Oh, yeah! I know! Bokura Ga Ita(We Were Here)! This just screams sadness. And reality.
And okay, I've just saw Grave of Fireflies and it's really heart breaking, and it made me misty eyed. WAR IS BAD. :(

I found Blood+ rather tearful in parts. Some parts just made you ant to burst open a river with the way things were said esepcially the Saya and Kai parts.
Planeswalker

The latter part of Mai Hime. It really is the most emo thing ever. I mean there are some Trigun eps that made me teary, but Mai Hime is definatly more sorrow invoking.

I found Blood+ rather tearful in parts. Some parts just made you ant to burst open a river with the way things were said esepcially the Saya and Kai parts.Blood+ wan't particularly tear jerking, what really hit me was that you knew what was going to happen in the end, but you were powerless to really do anything about it X__X

I don't think there are really any shows, for me at least, that have an overall feeling of sad. But there are some moments that stand out.
The end of Air, Blood+, Death Note, SaiKano, Beyond the Clouds, The Promised Place.
I guess most of the time, I'm just sad to see the show end and not sad because the show made me.

FullMetal Alchemist, This story is so heart warming and sad, it brought tears to my eyes. Ending of the Anime could have been better, and so could the Movie.

Gundam SEED. A friend recommended the series to me, and I just finished watching it recently. It was pretty depressing throughout, but--my gosh--the final few episodes made me bawl my eyes out. ;___;
I haven't seen very many other sad series--one reason may be because they tend to make me depressed over them for a time. xD However, I do feel that it's a bit ironic how the stories which trigger a large emotional response (whether that be sadness or joy) are usually the ones which I end up loving the most--that if a story, for example, moves me to the point of tears at one point or another, I am more apt to call that story a "good" one.

Grave of the Fireflies - sibling love! cute little girl! war! sad must be an understatement
Kenshin OVA - it's so sad that I feel cheated when finding out in the manga that Tsuioku Hen isn't as serious as the OVA. but Seisou Hen is just plain tear-jerker.
Saikano - not so much sad but depressing. my brother calls this anime "suicide driver".

I was depressed for a long time after watching Chrno Crusade...
I am so into sad anime. But so far, the saddest among them, IMHO is Seisouhen. The OVA of Rurouni Kenshin. It's just so sad. :cry
Its been said, but the Kenshin Ovas were really sad.
Other sad parts of other series:
Gantz- when certain characters died:(
Hikaru no Go- when Sai disappered
those scenes were pretty sad too
Zikky
11-17-2007, 03:19 AM
Hikaru No Go- when Sai disappeared, gah I almost forgot about that xD
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann- Urgh having Kamina and Viral as my two favorite characters really hurt me in that series xD
Naruto... for just the Zabuza arc, man I cried so much during that xD
More recent: Slam Dunk- the final 20 chapters really got me going because I realised that there weren't enough chapters left for another game, and I didn't want them to lose after all they went through xD

Definitely Chrno Crusade, it was so depressing, and I cried too much. I probably haven't seen a sadder ending, not only because of deaths in the series, but also because of the overall ending, it kinda' left me hopeless. I was pretty angry too,
'cause there was no happy ending whatsoever.Ah.

Fuyu no Semi.
Only three OVA episodes, but oh my god...the first one gets you to the point of "I love these guys, please let this work out..." the second one is a sickening sort of slide into what is obviously not going to be a happy ending, and then the last one...oh, I cried so much at the end...
There's bits of Death Note as well - episode 25, the finale, and the episodes with Naomi Misora and Ray Penbar.
Elfen Lied is another good'un

Grave of the Fireflies (hotaru no haka) would be my number one sadest anime. Chrno Crusade was very sad towards the end too, but why Fate/Stay? IMO it was a befitting end, which wasn't so sad, I mean she has fulfilled her dream.

