About Rurouni Kenshin:

Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story (るろうに剣心 明治剣客浪漫譚, Rurōni Kenshin Meiji Kenkaku Romantan) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Nobuhiro Watsuki with an anime adaptation. The fictional setting takes place during the early Meiji period in Japan. The story is about a fictional assassin named Himura Kenshin, formerly known as the "Hitokiri Battōsai" (人斬り抜刀斎, "Hitokiri Battōsai" or "Battosai the Manslayer" in the English dub). Kenshin later grieves for all the lives he has taken, and vows that he will never kill again.

The manga initially appeared in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump from September 2, 1994, to November 4, 1999. The complete work consists of 28 tankōbon volumes which have sold over 47 million copies in Japan as of 2007. The United States release of the manga has been completed by Viz Media. Rurouni Kenshin is subtitled "Wandering Samurai" in some English releases, as a rough translation of "Rurouni." The English-language versions of the OVAs as well the film is released as Samurai X, although the original title was included in the DVD releases. Writer Kaoru Shizuka has written an official Rurouni Kenshin novel titled Voyage to the Moon World. The novel has been translated by Viz and distributed in the United States and Canada.

He is the main protagonist for the series and has developed into a media franchise, which consists of a series of manga, anime, original video animations (OVAs), movies, soundtracks, video games, and other collectibles. When creating Kenshin, Watsuki designed him to be the physical opposite of Hiko Seijūrō, a character that appears in Watsuki's first one-shot manga, Crescent Moon in the Warring States, and later in Rurouni Kenshin as his swordsmanship teacher.

Set in a fictional version of Japan, during the pre-Meiji period, Kenshin is a former legendary assassin known as "Hitokiri Battōsai" (人斬り抜刀斎, "Hitokiri Battōsai"). At the end of the Bakumatsu, he becomes a wandering samurai, now wielding a sakabatō (逆刃刀, sakabatō lit. "reverse-blade sword"), a katana that has the cutting edge on the inwardly curved side of the sword, thus being incapable of killing. Kenshin wanders the countryside of Japan offering protection and aid to those in need, as atonement for the murders he once committed as an assassin. In Tokyo, he meets a young woman named Kamiya Kaoru, who invites him to live in her dojo despite learning about Kenshin's past. Throughout the series, Kenshin begins to establish lifelong relationships with many people, including ex-enemies, while dealing with his fair share of enemies, new and old. Through these encounters and relationships, Kenshin begins to find true atonement for his past enabling him to fully conquer his "Battōsai" nature. By the series end, he has found true peace and contentment as the husband of Kaoru and the father of their son, Himura Kenji.

Kenshin's character was well received by fans, with his holding the top spot in all reader popularity polls for the series. Critics of the series praised his personality, though some complained about his development during the anime OVA series, which differs from the manga. A variety of collectibles based around Kenshin have been created, including figurines, key chains, plushies, and replicas of his sakabatō sword.

Kaoru

In the story, Kaoru is the teacher from a kendo school from Tokyo called Kamiya Kasshin-Ryū. The school starts to lose all its students when a thief from the city starts killing a large number of people and claims to be the "Hitokiri Battōsai (斬り抜刀斎, "Hitokiri Battōsai) from the Kamiya Kasshin-Ryū". Kaoru encounters him but before being killed by him she is saved by the real Hitokiri Battōsai, now a wanderer, Himura Kenshin, to whom she offers to stay in her dojo as she notes Kenshin is a gentle person instead of a hitokiri. As the series continue, Kaoru develops strong romantic feelings for Kenshin, who is constantly haunted by the wrongs committed in his past, and believes he does not deserve happiness. Kaoru has also appeared in the featured movie of the series, as well as other media relating to the franchise, including a plethora of electronic games and a series of OVAs.

Sagara Sanosuke (相楽 左之助, Sagara Sanosuke), known as Sanosuke Sagara in the English-language dub and nicknamed Sano, is a fictional character from the Rurouni Kenshin universe created by Nobuhiro Watsuki as a main figure for the series and developed into a media franchise, which consists of a series of manga, anime, original video animations (OVAs), movies, soundtracks, video games, and other collectibles. Yahiko is an orphan from a samurai family and was forced to work as a thief to repay the debt that he had supposedly owed due to his parents death before they could pay it back. When he is rescued by the main character of the story Himura Kenshin and decides that he would grow up to be just like Kenshin but due to his strong beliefs in not teaching anyone else the sword style he had obtained, he enlisted Yahiko to be trained by Kamiya Kaoru, the teacher of the Kamiya Kasshin-Ryū. As the series progressess, Yahiko becomes skilled at the swordmanship and comes to face many opponents. Yahiko has also appeared in the featured movie of the series, as well as other media relating to the franchise, including a plethora of electronic games and an OVA series.

My favourite fight is the one with Kenshin vs Soujiro. If anyone remembers, it was the kid with superspeed. Dunno why, i think that it is a remarkable fight because it was very emotional.

Now, I remember Enichi is also my favourite :D Kenshin's fights with his sensei(I forget his name = =;; ) , Enichi, and that mummy guy are great imo. I can remember Kenshin said something like Enichi never learnt any techniques to defend, so that's why he lost to him. Meh.. I can't help feeling sorry for him 'cause he's spent his life grieving over the death of his only sister after he witnessed the incident. Well, those fights are what I can think of so far. I may add more later.

