With Movie refrences aplenty and more Cussing than most rated R movies
Black Lagoon is one of the coolest Non-supernatural Modern Day Anime I have ever seen.
The Godfather meets Pirates.
GoodFellas Meets the Wild Bunch.
and so on and so forth.
And lets not forget the hard rocking Opening Song.
Just so you all know, I'v seen the Anime up to the Third DVD.
Still goota see Season 2.
I prefer the Dubs.

Awsome Quotes:
Revy: "You Understand? Yes? Got that, Chinglish?"
Shenhua: "My English not very good because I pure Thaiwanese, Perhaps I should skin your ass, Bitch?"
Revy: "Guns Over Swords and Nukes over Guns. Now if we had one of THOSE..!"
Rock: "This is insane! She's like a psyco robot from the future...If only we had Arnold Schwarzenegger..."

I also love this show, its not the most intellectual or the most emotional, but it is among the best when it comes to pure fun. The action is very intense, exciting, as well as being animated well. What may be the best part is the dialogue which can be funny, realistic, and surprising poingent.
The characters are some of the better ones that I have seen, Revy is one my personal favorite female characters out there, but I think what makes this anime so great are the supporting characters.
What is interesting is that the English dub is actually significantly better than the sub. One thing that helps is that since this is an international setup for the show naturally we also should have accents in the show as well, the english dub accounts for this, at least it seems like it, since I don't really know what a Chinese or for that matter Irish accent is like in Japanese, also the language that is supposed to be spoken in the show is English. Of course we don't have a Japanese accent for Rock but I think its alot of fun to hear the Russian although weak, Taiwanese, German, and all the other ones as well. The other thing is that this is one of the rare animes where the writing has actually been improved, the diologe seems to be much more rough, with a lot more cussing and suggestive language, this helps the atmosphere seem much more like the underworld that its supposed to be. Overall I suggest anyone to try and watch the dubs over the sub.
Great show! Saw season 1 awhile back, and I'm looking forward to watching season 2 soon :D

I agree with you completely, Spartan. The Japanese don't really have different "Accents" like English speakers do. Thats why I love the Dub.
And such witty lines too
Revy: You the getaway Driver?
Irishman: *Flicks her off* No, I'm a fockin' lier, what do you think?
And I love Revy too. I love Benny's line as he watched Revy, Roberta and Balalaika facing off
"Those have to be the three scariest women in the world.."
So very true.

With regards to the accents and the dialog I look at it like how many people regard good dubs, in that most people don't think good dubs are terrible but that there is just a little missing from them. I think the sub is good, its just that the dub is excellent, I liken it to the Cowboy Bebop dub, I think the major thing is that in both of these shows English is supposed to be how its heard. The voice acting is just spot on in terms of the accents and the performences, I think its little wonder that CB is considered one of the great dubs due to the setting just like this one.
I love that Irish pothead, he has some great lines, such as "I have to go to Liverpool, I have to kill the Klingons, Captain PICARD!!!!"
The second season is really good, it has I believe three arcs, all of them offer something different, the only problem is that Benny and Dutch get a little less face time, but this is made up for in the secondary characters, it also leaves the possibility for third season, but I doubt we will get one.

I love that line.
I havent seen the second season yet, the DVDs out over here in the states?
And I agree. I think many fans disregard the dubs altogether.

The second season is going to be delayed, because Geneon who had the license has now gone bankrupt. I heard that the Ocean group who does the dub is still going to do the voices for the second season, but there is the question over when the dub will be released. Black Lagoon is the only anime that I have made a point of going out to buy the dvds, not because I dislike dubs, but because I knew that they were going to be good, I feel bad about that but I am starving college student at this time, so I don't really have the money to buy anything I like.
One the subject of dubs in general, I think its interesting that most of the serious animes that are released seem to also be the same animes that are dubbed well, I think this is because to us it seems a lot more natural to listen to more mature voices play characters who are either acting mature or are voiceing adults, than to hear mature voices try to do younger people. To the normal english speaking person, or for that matter a non-japanese speaker we don't hear the weirdness that one hears when a older person voices someone who is younger than themselves, to us it seems strange and off, but when we hear it in Japanese we just hear what we have always heard.
I'm not saying that all dubs are good, but they are much better than the majority say they are.

I'm in the same situation, man. Though replace Black Lagoon with Hellsing OVA, I know that the Dub is perfect for Hellsing, so whenever it comes out, which is like one every half a year maybe more if they really take their time on it, which is usually a good thing.
I got Black Lagoon from Netflix.
Wait...
Geneon is bankrupt? But they have so many good Anime coming out!

I don't know what will happen with the licenses that Geneon have, but they are out of buisness, so it may be a long time until we see the Second Barrage, it sucks but thats how it is, on the plus side at least we won't lose the original cast, at least that's what I heard through the grapvine.

