Shuga squinted aimlessly at the division posters, looking but not seeing. He'd seen them a number of times now, and the information they contained seemed to be etched on his retina.
I can see them even when my eyes are closed
The division posters contained motivations to join the various divisions. Aimed to capture new graduates from the Academy, each reflected the respective division rather well, more or less. As a new graduate himself, it was time for Shuga to choose his destiny. This task though, was proving extremely difficult.
Why am I here again? In this place at this time?
He looked around at the mostly empty Academy corridors. Virtually everyone had gone off to enroll in the Gotei 13 squads. He was the only one left. The grand, prestine walls of the academy seemed very inspiring for some reason. Shuga marvelled at the grandeur of the building for a moment. For a soul who came stumbling out of the desolate expanse beyond Rukongai, this was surely a life of luxury.
That barren place...
For a moment, Shugas memory threatened to drift to that time, ... that place. He quickly drove it from his mind.
That time is over. It has nothing to do with me anymore.
He assessed the posters once more, as if he had attained a new vigor. He didn't want to be stuck with a division that was responsible for a lot of adminstrative work. At the same time, he wasn't exactly keen to be laying his life on the line at every opportunity. He just wanted to make a small difference where he could, and at least live a mildly interesting life while at it.
He quite enjoyed the training trips to the real world he did with the Academy classes, so perhaps a division which played some limited role there would be suitable. His eyes settled on the division 3 poster. Not very revealing as to the divisions purpose, yet it didn't seem particularly ambitious for some reason.
Just like me... Maybe, if I am promoted, the chance for a transfer might arise.
That seemed like a reasonable course of action, so he gathered his sachel and zanpakuto, his only possessions, and made his way to the division 3 enrollment building.
