View Full Version : Windows Vista

In the past, each new version of Windows are better than the last. Each new version had nifty little features and helpful changes that made it a better OS overall.

Then came Vista. I personally hate it. Luckily, my main computer is still running XP, but setting up my sister's computer with it was ... annoying. More than half of the programs she liked to run on my computer aren't accepted or run properly on Vista. It's extrememly difficult to navigate and sort files the way I want to, the way I sort them on XP. And it's annoying to no end to be constantly asked by the computer,

"(insert program name).exe is trying to execute.
* Cancel
* Allow"

But perhaps I haven't spent enough time with Vista. Perhaps there is a method hidden in its madness. Perhaps it really does run better than XP.

What do you guys think?

Thankfully, I haven't had any reason to get it, as of yet. I have nothing that requires it on my comp and don't think there will be anything for while that I will need it for.

I have heard of the problem of having to confrim for like everything from a couple of people. I'm not sure, I don't like judging something before I have tried it myself. I'm sure one day I will be forced to upgrade. I'm not looking forward to it. But for now XP is working just fine.

It's a new OS so of course not many programs are made to be compatible with it. I'd say give it a year or so (watch them come out with Vista v. 2.0 or something :D) before switching over. They'll probably come out with a tonne of patches as well to fix things. I'd rather get it when the OS has been fine tuned.

XP still works fine for the most part. :) Heck, my old computer still has Win98 on it. ^^

Well...at least it's not Windows ME, lmao.

They'll hopefully upgrade the softwares to make it more user friendly like Microsoft is supposed to be about.

I don't use it, my friend does and said it's fine but meh I always wait a while before upgrading.

I don't trust any new software. I might get Vista in a few years time, but for now, I've heard stories about how users with Vista cannot connect to internet service providers, or how my computer technician friend has a HDD full of anime that he can't watch because it (HDD? Anime?) somehow disagreed with Vista.

i've been using vista since the beta came out and i must say, there has never been any major problems. pretty much everything is plug and play for me.
thats on my laptop, but i'm using XP64 on my desktop since vista64 seems to disagree with my desktop X__X

I have it. I really like it. Yeah you have to conform a lot of things not everything. Its mainly when you open something not by clicking via vista for example instead of downloading a winrar folder if you want to open it say if your downloading a winrar of manga and you just press open instead of save it will asks you to make sure that you really do want to open it and not accidently press it. Its also asks when you download new files. I think the sortings fine. I find it difficult a bit with my laptop mouse but meh there not the best things ever laptop mice.

I like it though it all looks fresh and new. The gadgets are so useful though instead of having to write everything in word or have a few applications open at once in a small format. The gadgets do that.

It hardly ever errors and XP used to error for me ALL THE TIME. Drove me mad.

Its even faster starting and shutting down too.

I think the only odd thing was the internet at first but once it gets used to it then it loads acely. I think Vistas kind of this software where it has to get used to things before it can make sure its safe to use it. Its all about safe using imo.

The main thing i like about vista is it problem solving tools, if theres a prob it tells you and actually finds relevant downloads for you (beautiful) unlike xp which gave you some gibberish that was useless

Oh and yes the opening and closing works nicer too.

i did get 1 blue screen though, from limewire >.>

ahh yesh..the children diseases that comes with every new program/console etc. Once it has been upgraded to V 5.0 I think I will get it...or when my Laptop dies on me:D For now I am very good with xp and no need to do drastic things on my lappie for some newer OS...too dangerous imoXP

The general rule when wanting to use a new Microsoft OS...wait at least for the Service Pack 1 before using it on a daily basis.

Every new software has glitches, bugs and incompatibility issues...that goes twice when it comes to Microsoft OS.

Yeah i can't wait for SP1 of Vista. I will get it no matter cause i mean Vistas great and all its still got a few tweaks. I am not like complete hater though a lot fo the features on it are godly. And the whole search thign is 100% better than that find tool rubbish on XP gah Vista search FTW. Just the constant accepting of stuff and the fact is goes funny sometimes needs tweeking.

