Well there's alot of characters.

I don't know if this guy really counts but Gin from GNG, since he more or less never had a childhood.

Here's a picture of him the day before he was forced to grow up:
(eat raw bear meat or starve to death, getting beat up with a log (thik stink), having to endure the sound of a gun right beside his ear, beeing cast into a pool with raw bear meat at the bootom(can't reach it= you die)
His father killed, not allowed to be with his simbling nor mother not to forget ain't allowed to show emotions unless in extreme cases.

Note, he ain't even 1 month old there

Id say Guts from Berserk.Reasons why in a spoiler as people may not of seen/read berserk.
Firstly he was found in his dead mothers stomach(hence the name guts XD). He was raised by mercenaries that made him work and fight as soon as he could walk. The woman that took him in died and he was blamed as a curse. His father figure prostituted him to men. He was pretty much blamed when anything went wrong and was never shown any affection. Eventually his father figure tried to kill him but he managed to kill him first which he really didn't want to do. As his father figure was leader of the mercenaries they all turned on him trying to kill him. He escaped to fend for himself.

The Dicloni & Kohta (Elfen Lied)
* Seriously, the Dicloni have all be destined to live lives of torture and experimentation. And Kohta's childhood was definitely bad, his new found friend murdered his father and sister, which severely traumatized him. And Lucy's whole story is sad.

Asuka (Evangelion)
* Underneath her bitchy conceitedness, she's really just a scared girl who the attention that her mother never gave her. And seeing her mother hang herself, and the doll that her mother replaced her with, must'nt have been very good for Asuka's mental development, either.

Hameln (Violinist of Hameln)
* He hated being a demon and being picked on, and then to find out that he killed his best friend's parents and destroyed his village. Then trying to deal somehow with his half demon self

Kenpachi & Yachiru (Bleach)
* Being nameless and uncared for and living to fight. It's almost as if Kenpachi fights to prove his existence. I wonder how his and Yachiru's past were, really.

Hmm lots of people but I'd go with Guts from Berserk or Legato from Trigun.
Most people probably know about Gut's but Legato's wasn't shown in the the anime. If you wanna know it may spoil Trigun Max manga for you:

He was a sex slave who was paraded around on chains naked, he had no family or friends and was forced to sleep with fat ugly men and take their physical abuse also. When Knives killed everyone around he was the only one who survived and so he saw him as his hero and asked if he may follow him but didn't care if he died. Knives saw his apathy towards death and then asked why he should let him follow him so he manipulated his blades into giving him a haircut lol. Knives was impressed...so I'd say his messed up childhood is what sent him to the looney bin and made him so obsessed with Knives anyways. Blah I can't make it sound as bad as it is in the manga lol

...............................ok let us clarify what a messed up childhood would be.

1. It has to be an entire childhood not just one bleep. Ichigo's mother died....sorry but it's one thing move one.

2. CHILDHOOD NOT ADULTHOOD. So Roy Mustang can kiss my ass in that regard.

3. Ummm....Luffy didn't have a messed up childhood. In fact I think he got off easy. His grandfather threated him......training people deal with it. His hero sacrificed an arm boo freakin hoo.

You want a real messed up child look at Asuka, Shinji, and Rei. Those childhoods are the worst you can get. I mean ok Inuyasha's in there with some others but the NGE children and Elfen Lied are the worst.

^Just had to laugh at the Roy Mustang comment.

I'd say:
Rukia Kuchiki-- Bleach.
Allen Walker -- D. Gray-Man.
Ed and Al Elric -- FullMetal Alchemist.
Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Garra -- Naruto.

Yeah that sounds pretty messed up. Which reminds me, Claire form Claymore: family killed by demons, drugged around to be molested by the said demon, saved by Teresa (who split the demon in half in front of her and blood spilled all over her), finally got Teresa to stop kicking her around and Teresa got killed b/c she killed the bandits that destoryed the whole town she was left in, which made her volunteered herself to be made into a claymore (a combination of demon flash and human flash).

The twins from Busou Renkin also had a uniquely creepy childhood.

Asuka from Neon Genesis. Probably not the top of the chart, but still pretty bad.

Rukia had a bad childhood, but there's Kenpachi to top her in the same series (although 78th and 79th is probably all not too different-just the fact that none of Rukia and Renji's friends survived proves that, and Kenpachi might not have been a child when he died.).

