Your Weekly Story

Koji Ichikawa had always been able to see spirits. Kind of an odd superpower, really, if you thought about it. Nobody had ever believed him whenever he told them about it, and to be honest, he hadn’t always believed in it himself.

Gradually, the spirits had started appearing less and less as he’d grown older, and though they’d always be present in the back of his mind, it was as if he’d been subconsciously distancing himself from them. Maybe he had just never wanted to see them and be different, maybe he had just stopped believing in spirits as he grew older, but one way or another, they seemed to have parted ways.

Until one day, they appeared in full force again. Reports of massive property destruction all over town; entire skyscrapers leveled; bridges, roads, and houses alike having been crushed underfoot by some kind of invisible new breed of giant monsters.

The general populace hadn’t been able to see them, but Koji could. Gargantuan beasts, several meters in height, sporting masks made of bone and holes right through the middle of their chests. He’d deduced right away that these were spirits as well … but far different from the ones he’d been used to. Along with them came black-robed, sword-wielding soldiers of demise, fighting the monsters in disharmonic dances to the death. It was all very dreamlike, to have been thrust right into a world where the dead had risen again to influence the world of the living, but Koji ignored it.

He had a loving family, a nice home, and he was pulling off a decent enough living as a bus driver. Why should he threaten his life just out of curiosity? He could see them, and so what? All the easier to avoid their clashes, he thought. It did seem that perhaps they were following him though. He shook his head and shifted into second gear. To be thinking about stupid things like this when he was already far behind schedule …

A giant hand baring razor-sharp claws blasted into the side of the bus, instantly killing several passengers and sending the bus careening off the highway, rolling wildly down a grassy cliff and smashing into several pieces of broken machinery. The owner of the hand leapt down to the side of the upturned bus and leered at the passengers, crushing the few survivors with his tail.

Koji was in full panic-mode by now. He’d died, he was sure of it. His mangled body lay crushed and bleeding beside him. A snapped chain extended around most of his body, heavily restricting his movement, and two more enormous beasts had appeared to join the first, along with a couple of smaller lackeys.

“Excellent … these souls shall be delicious.”

“You lazy scumbags, making me do all of the work,” spat the first, shark-like beast.

“Do not forget your dues, Squalo,” smirked another. “We bequeathed this power upon you, and you shall serve us, as was agreed.”

Squalo glowered at his masters but remained silent, instead electing to focus his interest onto the cowering souls.

Koji cursed to himself; this day clearly wasn’t about to get any better.

How It’s Done

Okay, so here’s the spiel for this week. Ten souls, all of them worth 40 points, and all bundled up together in one easy-to-carry package. Three powerful hollows (Squalo, Mephistolos, and Anubis) guarding them from hungry predators and/or saviors.

Two more separate groups of two souls each, each guarded by a weaker hollow (Zephyr for one of them, Negativ for the other) and worth 40 as well. These hollows cannot be fought by anyone outside of a specific range of Soul Points. This is to give those with a lower amount of Soul Points a chance to join in the fun without being ridiculously overmatched.

Your job, my dears, is to kill these guys off to get to the soul. How you do it is up to you. Will you set aside your differences, shinigamis and hollows? Will you enact an alliance and backstab your teammates? Will you just wing the whole thing and hope that you don’t die? Proper planning with your teammates should be of the essence here.

This is technically a free-for-all battle, and anybody is fair game, including those you are allied with. Shinigami ought to follow Soul Society law though, or they might get into trouble. If a combination of shinigami and hollow manage to break through and get to the souls, I expect a fight between the two factions. Shinigami and hollows aren’t supposed to go “okay, I’ll save half, and you can eat the rest,” and I expect to see that reflected in the RP, unless extraordinary circumstances arrive to help.

2. Heat Resistance: As a shark-type hollow, Squalo's water-based defences are naturally fire-resistant. Kind of ironic considering the circumstances of his death.

3. Feeding Frenzy: Throwing all subtlety to the winds, Squalo launches himself like a torpedo at his target and attempts to bite him to death.

