Never read the book or the musical<--whatever one is correct but I looooove Johnny Depp! I so gotta check out those trailers, thanks alot for it Lady
Also, I read some months ago that he would drop out of the film due to his daughter's illness? I'm glad he didn't though.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408236/trailers-me60746838 <---trailer from IMDB.
ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG I thought this movie was one big musical but seeing the trailer no it isn't!! kyaaaaaaa Johnny looks soo awesome in this flick, I can't wait until January 24 (yesh...poor old me) to come out here! Weeeh Johnny/Sweeney reminds me of the Jack the Ripper (hairdresser version).

What? It is a big musical, LOL!
http://www.amazon.com/Sweeney-Demon-Barber-Street-Deluxe/dp/B000X4OVLM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1195659805&sr=8-2
20 songs! :D I'm a little sad they left out "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd", but "God, that's Good!" is in so I'm okay with that!
And yeah! The trailer you posted is the one where Johnny is singing *swoons*
I hope he gets a Oscar nom for this movie!
There is a HORRIBLE twist at the end (at least in the musical). But it's a BRILLIANT musical none-the-less; my favorite Sondheim musical after "Into the Woods"
Thank you for posting this info here Lady O! :glomp I am such a big Tim Burton fan, I love the style and dark humour of his movies.
Probably going to watch it for Christmas when I go back to meet my family.
I read that the blood scenes in this movie are going to be completely over the top! I love over the top gore, especially it's done with a touch of black comedy.
I haven't seen the musical but I've listened to the sound track and it is really quite dark. I'm curious to see if Johnny can hit all those weird notes.

Kyaa yeah I love Johnny Depp, especially in combo with Burton it's a killer.
Gard, I am so envious of you all...Sweeney will be aired here in January>.< Noooooeee on my mom's birthday none the less but in January *major rant*
I just checked the release dates... UK it's 25th of January, Japan 19th of January. Looks like I'll probably watch it as a pirate first then onto the cinema. This will be a killer to wait for I don't think I can do it.
Darn it, the movie was filmed in the UK why can't it be shown in the UK at the same time as the US! *rant/foam*
(lol @ Space, it's good that you've got a sense of humour....>>; )

Aah, seems that Holland is before England then..but behind Japan..Man yeah, I 'spose I'll be going down that road too Mz D:D
@Space: you lucky this time, same date as Holland, the 24th
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408236/releaseinfo
There's a link to all the release dates. Kind of random, I guess it not being such a big block buster like Spiderman 3 it gets all sorts of release dates. At least the Japanese release will be in English with Japanese subs so I should be alright to watch it.:D
I want to go to the cinema to watch this one, musicals loose their effect when they're put onto the small screen. (Still going to download though. >>)

@Mz D: yeah I love that site, it's so good! I totally lol'd btw when Potc 3 came out earlier in Holland then in the U.S. About Spiderman 3, I don't know if it came out earlier over here..o no, it did not I think but o well:D
And yeah, that's good that you'll get the subbed version of Sweeney Todd, I hate dubbed films (here nothing's dubbed except for children's movies).

I can't wait to see Sweeney Todd 'cause I love Johnny Depp as well! That and I remember singing the Ballad of Sweeney Todd back in HS choir. It's funny 'cause we sang it at the Pan Am building (now Met Life building in NYC) as one of our selections for our "Holiday" program. Our choir director has a weird sense of humor. XD

This movie is looking cool (And really really F*cked up)
Which means I'll most likely like it.
Like most guys I'm into Evil Morbid Murder movies

The "Ballad of Sweeney Todd" was cut...which SUCKS because it was one of the best songs in the show. My favorite, "God, That's Good!" was shortened.
I just went to the site and it's now fully loaded! :inlove Wallpapers, pictures, AUDIO CLIPS!!!! I'm VERY happy with Johnny's voice! I love the "Johnny Depp Studio Session" :inlove It sounds like they didn't have to go in and "work" on it, like they did with Emmy Rossum in POTO >.> Helena sounds a little weak, but I think that's only because I'm used to Angela Lansbury's loud voice for the theatre.

OMG I'm such an ASS for not knowing about this!!!!! WHEN DID DEPP STAR IN SWEENEY TODD???!!!
*must find out moar*
edited to spaz - omgomgomgomgomgomgomg... I love SWEENEY TODD! AND TIM BURTON!!!!!1111
Just saw the trailer - not bad AT ALL!!! Depp doesn't have all the vocal range that role calls for, but I think his acting makes up for it - my only concern is... Helena Bonham Carter sings?