I've tried the Vista on my dad's laptop, and I don't like it much -yet. Still, I'm willing to wait for a while before I upgrade to Vista.

Oh I forgot, my laptop is dead, so maybe when I buy a new laptop, it will have Vista installed.

Mine actually wasn't Vistas problem it was the stupid driver that the idiots at the comany didn't indtall right. So anoying sometimes. I only don't like all the acceptance rubbish on it. If i didn't want it to run i wouldn't have openned it. Only problem i feel with Vista is that. The whole problem solving bit now is great i actually leads you tp the problem where as on XP it used to just tell you. And it always updates and never tells you with anoying symbols and stuff when its done it just gets on with it.

Actually Vista is much better than XP even now. You can use your video card and audio card in higher performances. Also, Windows Update has an ability to find useful upgrades for your audio/video drivers. So, you can listen to your music and watch your movies in better quality.
Another good point of Vista on videocard stuff is, Vista automatically recognizes your video card then changes your screen resolution to max.

All of the things I've written in this post were seen by myself =) I will continue posting here later lol

Not if you have ATI. This video card driver hates Vista atmo. Dont get it if you like ATI technology yet. I agree with the sound though its sweet. And i also like that function and it also tells you what is up with your computer.

I'm forced to use it because of a new computer...I think it kind of sucks that moving a song to my organized music folder goes like this
*go to my music folder*
Then I had to look around for where to make a new folder...
*Select new folder*
Access Denied: You need to confirm this operation

*Continue*
*renames folder Kanye West because I didn't have a folder for him*

*Cut song from original folder*
*Paste song in new folder*
Access Denied: You need to confirm this operation

Thats not an exaggeration either, I just went through it again step by step...I can turn it off but then people say it wont catch anything at all...Not to mention the fact that there aren't many upgrades for me to run a few of my favorite programs successfully..I just dont like how its put together...my XP ran like a dream this kind of feels like "Windows for Dummies" :(

I personally think that Vista is better than XP, Files can be properly organised, and I like some of the new features. The only thing I hate, which Tomodachi69 & Shadoblak have pointed out, is that it constantly needs confirmation!

Spinel Sun
10-03-2007, 04:45 PM
Well the one I use now doesn't requires confirm that much o.o maybe it has something to do with the settings lol. Btw, about the ATI tech stuff.. you may be right emoloz-san :) My video card is NVidia Geforce 7300 LE (512 MB memory- as 256 mb shared-)
Also when you install Vista to your PC, loading setup files to your PC takes less time than it does when you install XP

Of course I'm not saying that Vista doesn't have any bugs or system errors. I liked the boot system in XP CD. But in Vista DVD, you cannot format your PC or you cannot part your HDD with using it. Although in Vista, you can make a clean installation easier and faster then you do in XP. You don't have to waste your time in NTFS formatting like you do in XP.

My security works better in Vista. My antivirus program doesn't have problems with Vista system. Also now it works in peace with both of the anti-spy softwares in my PC now. I'm satisfied with Windows Firewall too =) it's way better than XP firewall. And I don't want to use other firewalls since they sometimes make strange movements :@

That's all I can write for now :) . I'll write more when other stuff come into my mind LoL. Btw, I'm using Home Premium one. And I used both Windows XP Professional and Home Eddition.

Yeah i am right believe me with the ATI thing i know so many people with this driver problem. Including myself but of late it doesn't seem to have done anything but my guesses have cursed it now. Yeah i have that am vouching for Ultimate when i know the tweeks and peeks are out of it.

Everything is easier with Vista especially finding stuff. XP i used to scream at the screen and now i can find stuff pretty easy.

Its all really easy and just runs smooth and loads a lot faster as well i find.

I agree with the security thing and thats because my PC as well has turned Vista because the poor old one decided it had basically had enough. And everything installed fine and all the virus and firewall programs work smoothly. The one on my laptops pretty ace as well it always tells you when it needs updating. Its sweet.