Velius

How about Kirika from Noir. Having to spend your childhood going on assassinations doesn't sound like a fun time. lol. Unless you have your BFF, who is also a child, Chloe with you also killing. ha.

Sergelia

Gaara, Sasuke and Naruto from... well, Naruto (in that order)

Orihime, Uryuu and Rukia from Bleach (again, in that order)

But... Elfen Lied's Disclonius, all of them, are CROWNED as having the worst childhoods (Hell, entire lives) in manga history. Period.

They are pink haired girls that spend all their life naked and bloodied up, mercilessly tortured, barely fed, experimented with, have bombs implanted in their limbs, never loved by anyone... you get my point.

1. It has to be an entire childhood not just one bleep. Ichigo's mother died....sorry but it's one thing move one.

It’s not about Ichi's Mom dying it’s about the blame game he even mentions it to Isshin in MITR Arc

- Ichi blames himself for his mom's death

- Ichi blames himself for destroying a family

- Ichi also blames himself for denying mother’s love to twins

In addition, as he was a momma’s boy he misses her. Ichi as a kid for several days searched the spot where his mom died that gives you an idea what sort of Impact his mom’s death had

Rukia tops them all in Bleach (being abandoned as a baby in one of the worst area of Rukongai, anyone?). And then had to steal for food and see her childhood friends die one by one (and when she was what we can consider as a teen, she killed the man she loved -_-'). Ichigo's been pretty awful since he took all the blame on himself too. Inoue's, on the other hand, does not compare with them for that (she was cherished by her brother until he died and then was cherished by Tatsuki as a friend).

Naruto, Gaara and Sasuke in Naruto had awful childhoods too.

Marionette
07-31-2007, 01:03 PM
Robin (One Piece)

Oh yeah, how could I forget most of the cast of OP? I haven't read enough of the manga to get to Robin, but Nami's life was pretty screwed up too. Although for some reason she turned out to be the most normal person in the crew.

Mukuro from Yu Yu Hakusho

She was enslaved as a child by a fat demon rapist..He abused her and kept her in chains...She poured acid, effectively disfiguring and melting most of the right half of her body, just to make herself less appealing to him...She escaped but couldnt kill her enslaver..She threw herself off a cliff to get away but still couldnt break the shackles...While shackled, she became the most brutal and ruthless killer in Demon World because of all the hate she felt...

THATS a bad childhood

Seta Soujiro (Rurouni Kenshin)
Born as the result of his father cheating on his wife, he was always seen as something to be sickened and despised by the entire family. His birth mother died long ago, so he had no one to look to for love. He was forced to do all the work around the home and was beat regularly, his only escape was to stupidly smile and hope things would get better. After meeting Shishio and hiding him for a while, his family was going to kill him after they found out in hopes of obtaining a government reward. Running in fear, in a kill or be killed situation, he murders them all, wondering if the tears coming down were his or the rain. He lives out most of his older life as Shishio's emotionless assassin until he fights Kenshin for the final time. Releasing all the emotion he had harbored for so long, he finally realizes that on that day so long ago when he murdered his family in the rain, he really had been crying. He ends up wandering alone, searching for his own truth on life.

Himura Kenshin
Sole survivor in his family of a cholera epidemic, he was sold to a slave train. Fortunately he met three older ladies who were nice, but on route the slave train was attacked by bandits, him being the only one alive when Hiko Seijuro arrived on the scene. He buries all the bodies himself, and becomes Hiko's apprentice. At the age of 14 he leaves his master to take an active role in the Meiji Revolution, becoming the infamous assassin known as the Hitokiri Battousai. As the first year passes, kill after kill, he slowly loses his humanity and continuously stains his hands with blood. He then meets Yukishiro Tomoe, and circumstances lead to them living together as husband and wife. It is then that Kenshin realizes that the only thing a man can do is protect what he sees before him, with his own hands, and that all the murdering he did in the revolution was not the way. However this glimmer of happiness in his life is short-lived, as soon afterwards he ends up accidentally killing his wife Tomoe, and also learns that it was he who killed her first fiancee. From the age of 16 to 18, he then continues to stain his hands as the harbringer of death for the Ishin Shishi, leaving after The Battle of Toba-Fushima as a wanderer, hoping to atone his sins and the many lives he had taken

This thread is really awesome. The bad childhood is so cliche'd and overkilled. Everyone's been through war, lost their parents and family.