4. Primitive Hierro: Squalo’s body has been reinforced to the point where breaking through it takes far more effort than even for most menos. Just what has happened to him since his creation … ?
Passive Ability | Cost: 500 | Effect: Raises maximum defense by 100 for duration of battle, raises defense recharge by 50 for duration of battle.

Mephistolos

Abilities:
1. Cloak of Blackest Night: Not only does this cloak hanging off the hollow’s back act as both shield and camouflage, it looks pretty damned sexy as well.
Cost: 200 | Effect: Raises defense and speed both by 125 for the duration of the turn. Can only be used three times per battle.

2. Grasping Shadows: A dimensional rift opens up beneath the target, and creeping shadows reach out and attempt to inhibit the target’s movement.
Cost: 150 | Effect: If successful, lowers the speed of all the target’s actions by 75 for the next 3 turns. | Speed: 150 | Just to clarify, this attack cannot be countered.

3. Darkness Wave: A wide, ferocious swath of reiatsu that slices apart anything in its path.
Cost: 75 | Attack: Double Damage | Speed: 50

4. Charge: Takes 75% of Mephistolos’ current stats (Attack, Defense, and Speed) and converts it into Reiryoku. Mephistolos cannot perform any other actions for the next turn, including dodging or defending. Must be used at beginning of turn.

Anubis

Abilities:
1. Mummification: Creates bandages out of Anubis’ own reiatsu that wrap around the opponent, rendering him or her immobile.
Cost: 200 | Effect: Does not allow the target to dodge or attack for the next turn. Can be resisted by suppressing it with strength equal or greater to the cost. | Speed: 250

2. Bloody Sphinx: Summons a sphinx and sets it loose on the opponent.
Cost: 400 | Effect: Summons a sphinx with 600 Health and Reiryoku, and 150 of each stat. However, with each turn, the sphinx automatically loses 100 Health, in addition to whatever damage has been dealt to it. Killing a sphinx does NOT gain you any additional Soul Points.

3. Crest of the Ankh: Anubis carves the shape of an ankh into the air, followed by replicas of the symbol appearing all around the opponent and all converging onto his or her position.
Cost: X | Attack: 5 separate attacks of 0.25 X. | Speed: 5 separate attacks of 0.25 X. | This attack cannot be countered.

4. God Of The Dead: Anubis bares his fangs by blasting his opponents with a gigantic beam of pure reiatsu.
Cost: 100 | Attack: Double Damage | Speed: 75

Zephyr
Health: 750/750
Reiryoku: 750/750 (+37)
Attack: 200
Defense: 180
Speed: 160
Recharge: 210 (+70)

Abilities:
1. Twister: Creates a light current of wind, not enough to damage the target, but reasonably good at disorientation.

2. Windstorm Slice: A single gust of wind, fearsome enough to gain a cutting edge, is thrust at the opponent.
Cost: 75 | Attack: Double Damage | Speed: 50

3. Lackey Status: Stronger fighters don’t even care about this hollow; she isn’t even worth their time. While this is both insult and blessing, it sure is convenient for lesser fighters trying to make name for themselves.
No Cost | Effect: Only characters with less than 400 Soul Points may fight this hollow.

1. Rollout: Negativ uses his almighty dung beetle powers to create a gigantic ball of waste, which he uses to attempt to squish his opponent.

2. Repulsive Odor: Because nobody ever wants to be near him with that disgusting smell of his, Negativ gains additional ease when dodging.
Passive Ability | Effect: Every attack against Negativ automatically loses 15 speed.

3. Lackey Status: Stronger fighters don’t even care about this hollow; he isn’t even worth their time. While this is both insult and blessing, it sure is convenient for lesser fighters trying to make name for themselves.
No Cost | Effect: Only characters with less than 900 Soul Points may fight this hollow.

"... What is this?" Zephyr had noticed Sai's presence, and was slowly turning her head to face him. "You are human, and yet ... you can see me? How strange ..."

The hawk-like hollow looked downwards at the newcomer, empty-looking eyes fixated on him. Her plumage was vivid; shades of brilliant gold highlighted an otherwise brown coat, and as the light hit the crest up above her mask, you could see that all seven colors of the rainbow were reflected in it. Her talons held fierce, hooked claws glinting in the afternoon sun that looked like they had been crafted solely for disembowelment. Behind her, two tails rustled slightly in the slowly growing wind.