I love this update and problems solving thing as well with Vista as it tells you whats wrong so quickly and you can just fix it. Unlike XP where you ponder whats wrong and vouche a guess. Updates are great they just run in the background so you can be minding you own business and the have installed.

I like it just hope the few bugs with drivers and non responding programs tend to weezle there way out in the upcoming service packs so i can grab a copy and basically run and install.

Wow that explains why my audio card wasn't recognized :) I have an ATI audio card ^^ So, I have more system informations for Vista. I'm into informatincs thanks to my studies and I want to work in informatics area, so I'm trying to get as much informations as I can get. That was a good point and thanks for explaining it. I just thought that Vista recognizes only the video cards. So the assumption of me was wrong *blush* =)

Glad to see that we have some agrements on Vista =) and yeah I love the search function here =) much better than XP. Well, I haven't got any blue screens for my programs but my PC freezed like 7 times (3 while installing Vista, 4 after installing it). After I got all the necessary updates, the problem seems to be gone for good now. But still, that's a critical error :)

Well, I'M still satisfied with Vista. I'm just waiting for solutions to some small problems =)

LOL. Just ask me most stuff about PC's am like a complete Computer Junk box. Seriously i know so much junk its quiet bad. Yeah ATI and Vista seem to be comflicing and theres something up with the drivers at the moment which is just not clicking with Vista at all and it even says for Vista but i really sadly agree with what there saying cause its not working right at all. Might have to give them a good old contact and say what the score is to be honest.

Yeah its so much easier to find stuff i love it.

Really mine has been fine. Well i got my Laptop and the PC with Vista on it and it just went zoom and it was done. Mine has only blue screened of i take my net card out too quick :S. It's kinda strange. Mine tend to freezes on video stuff which am blaming ATI and the odd webpage goes a bit stupid but there you go thats normal.

Yeah theres only really the driver stuff that keeps erroring with me. Firefox was for a while but thats wormed its way out as well.

Same as soon as ATI gets there ass in gear and the serivce packs are out am onto it.

I'm liking Vista so far. It's worked quite well for me.

The one thing every single person in this thread (and anyone who installs Vista ever) should do is disable User Account Control (that annoying popup box that jumps up whenever you try to perform an action). I disabled it first thing and the experience has been very smooth since.

Control Panel -> User Accounts And Family Safety -> User Accounts -> Turn User Account Control On Or Off (off, obviously)

Ypur wrong their loadsa programs work on XP and Vista. I mean some firewalls and security is just updating because of stupid Bill Gates who kept it under wraps for too long. Am sure it will be completely sorted by the end of next year. I love Vista and have no problems with it. I mean sometimes it can be a little fiddly but its alright once you get used to it. I actually get anoyed with XP a lot more because Vista's got so many other eatures and tools and even more stuff in the control panel which makes life a tad easier.

I sadly don't think people are giving Vista enough chance. When i got my Laptop with it i though why on Earth have i got Vista and i tried it and hated it. It's okay. Nothing spectacular. But it is annoying when you're trying to run a program or delete a file and have to constantly be asked "blahblah is trying to execute. Allow it to run?" Not to mention that half the time if you install a new program you have to do it twice, since it won't install correctly the first time.

You took the words right out of my mouth :hug I was forced to use Vista because of the new laptop I got (a few months back). And I was happy to have it in the first place. I usually don't care if it is new or not- but I was happy because the new 'system' came with my laptop. There are good and bad things with it.

:)The GOOD about Vista::)

1) It has this cool feature that makes you look at all of the windows you have open. And it looks like this:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q103/kitty868theonly/Scrollthroughwindows.jpg
So, if you are the type of person that has 'ONE MILLION' windows/programs open- this little feature is GREAT for you.

