The mid morning streets of Seretei were quite busy. Some Shinigami from the various divisions had just finished their morning training and were on their way to sub group briefings. Others were gathering in teams and preparing for their living world patrol shift. Just another working day for a shinigami. Shuga felt quite proud sporting his shinigami garb. Looking around, he noticed some of the accessories various shinigami were carrying. He was particularly interested in the gadgets that were being used.
I wonder if I'll be issued with some equipment like that. The academy training seemed to show that all working shinigami have them.
Because Shuga was not yet a working death god assigned to a squad, he wasn't on any payroll yet. All he had was issued allowance for basic meals, and a pass for the academy premisis where he could stay until he had joined a division. That concluded the list of the contents of his sachel. He was excited though, by the possible purchases he would be able to make in his near, cash-earning future.
Shuga was still making his way to the 3rd division suburb. According to information at the academy, the 3rd division headquaters weren't particularly large, and were awkardly located in a rather cramped area of Seretei. Following directions from various shinigami along the way, he slowly headed in the right direction. Of all the shinigami he'd seen and spoke to so far, none seemed to belong to the 3rd division. In fact, Shuga could not recall anyone in his class mentioning that they would be joining the obscure division.
Perhaps they know something I don't ...
He chuckled as he considered that, but his amusement soon faded. In considering it for a moment, he realized that perhaps that wasn't so funny. He hadn't heard anything negative or worrying about the 3rd, but then again, he hadn't heard anything positive either.
Perhaps everyone is just attracted to the more famous divisions, and they forget about the 3rd. It's probably not that bad, just not well understood.
With that thought in mind, he pushed on. As he progressed, the streets became narrower, and the buildings taller. Each building was built against the other with no spaces between them except for the streets. If it wasn't so clean and the buildings didn't seem so sturdy and well finished, it might have been mistaken for Rukongai. The buildings were clearly old, but very well maintained. Proceeding down the street he had been following for quite some time, Shuga noticed that it joined a small open square. The square had small restaurants and bars on each side, forming part of 4 story buildings which surrounded the square. There was a rich smell of foods and hot drinks filling the air. The busineses and the square itself weren't that busy. The only patrons around were older people, and souls who were not shinigami, but worked in Seretei to keep the day-to-day busineses running.
This area probably mainly services shinigami, and since it's not lunch yet, it's still empty. This looks like quite a nice place to spend some time. Hopefully the division headquarters aren't too far from here.
There were 3 roads entering the square. The one to the left of Shuga was much the same as the one he entered on. The 3rd road however, seemed slightly wider, and its straight flat surface allowed Shuga to see along it's entire length. It was lined with buildings which seemed to be comprised of many rooms, each with a small veranda overlooking the street.
Those are probably barracks for shinigami.
At the end of the street, Shuga saw the place he was looking for. A slightly taller building which looked like a small fort. The 1st wall of the fort was joined to the barracks on either side, completely blocking off the street. The wall had a wooden gate which filled most of it. From street level, Shuga could not see much of the headquaters. The high barracks buildings obscured his view of the fort. All that he could make out was a wide, yet low pagoda-like building in what was probably center of the complex. It looked like it was about a 15 min walk from the gate he was at. Beside the wooden gates which were open, hung a large plaque reading "3rd Division Headquarters: Rest Gate". He proceeded towards it with a tingling sense of aniticipation.
This is it... I hope it goes well. I wonder if I'll be able to meet the vice-captain on the first day, or even the captain.
Such thoughts ran through Shugas mind as he approached the gate. It was an exciting occasion, though anyone who migh've been watching Shuga at that moment would have been hard pressed to tell if he was excited, or in fact, feeling anything at all. He looked at the buildings beside the road, trying to spot any shinigami that might be watching him. He didn't sense any reiatsu, but he didn't kid himself into thinking he was particualrly talented at that shinigami skill. Besides that, his eyes didn't reveal any onlookers either.
Strange. I guess everyone is just really busy today.
As he got to the gate, he noticed a small enclave that was hidden from his view from further down the road. Inside it was a shinigami slumped in a chair. She had a very bored look on her face which was dimly lit by the screen of the small electronic device she was fiddling with.
"Excuse me."
The shinigami suddenly looked at Shuga with eyes filled with hope, something Shuga found a bit creepy.
"My name is Shugoshita Shuga,... I'm here to enroll in the division. Err, could you tell me where to go to do that exactly?"
The shinigami looked at Shuga for a moment, then tears began to fill her eyes.
"Oh, err I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you cry. Wait, why are you crying? Did something happen?"
"Thank you", she said ever so softly. Shuga was hopelessly confused as to what was happening.
"THANK YOU!!", she screamed maniacally, thrusting her hands to the sky (which sent her mobile phone flying out of the enclave and smashing to pieces on the open gate).
"Um, what exactly is happening?"
Even as Shuga asked this, the female shinigami seemed in a trance, staring at the sky with tears streaming down her face.
"At last you've come! I love you so much!", she said joyfully looking at Shuga.
If Shuga had been able to form a coherent thought at that point, he might have mused on how similar his current state of confusion was to someone who had been hit by a truck.