kimi ga nozomu eien... I HATE THAT ANIME GAH STUPID BRAIN F-ING >_< It made me confused and frustrated and even shed a tear or few at some point.. T_T
Out of the 100+ episodes there are... ONE episode of Inuyasha made me cry. *embarassed*
Neon Genesis Evangelion pretty much tore out my heart and ate it, Fruits Basket was very depressing at some points in the manga, annnnd... That's all I can think of right now. :x
Ninira
01-17-2008, 06:12 PM
Gunslinger Girl. It was so depressing. I think I cried during the last couple of episodes, even when the girls were singing the New Years in on the last episode.
ALSO the Kimi wa Petto live drama. Especially the part when
Sumire and Momo spent their last day together and they wouldn't say goodbye to each other because of awkward circumstances on the night before.
I'm glad it didn't end sadly...
Wolfs rain made me cry :( so thats the saddest one i ever watched, err spoiler! xD
i hated it when touboy died because he was so cute.. and when blue died it was really sad too. pretty much when all of them died, actually.
/spoiler
the last 20 chapters of fruit basket are depressing for me, and the chapters and episodes in inuyasha where inu and kag are angsily in love and depressed always makes me sad. (inuyasha is my second fave anime, its old school but rumiko takahashi is a great writer)
hmm what else..
blood+ ending made me very sad, then happy [= in fact, all of blood+ made me sad. its a very tragic anime, but definetly a classic.
eureka seven was pretty sad at some parts, too.
the 2 FMA movies were sad
OH! and i almost forgot deathnote. that one had me thinking about what happened to certain people all depressed for days on end.

the most emotional and life changing anime. i think its 12 episodes of heart smashing cruelty...
lots of girls betrayed by the guy they all love?
(last episode made me feel like getting up and stabbing someone...)
teaches you lessons about life (not many animes actually do this...)
:'( thinking of it makes me whimper... and ima pretty macho person... honest >.<

Don't know if it's been said, but SaiKano was the saddest anime for me. I bawled most of the time, even though I could care less about the characters, haha. Well, except Chise.
AND BLOOD+ WAS DEPRESSING. OMG. Everyone needs to watch it, even if the premise doesn't interest them. I watched the show a little when it first came out but I dropped it for awhile, and then I watch 40+ episodes in ONE GO. I was sobbing constantly. HA.
And I have never watched Wolf's Rain before, although I've heard so much about it. Perhaps I should watch it too.

Old fashioned style of art, but Fantastic Children is definitely something. I was so overwhelmed that I couldn't help getting goosebumps and teary-eyed. Blood+ was sadistic to the end.
I want to watch Grave of The Fireflies though. That will promise me giant she-male tears.

Added on my list:
The epical love story of Romeo and Juliet made me cry :cry.
Although I already knew how it would end, I tried to see how the animators 'animated' Shakespeare's greatest tragedy.
Yup, a sucker for love story and tragedies. ANgst, ANgst.

hmm not a lot of anime that i consider to be "sad", per se.
Neon Genesis Evangelion was just a mindfuck, wasnt really sad to me.
Escaflowne had kind of a bittersweet ending, you felt sad but happy at the same time.
If anything i'd say FMA was sad. All their struggle was for nothing really. Good thing the manga isnt turning out like the anime!

The best shows are the ones that can make you :rofl and :cry
For me that'd have to be (subbed NOT dubbed)
Fruits Basket (one of the most heartbreaking series)
one time in bleach (2nd ep with Orihime and her brother)
One Piece (many many times did it make me laugh and cry)
Trigun (watch it subbed, if you haven't already. Blows the dub away. If not
do it to hear Aizen as Wolfwood lol)
I haven't seen all of Chrono Crusade yet, but since a lot of people brought it up I want to watch it now.

I just finished watched Bokurano. There were points in the show when I had to stop it, and just walk away. It made me think a lot about death, and the people that you leave behind. For being kind of mecha, it's very emotional, and I would highly recommend it.

I haven't seen Grave of the Fireflies, I guess I'll have to watch it. The only other ones that seem to be mentioned a lot are Chrno Crusade and Blood+. Blood+ had some sad parts, I suppose... The saddest part for me in Chrno Crusade was when the butler died - so I was sort of numb for the rest of the series. xP
Certainly ep 22 of Code Geass was sad as well. I think I built up a tolerance or something because most of the ones I just mentioned I've seen more recently. I think the only anime that made me cry was Last Exile when Luciola died - but I'm guessing that's because it was one of the first series I watched the entire length of. And probably the music that played during the scene. xD

Hmm...I haven't watched many anime, but Elfen Lied was pretty sad. At first I thought it was just a violent show full of blood, but a lot of it was sad. There is one part I refuse to watch every again (due to animal cruelty, it was hard for me to watch even though it's just anime), and a lot of the characters have sad pasts.

Oh yeah I forgot about Elfen Lied. That was really sad. I know what scene your talking about, I had to skip over it b/c I refused to watch it.
i think the most saddest scene in elfen lied is when she kills his little sister. cuz she tries to warn him and he slaps her and say something mean to her. then she die and if you notice she have tears in her eyes...her last memory was of her brother hating her.