A short pause, and she continued speaking.

"You are a phenomenon, human ... but I'm afraid my orders were to destroy anybody who arrives here ... I apologize for this."

She lunged forwards at the Quincy, claws bared to strike (100 Strength, 100 Speed).

Lexi Hunter watched cautiously from behind the thicket, trying her hardest to avoid detection. These hollows were far too strong for her to fight alone ... should she call for backup?

Before she could make the decision, one of the hollows managed to find her reiatsu signal. Darting up to greet her, the shark-like hollow slammed his claws into her sword, which she'd just been able to draw in time.

"Hahaha, pitiful," laughed the hollow. "Is this all? And here I thought our bait would attract bigger fish than just this. Get out of here, you're just a waste of time."

Lexi made no sound, opting instead to jump backwards a few meters to give herself some breathing room.

One against three? Hmm, don't like my odds here. Hope backup comes soon or I'm toast.

After getting used to her new body, Azul opened a Garganta of her own to go into the real World. The trip was uneventful, but when she arrived - she spotted not only Lexi Hunter, but three enormous shadow like creatures, not unlike herself

"Can it be that after such a long time, we met again Lexi Hunter? Well... after all this changes, not sure if she can recognize me anymore. Looks you are in dire need of help, mind if I join?"

Keiji dropped down from the sky and sliced at the mummified-jackal hollow, jumping away before its many bandages could wrap around him. He landed right next to Lexi, "So what did I say about you running off on your own hmm? He looked over the three hollow once more, especially the one he just hit, Barely did anything to it...this will be a tough one alright...

"Kukukukuku ..." Anubis laughed quietly to himself - their trap had been sprung, and now in front of him stood two menos grande, as well as two shinigami of adequate power.

The frail-looking jackal's mask was scarred beyond belief, with bandages hanging loosely off of it, but the eyes that glinted behind it had a clear look of hunger in them. He gave his comrades sidelong glances, and then a nod forwards, the message of “attack at will” being obvious.

“Give it up already! You four don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell against us!”

He twirled his own smaller scythe in a circular motion, and a dark portal opened up beneath Julia, amorphous shapes forcing their ways out and attempting to latch onto their target (Grasping Shadows: Cost 150, Speed 150).

“Do not resist. Your deaths shall be less painful that way.”

Following his subordinates’ leads, the mummified jackal leapt into the fray, first aiming a ferocious slash at the other menos (Azul) (700 Attack + 200 Reiryoku, 900 Speed) before leaping backwards, carving the shape of an ankh into the air as he did. Suddenly, several of them appeared around the remaining shinigami (Keiji) and converged onto his position (1200 Reiryoku, 5 attacks of 300 Attack and 300 Speed each).

He drew back to admire his handiwork, chuckling slightly as he did.

Might as well join in on the fish beating he shrugged, jumping on the shark hollow and stabbing down (Strength 601 Speed 601), "Say...I wonder if you'd really like to find out what hell is really like, test your snowball theory and what not," he said as he flipped off and landed nearby.

Zephyr allowed the first attack to glance off of her body, hardening the reiatsu in her feathers enough to not feel a thing (85 Defense). The second blast looked to prove more problematic, but only slightly as the hawk-like hollow side-stepped the oncoming bolt of reiatsu, allowing it to whiz past her and level a tree in the distance (130 Speed + 120 Reiryoku).

“You fight valiantly, human,” she said in monotone, “but courage alone will not save you. Prepare … for the sweet embrace of death.”

She thrust both her wings sideways, gathering reiatsu as she did, and then forwards, letting the momentum burst forth in the form of a deadly blade of air (150 Cost, 300 Damage, 50 Speed).

“Kusou … things aren’t looking too good for me at the moment …”

Squalo dove underneath the menos’ slashing attack in true shark fashion, rising up for a biting counterattack (380 Attack + 570 Reiryoku – 450 Damage = 500 Damage, 250 Speed + 200 Reiryoku), teeth burrowing themselves deep into the other hollow’s supple flesh. He murmured a quick word of thanks as Mephistolos rushed in from out of nowhere to deflect the purple-haired shinigami’s strike, and allowed the final attack to hit his hardened skin (620 Defense, 51 Reiryoku).

