I'm going to campus soon, and word on the street is that it's going to be VERY difficult to download stuff, since they're planning on blocking bittorrent and whatnot. So I turn to the forums for help. I've heard proxy servers can get you past that, but if used for downloading, they're REALLY slow. What other methods are there? How would on connect through a proxy server?

proxies only work for ddl, which in this case you're better off using ur campus internet. cus ur still traceable anyway.

as for me, i use irc and an SSL connection so my connection is always secure.

i've tried out these methods which you may wanna try too.

1) private ftp from the fansub group
gawd this is the best, but i've no affiliations with them anymore

2) rent a server at a data centre
use it to bittorrent for you, and u dl off your own server. just as sweet as the ftp option. unfortunately, i don't have access to the server anymore.

3) get your friend to dl for you.
sounds simple enough

4) narutofan plus and other paid options
haven't tried them before, so i can't comment

5) streaming sites
if you don't mind lower quality

You can actually rent servers? Eh, I'm still not big on paying for stuff. XD

Private ftp sounds pretty good...would the groups usually have their ftp connection info on irc or something? And what if I want to download movies via bittorrent? Is there any way to bypass a school's security system?

My friend suggested using SSL...how exactly does that work?

the private ftp is only for staff and people who have helped them before. so if you want anime, fansubbing is the way to go.

bittorrent in sch is really dodgy imho. they get suspicious once you open too many connections. its still possible, but i don't recommend it.

SSL only works if your other party has SSL enabled too, so u need to check up on that too, otherwise you'll just be as naked as the streaker on campus.

They don't really look for bit torrent streams or the file trading itself they look for large file transfers over their network at least that is how my school does it. They just back trace and they usually can do that easily. A safe bet would be to get a laptop and try to find a wireless access point. That way they can link you to a hard line and maybe connecting threw torr or some other onion router setup.