I think I say this everywhere, but - the anime which made me cry the most (as in I couldn't stop bawling) was Grave of the Fireflies.
When his sister died and he had to put her into this shoddy wooden box to bury her, I burst into tears and couldn't stop crying until the end of the anime, and still cried about like 20 mins after it ended. I can't remember having cried that much in my entire life. Until Ice Age. Which was not anime.

Actually, there was a scene in Sailor Moon that always got me sad. In Sailor Moon S, when Haruka and Michiru went together to retrieve the pure heart crystals, only to be tricked and find out that they themselves are the carriers... And then Michiru is "killed", and Haruka "kills" herself...
There's something about those two. Their relationship makes anything that happens between them really moving to me.
The scene where they faded away in the final few episodes was also pretty sad... :(
I also found Elfen Lied to be really sad. Mostly the scene where...
...Chief Kurama died with his daughter... You could really feel how hard it was to make that decision. After saving his daughter from being put to death in the beginning, she was still condemned in the end...

No argument there; After all they had been through together, Usagi has to end the battle the same way she started out; alone.
And yeah, that's one of the times I was talking about. Where they were reaching for each other's hands as they were fading away... Man, I miss watching Sailor Moon. :cry

it doesn't take much for me to cry, really. I never watched suuper sad animes, but the ones that have made me go teary-eyed at least were:
brace for spoilers, kay?
Full Moon wo Sagashite is the saddest one for me ç_____ç
Death Note
(L's death just caught me unprepared, I sulked in a corner for hours...then Light...it was so desperately tragic for me, because I'd do the same thing in that situation: say 'I don't wanna die' over and over ._.)
FMA
(omg Hughees Ç___Ç
I was to shocked when he died, but at the funeral scene where his daughter is asking why are they taking her daddy away... :cry)
Tsubasa, when Sakura wakes up in the earlier episodes, looks at Syaoran and asks 'Who are you?'
Naruto has some pretty sad scenes too..
so does Bleach :p Kaien's episode for example..
the movie of .hack got tears in my eyes too, but it's more moving than sad
do Jdrama count? all I've watched are very sad (drama...:p) but I recently watched Hana Yori Dango and it's just... >.<~~~~
also, the whole story is not on the anime, but a real tear-jerker for me is Fruits Basket
whenever I watch the episode about Hatori's past or when Tohru discovers about Kyou's true form... :(
I cried like a baby reading the manga xD

Shingetsutan Tsuki Hime. Dark anime with a sad ending, I'm crying so much...
DeathNote. just like everyone said; this great anime is magnificently sad to me, plus with a tragic ending..hikz..
Maria-sama ga Miteru.I don't know, I find it sad in some scene, enough to make me cry..
Kiba. It's sad that zed mother's crazy because of the spirit, and to know many betrayal behind at the end, make me cry
Fate/Stay Night. Happy/not happy ending; but I cry though...
Chobits. When Hideki runs along the town because chi's battery is almost out; when nearing the end that confession is making me cry..
Samurai 7. Not a sad story but I cry to know at the end the'll parting, some kind of like that..

I don't know if there is an entire anime that fits into the saddest anime role for me. There are some scenes and episodes from several episodes of different anime. Like Trigun and Fullmetal Alchemist, those had moments that very nearly had me in tears.

Yes, I agree. Finding out the true bad guy in Noein was really sad.
I found "Now and then, Here and There" the saddest one though.
Child brutality
Child rape
Child prenancy
Children forced into war and labor
It's all about rape and pillage.

Neon Genesis Evangellion... that waz a real tragedy that made me feel exactly a brain- f*ck (sorry 4 da f*ck word, but if you know the anime u'd know why I used it)
Neon Genesis Evangelion wasn't sad, just messed up, specially End of the Evangelion, I was shaking when the movie ended, it was something alright. I messes so much with religion that if u go into the movie without strong religious believes it will mess em up for sure

The ending of Wolf's Rain episode 27-30 , god, the saddest thing ever!
And Ginga Densetsu Weed, Jerome's death made me almost want to cry, I still get depressed watching episode twenty six when Weed wakes up and finds Jerome is dead. I'm an animal lover so GDW and Wolf's Rain really got me upset, especially Toboe's death, that get's me every time. :cry