“Hahahaha,” he roared, “so you hosers think you can all team up on me, eh? Better try harder next time!”

Despite the overconfidence of his speech, he was panting visibly … he’d exhausted a good amount of his energy keeping the assault at bay. He’d have to be more careful the next time.

The wraith ignored his target’s evasion of his attack, instead electing to focus his efforts on the two shinigami. Bowling the smaller one (Lexi) out of the way (700 Attack, 690 Speed + 10 Reiryoku), he threw himself into the path of the purple-haired shinigami’s (Keiji) attack, bringing up his Cloak of Black Night as he did so (200 Cost, 601 Defense, 125 Speed + 476 Reiryoku) in order to deflect it completely.

Landing gracefully in front of Keiji, Mephistolos swung his scythe off to the side, leaving a blast of reiatsu in its path and searing through the air into the shinigami’s position (Darkness Wave, Cost 700, Attack 1400, Speed 50 + 1350 Reiryoku).

Bah, Squalo is losing? Useless …

The mummified jackal swung his stave around and planted it into the dirt, making it tremble and shake all over. Two giant clumps rose out of the ground, forming themselves into the shape of two sphinxes, which bounded off to assist the shark-like hollow (Bloody Sphinx: Cost 800).

He dodged the wave of darkness that swept towards him with a quick step (700 Reiryoku), and used the momentum to come crashing down on the shark hollow once more (Strength 260 Speed 260).

However, the latter had used an especially weak attack … too weak. The shark rushed the purple-haired shinigami, smashing his way past the sword and biting a healthy chunk out of his target’s body (Counter: 250 Attack + 1210 Reiryoku – 260 Attack = 1200 Damage, 250 Speed + 10 Reiryoku).

The shark fell back, warm blood dripping from his lips. “Delicious …”

The wraith hollow saw the massive wave of acid coming straight at him and completely lost his previously near-silent composure, eyes darting around frantically, unable to escape.

“What? No … that’s too …! You fools, my cloak can … no … FUCK! You … you … !”

Mephistolos stood stock-still as the acid peaked in height above him, threatening to crash down and melt his entire body. His eyes went entirely blank for a second, and then became lit ablaze, glinting viciously in the sunlight.

“You filthy piece of trash! I’m going to fucking KILL YOU! I’m going to RIP YOUR GODDAMNED ARMS OUT AND STICK MY FUCKING SCYTHE DOWN YOUR STUPID FUCKING THROAT! I’LL KILL YOU I’LL KILL YOU I’LL -“

The acid engulfed him completely, and he was suddenly nowhere to be seen, at least until he burst out the other end, body half-melted and coated with a wide array of terrible burns that had seared deep into his body.

His screaming tirade had ceased, but he remained burning with the utmost fury, charging all of his reiatsu into one finale (Charge: 0.75 of 290 + 290 + 554 = 850 Reiryoku). An enormous wave of black energy erupted from his scythe (564 Cost, 1128 Attack, 50 Speed + 700 Reiryoku) at the gigantic menos (Julia) before he fell back, blood and acid streaming from his battered body.

“Anubis-sama … I … have failed … avenge … me …”

The wraith expired and his body crumpled down onto the ground, entirely unmoving.

Anubis turned back to the wraith, just in time to hear his pitiful last words. He laughed sonorously at the sound of it, a cruel, harsh laugh that echoed horribly despite the clearing.

“Ahahahaha! You dare to address me after your complete failure? Perhaps you will be avenged, you pathetic excuse for a hollow, you disgrace to all of my soldiers, but that is not up to me to decide. Menos … the choice is up to you. Will you stand by my side and rule over Hueco Mundo … or do you choose death?”

By now, Lexi was starting to feel as if she’d been forgotten in the whole scuffle. Sure, she’d assisted in the killing of the wraithlike hollow, but only barely; she was sure that her S&M hollow pal would’ve been able to kill it at full strength whether or not she’d attacked him.

