Wow! now that is how you do a first episode, the level of animation for this opener was amazing especially considering this not a OAV, I mean it looked almost movie quality, you just hope they did use up the entire budget for the first episode.

I don't know anything about the Macross franchise, but this first episode has hooked me for the forseeable future. I think what makes it so impressive is when you compare to the recent mech animes in Gundam, Dragonaut, and Code Geass, to me it looked better the CG, now this was just the first episode but the whole universe seems so much more detailed, the action is a lot faster paced. The concept is a lot better it seems as well, I like the move to much more simpler world, Man going against a seemingly superior force, a fight for survival. In short I want more, and I can wait for the next episode, even if I have to listen to more Engrish J-Pop songs.

Shinsen Subs had a sub out, that's what I used. go to Cyber12.com to go get it. I have no idea how the story will turn out, but the action is top notch, best mech action I have seen since, well ever, the graphics are really good.

I've watched Macross since the original, and I'm really liking this one. Macross II was crud, and Macross 7 freaked me out. I only really liked Macross Plus, and now, this one. XD (I never watched Macross Zero =/). I really like how they mix in some humour in this so it isn't 100% serious all the time.

I'm also loving all these covers of the original Lin Minmei songs (especially "Do You Remember Love", the ED song for the teaser). But of course the original songs are pretty good too!

I totally like Ranka better than Sheryl, though I guess I'm a little biased since I was initially turned off from Sheryl in Ep. 1.

BTW guys, it's been a while since the original Macross, and the others didn't really touch on it, but what exactly is 'deculture' and 'protoculture' anyway? =/ I know those are important themes, but I've always kinda shoved them to the side when I was watching before. XD I didn't care when I was younger, but now it's bugging me, not knowing. @_@

well the zentardi didnt had a culture in the first show, they were a clone race and the female's and male's were seperated into diffrent fleets, when they reached earth and were exposed to culture it put them into a state of shock. the first space war was won with a kiss, they were too shocked to react and the small allies fleet decimated the zentardi (notice that the zentardi and humans get along really fine and that is because they have the same culture, exactly the same, since the zentardi didnt had any culture and the humans were reduced to 100,000 people) basicly i noticed that in macross the theme is that music can beat alien menace, in macross 7 the music helped the aliens to find their own soul or something like that, thus removing the need to feed on ours.


that is why sheryl and singers are so looked up for, culture and the arts are really important in macross universe, sometimes even more then transforming mecha.

its not exactly 'soul' its more like life force or will to live, they had a name for it, with a good music the victims could have been cured from their coma like status. the aliens simply learned that with their own songs they can create their own life force just like humans can.

i think its quite clear that the vajra wants ranka and are drawn to her singing. or in another word, she should think twice if she wants to be a singer cuz it might kill everyone. also i wonder if this whole vajra thing is connected to the macross zero bird thing. they look similer, have the same organic feel, piloted by something else and the name nome repeat in both stories.

I love that show but animation and character designs are seriously inconsistent. The inconsistency bothers me more than the fact it can sometimes look subpar. Oh well, I love it for the characters anyway.

Hmm so its a Macross recurring theme haha:p. I wasn't going to watch Macross Frontier initially since I hadn't seen any of the previous ones but it appears you need much more background info compared with Gundam which starts over each time haha:p.

What is this de-culture term?

i guess it means 'the culture', everything that is culture and make you feel human or something, like a song or art.

in this world there is much to appriciate about culture, since it saved humanity and the zentardi at least twice since.


from what i learned about macross, this is what I think is relevent to understanding the story.


once there was a ancient race which was called protoculture, they made the zentardi as their soldiers.
they fought aliens who were called protodevil or something stupid like that. the original macross was a protodevil ship. (the protodevil are evil) it crushed into earth thousends of years after the war had ended and the protoculture were gone, leaving the zentardi to look for traitors and devils in space.

the zentardi came for the ship and that was space war. in the space war almost the entire human race got viporized by the zentardi. in the end the humans and the zentardi who allied with them won and they made a new govrement that decided to make sure that they will survive. to do that they make more and more fleets like macross F.

there was a conflict between the devils and macross fleet 7 but that irrelevent now(also won with a song)


the last bit of information is the bird human.


in macross zero, a prequal to the original show, we learn about a weird alien device that was kept underwater near a island on earth, a few years before the first space war.
in episode 10 of macross f the movie is a remake of macross zero.