I am a big fan of Tim Burton. I still love Beetlejuice and Nightmare Before Christmas.
And now he's going really Morbid with his newest Christmas masterpiece. I can't wait to see it.

Like I said, on the official site they have audio clips (("Epiphany", "A Little Priest", etc.)
I think Johnny sounds great as Sweeney. Better than Hearn, at least >.>
I keep watching the "Johnny Depp Studio Session"...I love it! LOL! I hope they get more up soon...
EDIT:
Oh wow! I just checked out some of my old musical message boards, and I got this AMAZING link!
http://www.iesb.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3789&Itemid=99
Clip 1- Sweeney todd now
Clip 2- My friends
Clip 3- You Gandered at my ward
Clip 4- The Contest (Sasha's high note...BRILLIANT!!!)
Clip 5- How long till Pirelli gets back
Clip 6- Epiphany
Clip 7- A little priest
Clip 8- Not while I'm around
Clip 9- Pamper you
Featurette 1- The Cast
Featurette 2- The Vision
Featurette 3- The History
Behind the Scenes Footage Part 1
Behind the Scenes Footage Part 2
Finally, a movie to get my butt back to the theatres.
I listened to some clips of Depp's singing and while I was surprised and impressed considering he apparently had no vocal training before this, I felt that he didn't do Epiphany justice. Enjoyed his rendition of My Friends, though and I am unsure as to what to think of Helena Bonham Carter (her singing, not her).

*Screams like a little 4 year old on Christmas morning*
4 Golden Globe Nominations!!!
Best Actor, Johnny Depp (musical or comedy)
Best Actress, Helena Bonham Carter (musical or comedy)
Best Director, Tim Burton
AND Best Picture!!! (musical or comedy)
I think Tim is a shoe in to win best actor at both the GG and the Academy Awards. He won the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures award for Best Director for "Sweeney Todd", and the NBRMP have been around longer than the Academy Awards.

Welp, I'm off to see "Sweeney Todd" in about 20 minutes! GOD, I have been waiting 4 years for this movie (that's when I became a fan of the stage show) so I am UBER excited! And I'm bringing my "Mrs. Johnny Depp" hand-bag with "I ♥ Johnny" button on it :love
Expect a review from me! :D

Instead of writing the usual review you would read in a magazine, or the newspaper, I’m going to write what I did and did not like about the film.
And yes, I will be comparing it to the stage show I saw in 2005 at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle. It wasn’t a touring production, but a production that is sponsored, so it’s like it is a touring show.
LIKES:
1. The overall quality of the film was amazing. Very dark, very interesting that before Sweeney was sent to Jail, his vision of London was bright and happy…but then he gets back, and it’s dark, ugly, gritty, etc.
2. Johnny Depp can SING. OH MY GOD. And he can sing AMAZINGLY. I didn’t think he could hold out some of those notes, but he did, and he didn’t disappoint. And “Sweeney Todd” is a hard score to sing. He was better than the guy I saw on stage, as well as George Hearn and Len Cariou. I will be listening to "Epiphany" every night before I go to bed.
3. Helena Bonham Carter. At first, I thought she was just cast because she was Burton’s wife, but she was very perfect for the part. It was kind of different, because I’m used to the morbidly humorous Mrs. Lovett (like the one I saw on stage) and Angela Lansbury. But Carter was serious morbid, LOL. I SO want to be her for Halloween!
4. “By the Sea” was SO endearing. I loved how in all of Mrs. Lovett’s “happy family” visions, Sweeney just sat there staring straight ahead with a scowl on his face.
5. Who could have played Pirelli better than Sacha Baron Cohen, I do not know. Everyone in the theatre laughed when he made his entrance, and his high note during “The Contest” was so funny!
6. The entire cast was amazing, but they didn’t really stand out like Depp and Carter.
7. I'm so glad that they didn't add in the part where the Beadle kills the little canary that Anthony gives to Johanna.
DISLIKES:
1. I didn’t like that the beggar woman had a smaller part. I especially didn’t like that she didn’t great Sweeney and Anthony at the docks and say to Sweeney “Hey, don't I know you, mister?" because it sets up the end.
2. I didn’t like that “The Ballad of Sweeney Todd” was left out. I didn’t like that “God, That’s Good!” wasn’t as it was in the stage production, because, honestly, that’s my favorite song of the entire show. I love ensemble pieces, what can I say?
3. I wish that they would have kept in the scene where the guy walks in for a shave, and before Sweeney can kill him, the man's son walks in and watchs his father get his shave, and Sweeney doesn't kill him. I liked this part because it showed that Sweeney still had a human side to him and a human heart. Instead they just replaced it with a quick "the guy gets shaved, as his wife and daughter are sitting there." as he is singing the "Johanna" reprise.
3. I think the fact that we had to see Mrs. Lovett buring was a bit much. It was very laughable.
4. The ending with Toby just leaving. What made the ending creepy on stage was when Toby went back to the meat grinder and just kept grinding the meat after killing Sweeney.
So, there you have it. If you haven’t seen the stage show, I would definitely recommend going to see this movie. If you have seen the show, go see it anyway, but don’t expect everything to be the same.
Oh, and guys…be prepared because ANOTHER one of my favorite musicals (my 4t favorite musical actually) is hitting the big screen…MAMMA MIA!!!

