I can only draw from artists I've come across but I'm talking about Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Eric Clapton, Eagles, Led Zeppelin, Bee Gees, Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd, The Who etc, well rock biased since its what I listen to, lots of other artists I've left out who aren't from the rock genre.

This compared with Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, 50 Cent, pop punk and electronic techno/dance.

Sure its all preference and opinion, absolutely. However if you look at the pure essence of music, the music itself and the meaning i.e. lyrics. It cannot be denied that old music is purer with their music and their lyrics were beautifully simple yet meaningful. The quality has long since dropped with a few exceptions, this is my opinion so an exception is for me and all you to decide but for me there are few.

Pop is just manufactured fake songs, half the people on the charts probably wouldn't be able to even write their own songs and if they did its not like it'd be any quality or substance to it.

Now lets see some examples.
"Gimme More"

[Spoken]
It's Britney Bitch
I see you,
And i just wanna dance with you

Everytime they turn the lights down
Just wanna go that extra mile for you
Public display of affection
Feels like no one else in the room (but you)

[Bridge:]
We can get down like there's no one around
We keep on rocking, we keep on rockin'
Cameras are flashing while we're dirty dancing
They keep watching, keep watchin'
Feels like the the crowd was saying

[Chorus:]
Gimme Gimme more
Gimme more
Gimme gimme more [x4]

The center of attention, even when we're up against the wall
You got me in a crazy position (uh huh)
If you're on a mission (ooh)
You got my permission oh

[Bridge]

[Chorus (x4)]

[Spoken]
I just can't control myself, more
They want more?
Well I'll give them more (ow!)

[Chorus (x4)]

Gimme more gimme more
Gimme more gimme more babe
I just want more

Gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme [x4]
Yes Britney would be the obvious choice to represent the modern era of music. Mostly superficial fake lyrics, just as fake as the people who sing them. This wouldn't have been around in the old days of the 50's-70's.

Now lets look at some old lyrics.

Imagine there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

You may say that I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
Imagine by John Lennon, its full of meaning and its so simple, absolutely timeless.

They just don't make stuff like this anymore.

I realise that this is a giant biased rant, argument I like to call it:p, about how old music is generally so much better than most music around nowadays. I'm sure the music purists will see some truth in all this.

Heh ... all too familiar sounding to me >.<!

Turned on radio to hear DJ blabbling about some new music that is gonna blow your mind away ... comes the instrumental part of the song ... I'm thinking hmmm .... nice beat, nice intro ... then comes the singing part, and my ears start to bleed >.<!

I actually don't mind the 'music' part, infact I find most songs of today usually have a very good background track and beat to them. Heck, I'd even say the artists themselves aren't half bad either. It's not like they cannot sing, most of them can. Britney Spears ... well, if you've heard her older stuff, she was actually quite pleasant to listen to back then. I don't think I can blame the artists ( be it the singers or the song writers themselves ), they are just giving what the public wants, and unfortunately what is crap to our ears is what 90% of people want to listen to these days. There is ofcourse Country Music, and few musicians who still stick to the good old days of lyrical music ... Michael Buble being one of them. It is unfortunate that because of the genre of music he is listed in, most people don't give artists like Buble half a chance :(

I am no music purist, but I do prefer music of olden days. I like my Sinatra and Elvis!!! I won't say music of modern days are all rubbish, because the times had changed, and music has changed. It all comes down to whether or not we want to accept the new ... just like how our grandparents would think The Beatles were crap to their ears back then ... and probably still think they're crap now :p

Well I like the music from Within Temptation, Nightwish & the like.
If we compare the larger main stream "band" that you mention to old school main stream... Yeah they are boring, extremly boring and rarely have much deept in it, it has gone to be all about looks or good bass for the main stream it seem.-_-

It depends what angle you take on this. Me being one of these people that is into both kinda of music really searches a lot before i actually decide on what music i like. I agree a lot of things these days are manufactured trash such as Britney herself but then you do get people who really try and write there own stuff.

Problem is this era with music is all wrong and i see it all the time and could run a music company better dumb, deaf and blind to be honest. They rush the artists to get their albums out, they just get people to write them songs and get a computer to do the rest of the work. Instead of letting them go off and spend a good few years to sit down and write something so amazing your just like can a person really write this.

Also now a days world issues and problems who the heck can be bothered to write about that really? No one i hear you cry? Like you have just compared between the two Britney and John Lennon. Britney wants the money fair and square end of. She will get a team to just make a load of crap for her and alter her voice. Shes been a bad mum and is in court for how many knows charges so the album is easy money for her.

John Lennon wanted world peace. Did he get it? Sadly not. Thats what his song was about. He didn't care that much for the money he cared about making the statement to the world about world peace and wondering what the world would end up like in the future and even campagined about.

More pressure from management is ruining music. It's a shame because we should have more songs like John Lennon but you have to look around in some hidden new music and you will find people who are really dedicated to what they do and there fans and such with money as the last issue and some songs with meaning. I mean its hard but you do.

Thats right. Its all manufactured garbage, not people writing songs for a purpose. Not everyone is like that but unfortunately now the percentage of people who would be is evil ><. All time lows and its only getting lower.