Another pressing issue … the fact that she and Keiji hadn’t been able to send the hollow off to Soul Society before its death. Surely even it deserved a second chance in the afterlife, didn’t it?

Lexi stared all around her and lingered at that spot in the grass. The tides were turning in their favor, and perhaps she’d even be able to help if she waited for the perfect chance.

Mephistolos was dead …but that was merely another obstacle out of his way … the wraith had always been the weakest link anyhow …

Squalo leered at his shinigami opponent, baring his fangs and showing off the bloodstains that were dripping oh-so-slowly off of his lips. His enemy looked considerably worse for the wear, missing several body parts and bleeding profusely from the hole in his torso, though still standing perfectly straight and speaking rather nonchalantly, as if the gaping wound in his side was as trivial as a few drops of rain.

“Teme … just what are you up to?”

A sphinx rushed in and took the green-haired girl’s attack (150 Defense + 150 Reiryoku, 150 Speed + 450 Reiryoku), falling apart in midair as it connected with its body. The first menos who’d attacked him (Azul) had expended far too little effort into her attack, and she’d pay for that in blood. Squalo leapt into the air, bypassing the enormous hand that reached down to crush him and tearing another hole out of the menos with his teeth (Counter: 500 Attack + 559 Reiryoku – 400 Attack = 659 Damage, 400 Speed).

The other two attacks, however, would prove more problematic. He hadn’t noticed the purple-haired shinigami come up behind him until it was too late, barely being able to focus reiatsu into his skin in time to block (1760 Attack - 620 Defense = 1140 Damage). The attempt was entirely futile, however, as the blade pierced through his skin like a hot knife through butter, nearly bisecting him and sending blood gushing out like a cascading waterfall.

He didn’t even have time to see the next one coming; the second menos’ attack blasted into his back, sending him crashing down into the ground as a bloody mess of training flesh and broken mask.

Squalo staggered up from the wreckage slowly, eyes glinting with pure hatred.

“You bastards! I’ll gut all of you like fishes on a hook!”

The mummified jackal stood high in the sky, staring down at the pathetic souls below him and evaluating his next options … and then he found it. The green-haired girl was far too out of it this fight for her own good, and she would regret it … he dove down and struck, aiming to break her head in two with his stave (270 Attack + 715 Reiryoku, 516 Speed).

On second thought, his sphinxes were on their last legs as well; one had already lost about half of its body. He sent them off to last ditch efforts upon the larger menos (Julia), and they pounced at her, one (100 Attack + 30 Reiryoku, 100 Speed + 30 Reiryoku) after the other (150 Attack, 150 Speed).

The mummified jackal had just taken it upon himself to dive-bomb her, stave held out to break her head open. Without even thinking, she jerked her zanpakuto upwards to deflect it (985 Attack - 331 Defense = 654 Damage), only to have it brush past and impale itself onto her skull.

The impact of the attack sent her flying off into the air, crashing down upon some nearby hill with blood oozing profusely out her forehead.

Blood erupted out the gash that had been violently torn out of his face, removing a quarter of his head in the process. He made a blind stab at the menos who’d attacked him (Azul) (250 Attack, 250 Speed), and fell to the ground, panting heavily and trying desperately to keep his crumbling mask in one piece.

“YOU – y YOU FuCKErSSSZzz553 … KkiLlyuu …”

The rock smashed through the remnants of his face, sending bits of mask and bone flying up into the air, and lodged itself deep into his brain. His broken jumble of threats ceased, and his battered body crumpled down, limp as a rag. Squalo had fallen.

Zephyr stared all around herself, taking in the image of her attackers. A shinigami … a human … a hollow … and one who appeared to be shinigami, but acted completely independent. An interesting mix to fight a battle, for sure.