By the way, do you have any favourite pairings in RuroKen? Mine is SanosukexMegumi xD

SanoXMegumi made me roll on the floor every single time with their interactions! I wanted them to be canon, but sadly...

I dun have any favourite pairing actually, a weird thing that is. You see, what i mean is that i pretty much am ok with everybody with everybody. I think KenshinKaoru is lovely, but i prefer KenshinTomoe (because i'm a sucker for tragic love tales), YahikoTsubame, AoshiMisao, etc....

Joinage! RK was my first shonen back in the day when it was first out.

My favorite characters would be Sano, Aoshi (he intrigues me), Tomoe, and Sano's family (his little brother is so cute!). I always enjoyed the Sano and Saito interaction.

Favorite fight would probably be the second Aoshi and Kenshin fight just because it was so emotional, and the end in the manga was gorgeous. That spread of Aoshi and his trenchcoat after he took that last move (the ouji) was amazing.

I agree that Sano's family is just so adorable! I like his sister and brother, cracks me up that Sano was fawning over how his sister always rode on his back while she thought he had a crush on her.

One thing i love about Watsuki's characterization is that physically strong characters always have a weak emotional control, and yet the physically weak characters are always with huge emotional baggage.

RK is one of my earliest obsessions, along side Doraemon, Slam Dunk....but i should say that RK is the one that made me obsessed with Japanese anime fandom.

I never really cared for RK pairings except maybe KenshinTomoe just because of the change that occurred with both of them, and the circumstances were quite juicy. That OVA was also beautiful. I own both of them, but the second one is so angsty. It was suitable given the characters, but it was just too damn much.

it would be Saito, he and Kenshin had a rivalry for the longest time. he's also the only opponent who's never lost to him....although it all depends on how much of a villain you find him. he has some lawful qualities.

JOINJOINJOIN. Kenshin is one of my favourite mangas, it's only beaten by Slam Dunk but that's another story.

@Cerise: Yeah it's sad but that's also counting for nearly every manga author. You can't produce one number one hit after another. Toriyama couldn't to this, Kubo will never accomplish it (He couldn't even follow up with a worthy arc, so a series would be too much to ask) and Watsuki was also one of them :(

For me, it's not even comparable to other samurai-themed anime/manga that came after that, like Samurai Deeper Kyo. one thing i loved about ruroken, was that in the volumes, watsuki said what he liked and disliked about his story, and where he felt he needed work

i was suprisingly disappointed in the ruroken movies though

although, they weren't that bad, the plots and animation were wierd, and i hated the ending of "reflection"

Well some people think it was tuberculosis. But I have my own theory - Maybe it was because of the techinque he was using, the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu. That technique was passed on to him by his sensei Hiko Seijuro right? He's bigger compared to Kenshin's body size. So I'm thinking that maybe using the technique countless times took a toll on his body... that made him sick ;p

As you all already discussed, Reflection was by far the biggest crap since the invention of Golf. And since it's not cannon I don't give a shit about the reason of Ken-san's illness^^

But joke aside my favourite arc is the Kyoto arc because it's a nice All-star show of all Characters like Watsuki said. Jinchuu was also ok but some characters came short and didn't get a proper farewell fight (Saitou, Sanosuke...)

I dunno but through the whole story Aoshi was a needless Character for me. He was something like the bad guy fighting in the protagonist group, but we already had Saitou in this "Vegeta Role" how I want to call it. He had his awesome moment at the Oniwa Banshuu arc at the beginning but his Fall from "The Uberslayer" to "Buddha" himself was just pathetic.

The morale of the story: One bad guy on the good side is more than enough.

And it truely is somehow. He has just like Kurama from YYH a very huge similarity with a girl and the typical shonen features aren't always present. Infact only the Kyoto arc is built up like a Jump Manga, but the rest is just plain individuality.

You are not alone. I prefer the Battousai as well. For the same reasons that you pointed out. Battousai pwns all....way cooler than the Rurouni.

Totally agree. That was, for me at least, the only moment that i went...":eek: the hell?!?".. it was heartbreaking seeing kenshin fall on his knees and shed some tears. then the rest were kinda expected i.e. Kaoru doll, Kenshin in living hell, Kaoru kidnapped, Kenshin snapping out of it, Aoshi, being the prodigy he is, unlocking the un-death of Kaoru, etc.

About the topic on what had shocked you the most/what had you not expected at all.

1. I had never expected Kenshin to be a husband way before he met Kaoru. He's a nice dude, but him falling in love with Kaoru was kinda amateurish, and i thought she might be his first. But it made sense that he never doubted his feelings to Kaoru, because he already knew how to define his feelings based on his past experience.

that wasn't as good of writing, but shishio was still a great character

and that was bad because it was really one of the better anime adaptations

most adaptations now days dont look nearly as good, less detail i think :oops

More like they are cutting down on the expenses to make it better since you will not get enough revenue from adaptations nowadays. The net just made anime/manga more accessible and you have more choices to choose from.