the important things are: the bird man alien thing look similer to the vajra in the concept that its organic and overall design.
the girl, mao NOME who survived the ordeal seems to have a connection to ranka, and since she had the bird man blood in her we can assume that ranka might have it as well so expect her to take a VERY important role in the future.
sheryl last name is also nome so the same can be said about her, even a connection between them isnt that crazy (they do remind sara and mao nome from macross zero)

I understand the premise of Macross, the whole idea of the song beating the aliens and saving the day, but I guess because this is my first Macross it just seems so incredibly lame, especially since the show has such great action. The thing that makes it worse is that J-Pop is just not my cup of tea, so when I see huge enemies laying down their weapons because of a weak song, I put off by it, it's worse then seeing heroes win through the power of their Nakama or something like that.

Oh well, I guess I knew what I was getting into.

as for macross, in episode 7 they fought the vajra fleet and there was this part where sheryl song was heard at alto plane, my guess that the hearings were somekind of a device, either way once alto heard the song his effectivnes grew, instead of a resolve you got a song (which is outside of shonen formula, yay)

well, i was thinking about it and the Vajra might be creations by the faction of human-opposed Zentradi made to hunt down and destroy deculture.

so this episode of aggressive Zentradi would make sense. As would all the hints about the Vajra awakening/attacking when the singing starts.

i doubt that, they simply too advanced (their 1 hit KO on the damn cruisers) but there are thing that do support your theory a little.

the first encounter was with a science fleet.
they resemble the more ancient bird man which might be the source meterial to create the vajra.
the VF that weird guy use have a weird bio-organic cockpit, which remind me of something i saw for a sec in episode 3 and in macross zero at the bird man.

my guess is that we will finally meet the bird man and the protoculture info in this show.

I was sorta dissapointed with Ranka in this episode. She didn't mention anybody but Alto even once.... Oh well, Sheryl's my favorite anyway. No matter how many times I listen to Seikan Hikou, I instantly forget it--it's not as memorable as Don't Be Late. Personally, I don't understand how Ranka can be so popular after singing two songs. (Aimo and Seikan Hikou) Ranka's title of "Super Dimension Cinderella" is worrying also. I have heard of Ranka being described as the typical idol: very popular at first, but quickly fades and is forgotten.

so its seems that the galaxy fleet is trying to destroy the frontier fleet and they are using the vajra to do it.
make you wonder if the vajra even want to attack frontier, after all they are the one who are being invaded.

my theory.
the humans found the vajra who are a race of space bugs with emphatic abilities, they also have those purple crystals who help to make space travel easier.

in the process of the cruel experiments that were forced on them they started to be more violent, and eventually they developed the warrior caste (if there was always such a cast that develope with each weapon thrown at them dont you think they would have been invinciable by now? i think they are new)
the result was the destruction of the 117th fleet. ranka is a product of the research, and while she is only a human\sentardi hybrid she also have something in her, something connected to the vajra and the purple crystals.

in the various attacks on the vajra i could only feel like something is wrong, something was sad in the slaughter that followed ranka song.

in the episodes previews the narrator talks alot about the fear and hate the humans have towards the vajra, my theory is that those are signs for the reason they are so violant against humans.

now we also have Ai-kun, the little vajra larva ranka have, if you seen the latest episode you know that he is cute no matter what form he takes, i think this is because of the love ranka gave him.

this show wont end with the annhilation of the vajra but with them returning to their more pacifist nature before they met humanity, after all macross always had the massage of cooporation and not annihilation.


as for the galaxy fleet, they are playing both sides for some reason, they are the true enemies in the show.


also, since the show suppouse to finally explain the connection between this show and macross zero i came to the conclusion that the bird man were vajra, that nome family (i think sheryl recieved that name as a mimic to rankai true heritage, she is after all only a part of the ranka program) are connected to them via song (sara and the bird man, ranka and the vajra) and finally, the vajra are eitehr a product of protoculture or...the protoculture themselves, the oldest race and also the race that created the zentardi from ancient humans (why do you think they can breed?) and space travel with their crystals.

according to macross 7, the protoculture dissapeared because of the protodevils invasion (they are really bad in names...) so maybe that will explain the lack of vajra\birdman in hte galactic scene up till now, several years after the protodevils left our galaxy.
