Yeah they did play well, Italy was unlucky on a few occassions, I thought they had scored a few times :zomg but in the end Holland deserved the win, they all worked really hard and didn't stop going even with the 3-0 lead. The first goal looked offside, unless you count the italian player who tumbled over the line, he hadn't officially gone off injured but I thought since he was off the field it would still count as offside ?_? Oh well they got 2 more so no one can take the win away from them. Still some tough matches up ahead though but I wasn't impressed by France or Romania >.>

You shouldn't bring past scores in here :p, from what i've seen from the last Euro competition, Holland's team is really different and a lot more efficient now and in my opinion if they eventually face Portugal it would be that kind of really tight game from the beggining until the end.

Germany and Italy were quite the disappointment this year.

With Van Nistelrooy, Robben and Sneijder leading Holland's offensive, we'll have a lot of problems. :scared

We have great players and a good defense, but it seems that sometimes they lose their concentration easily, which is good for the other team. And Holland don´t waste an opportunity, as we saw..

It is a group of death but perhaps France and Italy aren't performing that well. Holland, hmm well I watched the game against France earlier today and after their goal they just shut up shop:pbut amazing goals.

Van Persie's one looked like it was going wide until it hit Coupet's left hand in all honesty. Robben's goal was freaky, just blasted it through Coupet's hands. Rather unexpected from that kinda angle but the game was well and truly over. The last goal by Sneijder was brilliant, no chance for Coupet.

On another note, I'm rather annoyed that the Italy vs Romania game was a draw:yell! Damn it Mutu just had to miss that penalty:yell!!!! That would have knocked Italy out for sure:hm

I feel so empty now that the Sweden vs Spain game has finished. I'm still stuck in England (not flying back to Sweden until tomorrow morning) and no one here understands my grief. That last minute goal by Villa was so unnecessary and simply shouldn't have happened. All we would have needed to do was to wait for the referee to blow his whistle but instead we made a small, yet fatal slip up.

Oh well, I guess I should be grateful that at least we still have a chance of advancing, if beat Russia and some other scenarios that I'm not very familiar with. For that match, I'm going to be back in Sweden and wearing my yellow jersey. I'm sure the absence of that is why we didn't win this time. (Or not.)

Unfortunately, my worst fear is about to be realized now, though; Spain is the obvious winner of Group D now and if Sweden qualifies for the quarter finals, we are going to be up against Holland. This doesn't bode well at all, especially if the game has to be settled through penalties. The entire Sweden team would probably freak out since they are too scarred after what happened in the Euro 2004. (The press wasn't too nice about our team's downfall.) One could tell that the poor players were incredibly nervous, so no wonder some of them missed the goal. Actually, I vaguely remember reading something about Holland usually not being good at penalties, but perhaps winning against Sweden was a sea change for your team?

Well was satisfied with the Game Sweden vs Spain since well always enjoy the Spanish play.

Well the spanish players would likely have even more to fear from a penalty shootout in this turnament then even the swedish team has.
Look at Raúl His the All time top score of the national team, yet to my knowledge he haven't had even 1 National game appearance since failing the penalty against South Korea...(according to memory)

The Swedish side did a good job battling the Spanish team by allowing them little space.
Untill Villas goal it seriously looked like any typical euro-world cup with the spanish side having so much, but unable to deliver.

Have to say apart from the odd couple of games, the standard of the Euro championships have been incredibly high! Ive seen pretty much all the games so far, and Holland and Spain have definetly been the most impressive. (Sneijder and Villa have been awesome for their respective companies). Croatia are looking as a good outside bet, whereas France and Italy have been very dissapointing IMO.

Of course, as much as I love the way Holland are playing right now, my country (Scotland) as to play them in the World cup qualifiers. That could be a cricket score for Holland the way they are playing just now :cry

Spain will beat Italy, they have a lot more creativity and drive than the Italians do. The only thing I worry about with this match is that the Italians will cry their way to getting someone sent off, our appeal for a penalty, I can't stand the Italians and their crying! It's horrible!

To me this tournament is shaping up towards quite a finish, a Dutch-Portugal final might end up being a real cracker of a game, 4-3 Holland perhaps? At least with the type of defenses and offenses that those two have that might be in the cards.

Is it wrong to say about Germany winning with such low credit from the decisions took by the referee?, i just see a lot of influence that's all.
Germany went by efficacity, they've made a great game, by statistics they've humongeously lost, but that doesn't matter since soccer comes to results in the end.

I would like to point for Portugal's great playing at the end of first half and the whole second half, you guys can't label they're playing as chickens because Germany built up a like a fortress in front of their goal and portugal managed to go there twice.

I'm sad towards the defense, they got goaled twice in the exactly same way, they could have learn with the first. Ricardo's way outs are so bad that he could have worked on them previously.

Just a few facts i would like to point about the game decisions:

Portugal:

- Countless counter-attacking faults that have been ignored by the referee.
- One CLEAR penalty that even a 10 years old kid could tell, and not a team of bought referee's was able to.
- Fault during Germany's second goal when Ballack CLEARLY commits fault on Paulo Ferreira for getting space to goal.

Germany:

The whole game was benificient by the referee's decisions.

If you look at these even with how the game end up, the score would kind of switch. I say Portugal clearly deserved a draw or a win, then it doesn't matter if it comes to statistics, only results are applied.

A small point-out: Bastian Schweinsteiger was supposed to be out of this game as he got a direct red flag against Croatia that should absent him for 2 games or more. He played well in this game, but i'm sure you've seen a bit of his fair play towards others.
Is there anymore influence than this?.