“So, shinigami, human, and hollow alike are putting aside their differences to fight me? Truly a extraordinary day … to think that these mere souls have attracted such a crowd …”

She parried the first, reckless attack, stabbing at the assassin’s (Altair) unprotected torso with a razor-sharp beak (Counter: 100 Attack – 50 Attack = 50 Damage, 50 Speed), before doubling back to take the shinigami’s attack (150 Defense). This one was strong … but he had exerted too much of his energy attacking. He would be easy pickings later on. The hawk turned her gaze to the hollow and the human. The hollow seemed to be the strongest of her opponents, but decidedly more cowardly than the others as well, judging from how he hadn’t even attempted to attack. She also had a vested interest in such a spiritually powerful human, anyways …

Zephyr eyed the hollow for a split second, and then blasted herself off in its direction, gathering reiatsu into her wings as she did. It built up rapidly, like a current of water out a broken dam, and became one with the air surrounding it, sharpening it and growing a cutting edge to it. The hawk-like hollow thrust her wing forwards, and the blade of reiatsu erupted from it, speeding its way towards the hollow’s neck (Windstorm Blade, 100 Cost, 200 Attack, 50 Speed + 150 Reiryoku).

Brandishing her umbrella in the direction of the hollow, the water source on which she was standing moved forward, she jumped and swung her umbrella overheads like a sword (40 str; 40 spd) - and behind her, a torrent of water followed Lero's movements (Cost: 50 (first form cost) + 75 125 total; Attack: 125*2 = 250 total; speed: 50)

This was done with the intention of crushing the hawk in the floor. A nifty movement Ariella had learned on one of her mangas.

As it had before, the ankh replicated itself several times around their intended target, before all of them flew in for the kill (300 Reiryoku, 5 attacks of 75 Attack and 75 Speed).

In the confusion, he leapt at the larger of the menos (Julia), and attempted to burrow another hole straight through her body (540 Attack + 30 Reiryoku, 570 Speed).

Alright, Vizard_King, you’re going to have to make a few alterations to your post. First off, 21 divided by 3 happens to be 7, and not 9, plus you get a 5% recharge each turn for your Reiryoku (which for you, would be 5). Next off, you can’t defend against a counter, you’re forced to take the whole hit. And last off, you forgot to include your recharge in your final stat count, which should look like this:

All of a sudden, Anubis regained his movements, but remained limp, acting more like a marionette pulled up by strings. His eyes were blank darkness, neither revealing nor seeing anything, and his head drooped downwards pitifully, swinging loosely from side to side has his body moved, seemingly of somebody else’s accord.

His body lurching back and forth, unsteady but still standing, and his hands drew his staves, allowing the ends to droop down onto the ground. As if his movements were choreographed, his limp body swung one stave in a motion that cut sharply into the first menos to attack (Azul) (Counter: 780 Attack + 333 Reiryoku – 300 Attack = 813 Damage, 300 Speed), leapt out of the range of the second (260 Speed), and as the third attack came onwards, he danced nimbly around it (300 Speed), still going through the motions as if an invisible puppeteer was controlling him from the skies.

As a finisher, he rushed at the green-haired shinigami to the side, whipping his other stave at her neck (175 Reiryoku into Attack, 120 Speed + 55 Reiryoku).

Focusing her spiritual energy into it had the same effect as dousing it with gasoline would have, as it inflamed up to the size of a soccer ball, flaring out at its target as it built itself up.

The hawk-like hollow reared backwards, attempting to analyze her opponents more carefully. The attacks were of no consequence … either they were quick but weak, or strong but slow. She acted accordingly, shielding herself against the oncoming water (20 Defense), and sidestepping the attacks of the two shinigami (44 Speed). The last one … the hooded assassin … he was definitely on his last legs. She darted forward to finish him off …

Then all of a sudden, an enormous reiatsu jumped off of existence.

Anubis? … Meph? Squalo? … No, they’re all dead! How … damn it! How could I have let … damn it …

The shock of it practically had the effect of submerging here attack through water, as it slowed it to the point where anyone could take advantage of her momentary pause (5 Attack, 5 Speed).

Shuga watched as the combined attacks were easily avoided. As the hollow attempted to counter however, Shuga was surprised by its reduced effectiveness. With his poor sense of reiatsu, he was oblivious to the conclusion to the fight elsewhere.

The opportunity for the counter is there, but the strength is too little between us.

Shuga yelled at the assassin, who seemed to be straining under the pace of the fight: "I'm pulling out, the flow is against us!"

He then followed up the human's attack to deliver a parting shot while the hollow was distracted.

Hopefully this will give her an opening to withdraw...