2) On your desktop, it shows a sidebar called, "Windows Sidebar". YOU can edit or have whatever you want on the sidebar. It looks like this:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q103/kitty868theonly/Sidebar.jpg
As you can probably see, mine has the weather (in YOUR area/state), the date, preview of the news from MSN/Hotmail, and sticky notes. As you can see, this is VERY helpful to me since I like to be organized and I have so much work to do overall (who doesn't?). And you have the option to hide the sidebar too (just in case you don't like it). Oh yeah, and the reason why you see a red line there is because it gives away my location :p

3) If you have a drawing/writing pad that connects to your laptop/computer- using the Windows Journal (which is free and given to you when you get Vista), can be used to write/take notes. I have a writing/drawing pad and I take notes in this program (if my Microsoft OneNote doesn't work at the moment). It looks like this:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q103/kitty868theonly/WindowsJournal.jpg
Yeah, 'Hello' to all of you. And, it saves the notes for you (as long as you save it). So far, I haven't had a problem with it.

4) The search engine is very easy to get to- instead of searching all over for it. It is located at the 'Start' button (the windows flag/logo on the bottom left side corner). It looks like this:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q103/kitty868theonly/SearchEngine.jpg
As soon as you type the few letters in a word, it starts showing results before you even finish typing it. Good when you are in a hurry. As for that red line you see there---- it gave away my real name (first and last). :p

5) When you scroll over one of the windows that is minimized that is located on your start menu- it shows a mini window. It looks like this:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q103/kitty868theonly/MiniWindow.jpg
I like that little feature. Because you can do that WHILE A VIDEO is playing on YouTube or something. Just scroll over it, and you see it play in the mini window. :D

6) You can preview a document/program (or whatever iti is) on the 'sidebar' WITHOUT opening it yet! It looks like this:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q103/kitty868theonly/PreviewofWork.jpg
It does the same for videos! If you click on the video (NOT DOUBLE CLICK), a mini window player appears on the side and you click on the play button to play it! It looks like this:
http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q103/kitty868theonly/PreviewofVideo.jpg

COOL RIGHT!?

And that is all that I can think of about the good things about Vista (there are probably others- but I can't think of them at the moment)... As for the bad- I will quickly summarize WITHOUT providing pictures.

:(The BAD about Vista:(

1) Some programs CAN'T work on Vista properly yet. If you're the type of person that uses A LOT of programs (like you're some computer 'geek'), then I suggest you NOT to use Vista--- yet. Wait until at least an year passes before. However, if you're the regular user. Like you use it for internet purposes, listen & download music, to watch movies on it, Microsoft Programs to do your work, and BASIC programs--- then you SHOULD/COULD use Vista.

2) The 'firewall' given to you--- stinks!! Mine apparently works to a certain extent, but it blocks some things that I need/want. However, Vista does ask if you trust the program or not before it downloads or whatever the case may be. So, there is a solution- but it's annoying...

3) The new Internet Explorer and Firefox have a hard time working on Vista. For some reason, after you do a certain action, it closes ALL OF YOUR INTERNET WINDOWS AND RESTARTS THE INTERNET (mine does this). Accoridng to what I know, there is NO SOLUTION to it at the moment. But, I hope it gets fixed soon...

And that is all that I can think of about the bad things about Vista (there are probably others- but I can't think of them at the moment)... Hope this was/is helpful. :D

Ive never actually used it, but from what iver herd from EVERYONE i know, its shit, you need twice the system resources to run the same program and it just has too many un-needed shit in it, in there "quest" to make it fancy and shiny, theve made it 10 times harder to use, while stealing mac and lynix effects, making it there own, but again, screwing it up and making it take 3 times the memory and still not running aswell as mac and lynix made it.

Ill never go to vista, my brother went to it and it lasted about 5 mins before he down graded to XP again. I was helping a friend sort he comp out he just bought and when i reinstalled xp on it, it had problems with the mobo, and while looking online, hundereds of people had downgraded there Vista to XP because they couldnt stand it. My school is on XP still, for once, i have to admit they have a brain.