I know i just don't understand why people buy it either. It really enrages me. So glad am not blind to it. I buy peoples music who actually put effort into their music and been involved in the whole process themselves. I mean some of them have been told you music make this album now but I support them because i think its so unfair how they exploit them and make them bring out loads of singles and albums and such. Why i find looking for new music a bit difficult and now am going on the band wagon of staying to artists and bands i know will do good stuff and looking for older stuff. Doesn't mean i hate new music because a lot of artists and such are still bringing out new material.

I miss old school music, especially old school hip-hop and R&B. I was mostly raised on a steady diet of Al Green, Lionel Richie, the Four Tops, the Temptations, etc. I also really like the Sugarhill Gang, Afrika Bambaataa, even the one-hit wonder 90s R&B groups.

Rap music (as it's known nowadays) is just full of that bling, bitches and hoes, pimped out ride, getting high type of bullshit. I think mainstream hip hop nowadays has died a really tragic death!

I voted new school, but with that I DON'T mean Justin Timberlake/50 cent/elctro/dance etc.
I just happen to like music made in the past 10 years much more. It's not that I don't like old music, there's just no old song that really touches me the way a lot of more modern songs do. Because what I like most in music is if it can have an emotional effect on me... So. 'New school' music works better for me.
Like Evanescence <3.

okay bach behtoven and motzart my grandmother brought me to see orchestras play their songs and enjoy, and they touch me much mroe then some of the emotional crap songs that come out, them but that is old old school but as far as what i voted for i voted old school, Pink Floyd Led Zepplin Queen, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones Mo town. And the Heavy Metal today is just screaming your head off i mean a few bands are okay but Led Zeppelin was considered heavy metal, Black Sabbath was considered heavy metal, Metallica, for g-d's sake none of these bands are considered to be heavy metal anymore, by the youth of today none of these songs have subsistence to their songs any more.. "its hard to be a pimp", "you don't know what is like to be me" "we are so misunderstood" "super soak that hoe" its all manufactured garbage, Well there sort of like Nirvana i herd a kid say about Fallout Boy and many people say some of these emotional or emo (i guess its called) bands are like Nirvana  NO!! Nirvana had subsistence these bamds don't yeah i ranted sorry, you have right to your opinion i just don't see the bands from 1999 to now can seem appealing although i like Green Day but thats about it and they still are from 1996 but now there considered old school by some people

I do love the "Old School", as you call it. No one can make music like "The Who" or has such a special voice as Eric Clapton had. But there are also "new" musicians that still know how to write good songs. I for myself try to ignore the so calld "New-School" musicians. I rather listen to Song form "the Goo's" or "Need to breath" cause they still have those pure lyrics you are talking about.

Old School Music FTW, too many good bands and excellent music that won't come back. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Cream, Deep Purple, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Caifanes, Zurdok, Jumbo, Soda Stereo, Los Prisioneros, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, The Police, etc.

Though some recent music is good (Velvet Revolver, Audioslave, Franz Ferdinand), which means everything that is clever and not premanufactured pop crap will count at least, old music is way better for me. Some of today's rap (the majority) is very selfish and are refuting the orginal purpose of hip hop (bands like Grandmaster Flash, 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock, Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy...)

There are some newer bands who found success with decent lyrics and songs however the old school can't be beat for me ;)

Okay, while I love Old School... I still have faith in "New School" music. Who can deny the movement that was Nirvana? Everyone knows "Come As You Are" or "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Even newer school still has soul.

"Boston" - Augustana

In the light of the sun, is there anyone? Oh it has begun...
Oh dear you look so lost, eyes are red and tears are shed,
This world you must've crossed... you said...

You don't know me, you don't even care, oh yeah,
She said
You don't know me, and you don't wear my chains... oh yeah,

Essential yet appealed, carry all your thoughts across
An open field,
When flowers gaze at you... they're not the only ones who cry
When they see you
You said...

You don't know me, you don't even care, oh yeah,
She said
You don't know me, and you don't wear my chains... oh yeah,

She said I think I'll go to Boston...
I think I'll start a new life,
I think I'll start it over, where no one knows my name,
I'll get out of California, I'm tired of the weather,
I think I'll get a lover and fly em out to Spain...
I think I'll go to Boston,
I think that I'm just tired
I think I need a new town, to leave this all behind...
I think I need a sunrise, I'm tired of the sunset,
I hear it's nice in the Summer, some snow would be nice... oh yeah,

Boston... where no one knows my name... yeah
Where no one knows my name...
Where no one knows my name...
Yeah Boston...
Where no one knows my name.

A few others:
- "Wake Me Up When September Ends" - Green Day
- "Get to Me" - Train
- "Dosed" - Red Hot Chili Peppers
- "Hard To Concentrate" - Red Hot Chili Peppers (I would totally marry a guy that sang this song to me!)

It all depends on the band and genre, doesn't it?
Like if you consider new school to be artists like Britney Spears/50 Cent/ Katy Perry and the like, then Old School definetly comes off as being better. However, I classify New School as being any band formed after 1979, which includes bands like Dream Theater, Metric, Muse or Kings Of Leon, which I love.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Old School rock. (Braces for music purist attack) Yes, I know its 'Epic', but I do prefer new school to it, because I generally prefer their melodies and sound. I know that the Old School groups may have been more talented, but when it comes down to picking the next song on my Ipod, 9/10 times, it will be new school.
