I'm a born and bred Calgarian, although I do make constant trips to Vancouver since half my family lives there. XD
Saskatchewan power! No one can beat my province since we can see all our enemies coming from a distance of fifty kilometers, thanks to the topography being so flat. Plus, everyone knows that farmers are twenty times as strong as normal men. Our only weakness is Calgary, since it's stealing all our youth.
i'm canadian... Hoorah!!!!! =D

Welcome AnimeGirlPan, Peachilicious, Adam and Beee!!!!
Now that we have some members (Yay!!), I wanted to ask a couple of questions. How did you guys get into Bleach, and do you guys watch it on YTV?
@ AnimeGirlPan, Peachilicious, Adam and Bee Bee ... Welcome to the club ... you guys need to sing our national anthem before we fully accept you :p
Hah hah .... J/k ... glad to have you guys here :yay
Actually, YTV was the station responsible for gettin' me into Bleach (or most Anime for that matter) :p Watching it on YTV was fine by me up until they started showing re-runs, that's when I started looking around the net for more episodes ... and now I only watch anime online ^^; ... They still showing it on YTV these days? I should start watching the dubbed again ^^
Now that we have some members (Yay!!), I wanted to ask a couple of questions. How did you guys get into Bleach, and do you guys watch it on YTV?
I started with the manga a couple years ago around the time the anime started airing in Japan. I don't watch the anime, so I don't watch it on YTV. I used to watch YTV frequently when I was younger, but I hardly watch TV, in general, anymore.
Lady Scaper
08-21-2007, 03:43 PM
YTV is where I first got started into Bleach a few months ago. I had seom friends raving about it but I didn't get a chance to see it. If it wasn't for YTV I would have never gotten into Bleach. It gave me a risk free try I guess. They still air the dub. I usually tape it. They are at about episode 20 now. :D
I basically watched YTV for anime, and anime, but nothing else =P Like Jawz, it's one of the main reasons I got into anime =D
now I don't really watch the station anymore... many times, the TV I use make mysterious creepy noises (the kinda "cable not plugged" sounds) when I switch on YTV somehow...
Got into bleach before the dubs came out.. so it was kinda special watching episode 1 in dub. Didn't really got past ep1 though...I always forget and all xD

I got into Bleach a couple years ago through the subs. I've been meaning to check it out on YTV sometime but I keep forgetting. I think the only thing I watch YTV for now is Fairly OddParents and Spongebob. XD
And thanks for the welcome! :D

Well YTV had an ep on last night. It's the one where Ganju first shows up. I don't think I had ever seen the dub for that ep. It was pretty interesting.
I've seen that episode before I think, it was around there they started re-runs :p
Ichigo's voice still bugs me, but I think Ganju's VA did a good job with him, it was scruffy and raw ... which fits Ganju's personality just fine ^^
aaah ... now I remember, I've definitely seen this one before, coz' I remember dissing about the episode where they first met with Kukaku ... something to do with how they translated parts of the epi. ... they took away the comedy :(

So do any of you guys go to any anime themed conventions?
I have never attended any ... actually, I'm not even sure there are any in Vancouver ... except the one held in SFU by the students every year!?
Peachilicious
09-01-2007, 04:29 AM
I've never been to one either. I think there's one held at the university here, but I try to limit the amount of time I have to spend at school when I don't have to be there, so I don't go. :lmao

Ah, well I am a convention goer as when I first got into any fandom type activities I was dragged into going to one. I decided I am going to Anime North next year. It will be my first time going to any anime themed event. I am sort of nervous and sort of excited.

I thought I would give this thread a bump!!!
If anyone has been paying attention to the rise in the Canadian dollar it now appears to be at least a tiny bit more then the US dollar. Now I am sure you all know that still the manga is priced a ton higher here, then in the US. Chapters the gigantic book chain has not done anything about the price difference so far. I know of 2 places in my area (sort of) that sell manga at the US price (one has been doing it for at least 4 months). Unfortunately they did not have volume 21. I went by Chapters today and low and behold they had Volume 21 and the new Issue of Shonen Jump (Colour pages FTW!!). Since I was peeved about the price difference I kindly asked a person if Chapters is ever gonna sell any of their manga at the US price since other places are doing it already. She said that Chapters is working on it and she will let her manager know about my concerns. She also gave me a $5.00 gift certificate since I complained so nicely!!! :yay So I bought volume 21.
So if anyone buys the volumes (or Shonen Jump, I am gonna have to start), complain to Chapters nicely and maybe they will help you out!!! :D
I've never bought manga from Chapters before, bought all my anime/manga stuff from a place called Sakura Media : www.sakuramedia.com . They have 2 locations in the Vancouver area, one in Burnaby, and one in Richmond. They also ship across Canada ... although it might not work out cheaper than Chapters in that case! I'm too lazy to zip around town for different stuff, so I just get all my anime needs in one location :p
wow jaws that sounds like an awesome place, though :D I'll make sure to visit that place if I ever go to Vancouver!!
mangas come at an alright price (but still same price than before i guess) but anime stuff is overpriced!!
I've bought mangas from chapters before.. but it was a good while before so I'm not sure if they did anything about the prices where I live xD

Lo, can I join?
I'm Canadian ^^'... Calgarian, actually, and not at all ashamed of stealing Adam's youths. More eye candy (no, not really, all the beautiful men seem to be amassing in the east) for me. Only downside is that the people are clogging up the streets and there're traffic jams every hour of the day.
I only go to my university convention, and that's alright. I swear only men run it, so we get a whole whack of not-so-good shounens showings and even some hentai at times. There's always the popular stuff, but those I get online anyways, so T-T... The occasional shoujo or good shounen makes me happy.
Lady Scaper

