring in the correct plot and hints for the bad guys. The hommuncilus are different in the manga, same too the story about Ed and Al's Dad.

I still think it's going to confuse the hell out of the anime only people but *shrug* I don't care I want to see the manga plot in anime form.

Good thing is there shouldn't be any filler episodes, they can go straight on till they reach Ling et al.

The reason was because the anime had caught up to the manga, so the writers considered making their own plot. The writer, Arakawa herself said she didn't mind. It turned out pretty well I think. I've got no objections to the anime, except the movie, but that's a different matter all together. >>

The line about Pride being a monster coming from Greed was pretty cool, IMO. :love

For a minute, I thought Al was really gone! Hearing him curse was pretty shocking for me. I really felt bad for him in this chapter.

Quite frankly, I wouldn't have let Al go through with that sort of plan either. It's hardwired into an older sibling's brain, or at least mine and his, to not want to let your younger siblings do something that would put them in that sort of danger. Even if they can be :zomg!annoying sometimes.

The way that Pride acted inside the shelter was pretty interesting. =O He really is pretty childlike. What would he do if Mrs. Bradley got harmed? I'm curious. How would he feel if he lived until she died of old age? As a homunculus or a child, how would he react?

It's chapters like this last one, that reminds you how freakin good FMA is. I mean the story just gets better and better. Really I've never seen a bad chapter in FMA, it's all relevant, it's always has a something that makes you anticipate the next chapter. It's a shame that FMA always seems to get forgotten when people talk about best shonen, because personally I have to say it has to be in everyone's top 3 or so.

I loved this last chapter, Mustang owning, Gen. Armstrong being badass, Ross and Havoc coming back, the whole rebel group just mopping up the central troops with ease, so cool.