With Portugal out, i hope Netherlands get to the final and win the competition because they're clearly the ones with more credit to do so.

My brother is a referee (though he's only with the junior and lower categories, but he knows the rules obviously), he saw the whole match and he said that it was clearly influenced. I saw part of the match and I said that it was influenced. You can be skeptic about that, but there are interests on an Italy-Germany final, that's because I fear next Spain's match. Influence does exist, but there are people who are still blind at that.

If I felt empty after Sweden losing against Spain, that is nothing compare to how I feel about Sweden losing to Russia and missing out on the quarter finals. This time around it's not emptiness, but utter shame and humiliation that is shared by the entire country. Russia had us on a leash and steered the game exactly where they wanted it, and we had no hope of getting the draw or win that we needed to advance.

Our non-existent defense was catastrophic, with openings everywhere, even though solid defensive play is our trade mark. The offensive players were bad too and just could never seem to get past the Russians long enough to actually do something or keep the ball in their possession for any significant amount of time. Admittedly, our star player Zlatan Ibrahimovic still had problems with his injured knee and there was a great uncertainty prior the game as to whether he could even play or not. In addition, some other key players were injured too and were definitely unable to play.

Yet, things should not have gone this terribly wrong and I don't know what happened to make our Euro 2008 journey end this prematurely; there is no question about Russia being the better team yesterday and that they deserved to win, considering their impressive and quick offensive play, but it still disturbs me that our team played so incredibly, incredibly badly and passively and was unable to effectively counter the Russian's pro-active play. This is not only because we have never lost against Russia before, or that they haven't advanced from any group plays since 1991, but because in all honesty, our team is not that bad that we should lose so easily.

Alas, Lars Lagerbäck's typically Swedish style of playing "nicely", with its strong emphasis on defense, didn't work against Guus Hiddink's aggressively offensive tactics. A lot of people have been calling for Lagerbäck's resignation, after what happened yesterday, but he has now publicly announced that he will continue to coach the Swedish team. There has been complaints about the team being too old and how Russia is an example of how crucial. However, I have to say that I agree with Lagerbäck that age doesn't matter, as long as the players are still skillful on a world class level. Therefore, I don't think the fact that we have the oldest team (and Russia the youngest) is the reason we lost. Rather, it's because the Swedish team was simply not behaving as itself and playing at its full potential.

Lastly, I fully realize how bitter this sounds, but that referee was seriously biased; he kept giving out free kicks to Russia whereas we hardly received any, despite all that fouling taking place.

Oh Riekie, compared with what Sweden has (not) achieved, only winning once is nothing to be ashamed of. The furthest Sweden has ever got to any tournament title is coming third in the World Cup of 1994. That was considered amazing by the Swedes back then and the team was greeted like the winners of the World Cup, and not the bronze medallists they actually were, upon their homecoming. Our team has never been good enough to win, so far, but we still cling onto hope, while simultaneously staying carefully skeptic. Despite the shame everyone in Sweden has to suffer through at the moment, we won't be able to stop ourselves from hoping again and fully supporting our team when the 2010 World Cup comes around. Dutch actually match up well with the Germans, this is because they are just as big as the Germans. The reason why Portugal lost is because the Germans were a more physical team this allowed them to frustrate the Portugal passing game. The Dutch while not as physical as the ze Germans, still are able to at least match up with them. As I see it the Italians are to wimpy to go against them, and the Spanish are too small (just like the Portugese) The Russians might be able to, but then again they are the wild card of the teams.

Strangely everyone who dominated the group and was the favourite lost in the quarterfinal sofar. One reason may be the reserve-team game in the 3rd group game from each team. Every team (Portugal, Croatia and Holland) didn't play like they played in the group stage.

Well I guess it wasn't to be. Holland were just outplayed in every facet of the game except set piece defense, I give the Russians all the credit in the world, they wanted it bad and it showed. Holland's lack of defensive quality showed, and they also showed a lack of offensive creativity.

Aint that just a matter of opinion? Germany were good in their first game, and absoultly average in the next two. Infact if not for Ballack they might not even have made it to play Portugal. On the other hand Portugal were a delight to watch, and played the first three games in a way it should be played (or at least IMO). Attacking, free-flowing football! So in a sense Portugal are perhaps the better footballing side...

That said you are right that Germany deserved their win on the night. I wasnt clear in my last post since I rushed the post as I was going out, but Germans outclassed Portugal on the night. Infact to put it bluntly Portugal were crap and Germant was on fire. Its strange but Germany "out footballed" the Portugese. Which makes me wonder why they cant always play that way (see 2nd/3rd games for evidence)

Same thing with Holland. Technically a better team than Russia yet on the night Russia out played them. On that showing alone, had Holland won last night it would have been a catasrophe, since Russia were easily the better team at that point.

Its just funny, how Portugal/Croatia/Holland, who IMO are more technically gifted teams lost out. Which makes me in a way agree with gab00n's comment. I can see Spain (more gifted than Italy again IMO) loosing tonight. But I hope not!! If Spains big players (Villa/Torres/Xavi/Fabregas/Puyol etc) get their act together, they should beat Italy (who without Pirlo and Gattuso are severly weakened).

How boring were the Italians? If ever a team can be described as boring, dull, unimagative and "anti-football" it was them. They represented everything I hate about a football team. And what makes it worse is that many of the Italians are actually technically gifted enough to play so much better than they do.

However, Spain were great. When Fabregas came on, he really drove Spain forward. Him and Senna in the middle were fantastic. And Casillas was of course great in goal.

So whos becoming a part time Spain fan for the rest of the tournament? :)