I think the most traumatic would be Edward and Alphonse from Full Metal Alchemist. Their father was never there, their mother died. They failed to transmute her, created a homonculous. Ed lost 2 limbs and Al lost his body.

Can anyone think of a fairly main character who is dare I say NORMAL, seriously at the moment I can't think of a main character (at least in Shonen) that hasn't had some tragic event happen to them, I guess it does create backstory, motivation, and well a starting off point. That is a good question, could you have an interesting and engaging character in a shonen who has a fairly typical childhood, two parents, no deaths, and or tramatizing memories.

Haha Allen's was pretty bad but it was portrayed in a somewhat light fashion.

Yoshimori from Kekkaishi had a fairly normal childhood, his traumatic experience was having his friend Tokine get her arm injured when she protected him from an ayakashi. Thats normal compared to most people.

Another traumatic childhood is Taitou from Jyuushin Enbu - Hero Tales, he had heaps of friends killed.

Shinrin

hmm... strangely the only main characters i remember atm not having a bad experience in there childhood, would be the ones whom we never saw the childhood off.

Abel from Trinity Blood and his simblings had a very diffrent "bad" childhood.
Actually when you know they likely had everything they needed, had tons of stuff to do, quickly gaine large influeces etc.
The problem however... There lives were planed by others, aka they never could do what they wanted to.(beeing created in a lap ain't helping either)

In my opinion there isn't a character with worse childhood than Gaara.
Poor kid- he hadn't have any guilt they sealed the demon in him. And not only he had no friends and everyone hated him, but even his father and his uncle tried to kill him thousands of times. Seriously, if I could I'd go there and beat those ba**ards up, they have no right to treat a little kid, who needs love and friends, as a satanic creature. It was really sad when the little Gaara said ' Even if I am not bleeding, it really hurts there'- and he touched his chest where the heart shoul be :(

i think that asuka langely sohryu from neon genesis evangelion had the absolute WORST childhood

Her mom went totally insane making the eva's...when she came back she thought that some doll was her child instead of her real child asuka, then asuka's mom comitted suicide tried to kill asuka and hung the doll whom she thought was asuka

Yeah, she does too.
Asuka did have awful childhood. It wuz really depressing when her mother, who suffered schizophrenia, talked to a doll as it was her daughter and said ' I don't need you anymore'. Dude, the one who created this anime is a real psycho...

That would be the following:

Gaara of Naruto (being the Jinchuriki of the Ichibi didn't help Little Gaara at all. Ridiculed and feared up to his very death in the hands of the Akatsuki, Gaara has many reasons to be evil, yet he chose not to. His past is so painful.)
Yukishiro Enishi of Rurouni Kenshin (Well, seeing your sister accidentally murdered in front of you isn't a good childhood memory. Also the murdering the family who took you in when you arrived in a strange country.)
Himura Kenshin himself (Murder and gore in front of him again and learning an ancient sword technique and killing people even as a boy)
Enma Ai of Jigoku Shoujo (Imagine your best friend burying you alive and everyone fearing your existence???)
Mudou Setsuna of Angel Sanctuary (Falling in love with your sister and being the reincarnation of the most powerful angel isn't an honor. Count the fact that your parents despised you and see you as vermin)
L Lawliet of DeathNote (Orphaned but brilliant. I don't know L's past but I pity him. He must've been through a lot to act that way)

Shojo Childhood Horrors!
From Fruits Basket:
1. Kyo-Mom commits suicide, Dad (and entire family) blames son for said suicide, fate is to be locked away forever
2. Momiji-Mom chooses to forget him (I hate that evil, Nazi B***) Dad goes along with it, lives alone
3. Yuki-Locked in a room alone by crazy powerful "Head of Family" who's just a confused boy/girl. Oh, and Mom let this happen for money.
4. Tohru-She has a great attitude, but really, living in a tent?

From Nana:
1. Shin-Mom committed suicide, Dad is MIA, prostitute by 15
2. Nana Osaki-Mom abandons her; Grandma verbally abuses her; First love abandons her

Shounen:
Most of the basic ground is covered in this thread , but no one mentioned LeLouche from Code Geass-His family is majorly messed up and inbred, and now he's out to kill his siblings ('cept Nanally) and his dad. He's still a kid.:(

Oh, and all the Wammy's House kids from Death Note. That Orphanage was one F'ed up place--everyone uses codenames, for Pete's sake!