Kyaaa that sounds amazing Lady O. I needs to see it when it hits the theatres here, to be exact: 24th of January..WOOT.
I watched it on opening day and was very pleasantly surprised. I thought Depp's singing was fantastic. The singing in general exceeded a lot of my expectations. And I thought Sacha was the perfect fit for Pirelli.
For those who have seen it: what are your favorite songs?
I really enjoyed Epiphany, in spite of my initial impression of it. and Little Priest was another favorite of mine.
Lady Orihime
12-24-2007, 11:11 AM
In the movie, my favorite songs were "My Friends", "Epiphany", "A Little Priest", and "Johanna" (reprise)
There probably would have been two more, had they kept in "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd", and the original "God, that's Good!"

Wooow, I just downloaded a shabby version of Epiphany and Johnny CAN sing:wtf

I love Johnny Depp!! :love:inlove:love He's my favourite male actor! I especially loved him in Sleepy Hollow, Edward Scissorhands, From Hell, Pirates of the Caribbean and as Willy Wonka! :love Together with Tim Burton, they're invincible :p
I'm very curious about this new movie now. :3
Edit:
I actually only possess DVDs with Johnny Depp miraculously +blush+ :o

I would recommend watching the 1982 stage production DVD, or listening to the original Bway cast recording (NOT the one with Patti Lupone), but...I have a feeling you might find those boring XD
So, you can get the deluxe edition of the movie's soundtrack:
http://www.amazon.com/Sweeney-Demon-Barber-Street-Deluxe/dp/B000X4OVLM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1198513362&sr=8-1
Or if you just want a taste of what it's like, get the highlights:
http://www.amazon.com/Sweeney-Soundtrack-Highlights-Stephen-Sondheim/dp/B000WEDAEM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_7?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1198513362&sr=8-7
Or, if you just want to read up on it, you have two choices:
http://www.amazon.com/Sweeney-Todd-Barber-Street-Canada/dp/0199543445/ref=pd_bbs_sr_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1198513362&sr=8-6
This is the official companion to the movie. Kind of like how you would get a souvenir program at a musical; information on how the movie was made, cast interviews, etc.
http://www.amazon.com/Sweeney-Todd-Barber-Street-Canada/dp/0199543445/ref=pd_bbs_sr_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1198513362&sr=8-6
This is just the book of the movie.
Whatever you choose, I hope it only makes you want to see the movie more! :yay

Ahh it looks really scary and I still kinda wanna see it. I mean Johnny Depp. Is it really bloody?
Lady Orihime

Very bloody. Probably more bloody than "Sleepy Hollow" :rotflmao
Sora Chan

Ok actually blood is not the problem. Does it actually show him slitting peoples throats and such?
Lady Orihime
12-27-2007, 04:43 AM
Yes. That's basically why it's rated R ;)
MPAA: Rated R for graphic bloody violence.
Some of the slashings are quick, and some aren't.

I enjoyed this movie. The theater was much too cold, though, since the heat was broken and we were in the middle of a snowstorm...
Johnny Depp's singing voice sounded a lot like his speaking voice, but it wasn't bad.