Awesome show, one of my favorites. This anime is made by the same people as Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. Those people know how to make a good show.

Hm....how can Geneon be bankrupt? Ah yes, torrents of the world unite.

That sucks. There goes like half the great Adult Swim Anime.
Least the cast is the same.
Geneon know what the fans want fan they fuckin' deliver.
Take Hellsing for example. The Show's Voice Cast was beyond perfect. And 5 or so years later, the OVA comes out. And who do the choose for the cast? The same great Voice Actors and the great Talison Jaffre as the Line Producer.

Well if anybody is interested the second season of Black Lagoon was dubbed, but it wasn't released because of Geneon failing, but the second season along with the first is airing on Starz Edge.
Starz Edge started airing Black Lagoon on February 11 and they're up to around episode 9 now. So if anybody has Starz Edge they can watch it. I don't have cable so it's too bad for me.
So who is everybodies favorite fight scene?
I liked them all but my favorites were the Neo-Nazi boat fight, it was just fun watching Revy slowly kill all those Nazis. I also liked the car chase at the end of episode 12.

Black Lagoon is one of my fav series!! Anyone else hear that they're making a 3rd season?
I haven't caught any of the dubbed version, is it any good?

Hey JebbaChan, go join the Black Lagoon FC, there's like 10 pages of discussion there, and some info on the series as well.
To answer your question, imo I think the dub is better than the sub, you get the right accents, the language I think is grittier and more appropriate for the setting, the whole thing just seems more authentic consider the players are supposed to be talking in english, there isn't any dumbing down of the material.

I'v also thought that the dub is very good. Most of the characters voices match well, especially Dutch's and Benny's voices. It took me a while to get used to the voices of Rock and Revy, but they're good also. Spartan is right, the dub doesn't edit down any of the language or dark jokes, it even increase the cursing at times, which I think fits better with the atmosphere of Black Lagoon. The only voice that I found problems with was Mr. Chan voice, it didn't seem as care free as the original voice, but all the other voices I found to match up well with the characters.
I have heard rumors about their being a 3rd season, but I don't think there will be anytime soon. The reason why is because when the anime ended its second season, it was nearly caught up with the manga. The anime ended at chapter 43 and the manga is at chapter 62 now and its still on the same arc. If there will be a third season it wont be anytime soon unless it's an OVA after the current arc is done which I wouldn't mind.
I would also encourage you to join the Black Lagoon FC here.

I would say Mr. Chan's isn't as good as the original Balalaika's as well to a certain extent, hers could have sounded a little more russian, but the sub doesn't sound anything like russian so take it for it's worth.. Some would say the sub is better, but I'm just saying that if you like dubs, you'll like this one. Many people just like subs in general.

Hm....how can Geneon be bankrupt? Ah yes, torrents of the world unite.
Geneon US went bankrupt by licensing too many titles and barely handful that were popular compare with Viz and ADV. Geneon Japan is still active but the US one was close down and out of business.
One my favourite anime when I picked up with Namikawa Daisuke and Hirata Hiroaki 8D Revy is just adorable... The opening theme for the song is an epic win too. I just recently finished the Second Barrage...
I haven't seen season 2 yet, but this is a great anime so far. The action/animation is superb, and I have a thing for Rocky :o Revy is kinda like me when I'm upset heheh. Great series though!
Black Lagoon is just awesome one of my favs so far the action and animation are just awesome. Too bad there is only two seasons of Black Lagoon I was really hoping for a third season.

Well I posted this in the BL FC, but it appears that there are rumors that there will be a 3rd season! http://www.moetron.com/2008/07/12/black-lagoon-3rd-season-announced/
This of course would be awesome as BL is one of the best action animes in history, it's also a case where the industry is seriously lacking in the dark more mature area of anime, so I'm excited to see this.

A third season? Hmmm if it's really true, there gotta be time until the current arc is finished before a new season is even possible, up till now there are ca. 2 Tanks out which weren't made into anime yet, if that's really enough to fill up a whole Season (12 Eps.)? Not so sure about it, but at least happy that the possibility of a third season is there.

I know about there not being that much manga material. I'm thinking the DVDs did well, and they might be thinking about doing anime specific stuff, I wouldn't mind this, they could also do a half and half type thing. This could also possibly be something that will be done sometime like a year from now.
One thing about Black Lagoon is that most arcs are standalone since there isn't some overall main villain or story, other than just how relationships and characters evolve.

seriously existentialist John Paul Satre, "People are like dice" remember that, because what a good anime, the action was great but the meaning behind that....was great. Revy, and that samuri who could cut bullets...that shit was sad but those twins were F***ed up...really but kinda sad that they did that too survive...sad that they turned that way.......just remember that quote