Especcially if your me and need alot of resources spare, u dont need vista, so dont get it, i need ram and processing/ GC power for gaming or video rendering, and vista just doesnt give me it, it takes it away instead. Sure XP could be better, but its far better than Vista in my opinion

Yeah they were getting sick of people nagging for the new version and were still getting that. People should quit nagging and wait for it to be done. Hate people nagging about Vista. Nothing works that a bit of a wrong statement because a lot of things do work. I agree its not the best thing that they could have ever made and has lumps and bumps in it. I kinda blame Xbox for becoming so popular because they've been working on that a lot and peoples greed for a new version. I don't mind Vista am used to it now. I hardly have any problems most of what i have are problems that were still on XP so nothings bad in that department.

Kinda makes everything else you said void....>.>

I disagree, since McDoogle was complaining about the specs, not its ease of use.

The Vista hasn't been getting a lot of love, which makes me kinda skeptical.... my old tablet PC is still working fine if a little weatherbeaten, methinks it can probably last a couple more years. I'll see what happens by then.

Vista is sluggish and a bit annoying with UAC (witch can be turned off) nevertheless I've been using vista and it needs to have a good system to be capable of operating smoothly, I like vista but to a certain degree, I wouldn't recommend it to people but I'd be happy to dispense advice and other such nuisances :D

Vista was a nightmare for me at work because everytime I had a connection problem, I had to reset it manually (and since it's only recently that our new network admin - :3 - could debug it, it was a real pain in the neck). Since then though it's ok, no more troubles for me (unlike Firefox 3 that forced me to go back to FF2 :D).
But I gotta say, it's not very intuitive and sometimes I'm like ":yell give me back XP dammit!". As someone at my work noticed, Vista is not user-friendly, it has a lot of details changing and that made a lot of people upset because it was handled best in XP. Basically, at home, I'm still with XP - will wait for the next version to get out and see how it works :p At work, since what I have to do is mostly online, I just don't have to care :D

I have a laptop with Vista on it. It's so so, but definitely buggy in certain areas. It does strange things without provocation. I'd probably recommend against getting it. I'd wait until something else came out.

Not until next year, I've heard. I just got a new laptop just now, and it has XP on it..... I've been scared away by all the horror stories on the Internet. Anyhow XP works just fine, and I'm more familiar with it.

Vista is only dependable when it is on a Dual-core processor computer with 2 to 3 GB of Ram and a decent graphics card. Some laptop models out there aren't meant to run Vista...but manufacturers force Vista into them.

What you get is a Laptop model that should be running XP but it has Vista.

I'm one of those unlucky people who failed to see that before it was too late...I have a 512 MB Single-core Sempron Processor laptop with Vista....and its laggy and it freezes constantly.

To make matters worse...some laptop models that have Vista already with the drivers needed to make the laptop work can't be rolled back to XP because of missing drivers for the laptop's components (Wireless, Display drive, etc) ergo its a way of forcing Vista onto us.

I don't really get all the Vista hate. I've been using XP for 2 years on my old computer and recently I got my new laptop which had Vista Home Premium pre-installed so I just got used to it. It didn't take much, barely a week and I could use it as good as XP.

In my opinion it's pretty good. The only problems I've had were some game compatibility ones but that doesn't matter since it was nothing essential.

@OP: That annoying thing you speak of can be disabled.

I use Vista, and I'm using it as I type this. Everytime I open up Ares and iTunes (being a hardcore music downloader certainly doesn't help here, but I eventually buy the records if I love them, honest!) the screen goes black and tilts, every icon switches places, and the lower bar goes to the top when in reality you can't click on it on the top, but on the black bottom.

So in my humble opinion: This is trash compared to XP

Yoes same here! The icons get all jumbled on the screen after it goes black... VERY ANNOYING... And then you always have to confirm actions when even when deleting folders
ex. Are you sure you want to bla bla bla?

Grr...I hate Vista.
I hate how it randomly has blank pages which you can't x out of.
Plus, if you go to Ctrl + Alt + Delete, it goes to some other page instead of going straight to task manager. Very frustrating.

I use vista and XP

I am more used to XP, but vista really isn't bad at all

it has so many great features and although ti takes some getting used to, its much better than XP in terms of ease

it just really takes time to get used to