Welcome to the Canadian FC Starwing ( Oh great organizer of the pairing debate thread). My first convetion was mostly guys too and I worked a fan table that was run my women in their 20's and one lady in her 50's. To say the least we were very popular. Since that convention most of the ones I have attended have been mostly women. Farscape conventions have tons of (young) women. LOTR there was a con about 2 years ago and it was 70% women!! One yearly con I go to has usually 60% women but I don't know the gender split for Anime North.
So yeah here's hoping you find a more female represented con. Actually all the people who pimped Anime and Manga on me have been women until very very recently. (It was 3 fangirls that got me into Bleach for instance).

@Peach, Ooh! Peachilicious! And you're the one who promoted Taikoubou on 'most intelligent character' aren't you? Whee!
Yeah, I'm in UC. Did you visit Otafest this year/last year/before? I was actually cosplaying Rukia last time. Made my own sode no shirayuki and everything. XD
@Lady Scaper, oh there're a lot of girls/women going, but they sort of... just go along with with the guys in cheering for golden boy, psychic academy, and stuff. And trigun... oh my dear god, the crowds and cheers for that...
For some girls, that's all they know, so obviously the shounen-loving girls go more often.

Welcome Sybile and Stark Espada!! Stark Espada what part of Canada are you living in (if it's not too personal)?
Sybile is anime popular in Quebec city? I haven't been there (I have only been to Montreal and I am sure it's real different).
I just found out Anime North is having a Halloween Dance on my B-day!!!! I am thinking this would be a good oppourtunity to check out otaku culture since I have never been with a group of anime fans before. It's only 10 bucks at the door and I don't even have to dress up!! I am now kinda nervous though.

I was at Anime Evolution (that's the thing at SFU) last summer, as Ishida. Think I'm going as Luppi next year. You really ought to come, it's crazy fun :>

Aww, well that is what conventions are for!!! :) Anime North is next year so it could be something to try out.
I know after I went to my first convention (sci fi themed) I had a "My people moment"
EDIT: I have sucessfully convinced 2 buddies to go with me to the dance.
I wanted to ask, how did everyone get into anime?

Alrighty .... I'll check Anime Evolution out next year then, and perhaps be in the look out for a Luppi ;)
Oooh ... I just looove SakuraMedia, been buying stuff from them for years, most recent purchase will be 2 Bleach posters and a Kon plushie :love
I'm almost afraid to go near the store actually, and someone always have to drag me away from there, if not I think I'd have gone broke buying out the store ^^!
I wanted to ask, how did everyone get into anime?
For me ... it sort of evolved from a cartoon addiction to an anime addiction. Turned on the TV one day, had my first dose of beautifully drawn Japanese cartoon and BOOM!!! As I've said before, me getting into anime is mostly due to YTV, and Sailormoon was what got me hooked ( Yes, it was Sailormoon :p )
Starwing
10-26-2007, 06:49 PM
For me, I was always surrounded by it in Taiwan, but I never noticed. Then when I moved to Canada, I realized how badly I missed the Japanese stuff when all I had to watch were spongebob and stuff. Don't get me wrong, I like spongebob quite a bit, but the depth of the plotlines just doesn't match up.
Then GW came along and I loved it, and I first started this internet downloading and watching with Inuyasha. And I've been hooked ever since. Favorites right now are: HxH, Houshin Engi, and Bleach. And then there's my top ten, then top twenty, and I think I can pull out a top 100 if your eally want me to, because yes I'm that addicted and I've read that much. ^^'
@Peach,
I won't really encourage you to go, because Otafest has its faults. But it's all for the fun and tradition. And there's so much anime stuff around it's incredible. Most of it's horribly overpriced and you can get online and stuff, but still, I like the mood.
Bleach cosplayers? Quite a few, most were lazy and only slapped on the shinigami outfit. But we had quite a good looking Ichigo (and then we have a fat one). We had a fat Gin. T-T... And Hitsu wasn't bad. I still think Naruto is the favorite cosplay theme though. I didn't see any other Rukias other than me, but I did see a Hinamori.
We should start a Houshin Engi fanclub. We don't have one of those, right?
Peachilicious

I wanted to ask, how did everyone get into anime?
I first got into anime by watching Sailormoon and Dragonball on YTV however many years ago. ...I'm so original, I know. XD
@Starwing:
Hmm... maybe I'll go next year. It's in May right? Look out for Neliel if you go. ;) (I don't know why, I've never cosplayed before, but if I did I'd want to be her). I think I'd want to go if only to see the good looking Ichigo and the fat Gin if they're there again. XD
Nope, I don't think there's a Houshin Engi FC. I wonder how many people would join it though, since it seems like it's one of the "lesser known" Jump series. But if you do make it, I'll join (co-owner? :D) and pimp it in my sig.

YTV is wonderful, especially friday nights. The dubbing is not always horrible anyways. What I hate is the re-runs. Constant re-runs that suck my soul dry.
Sailormoon is a classic! And the fact that the mangaka is married to Togashi gives her extra credit. I love Togashi's works.
Poor Sybile, move to Calgary! Muahahaha. That's alright, you have us.
@Peach,
It runs for 2 days and you can buy outfits at the vendors. There's always a lot of gaming people. Sora from Kingdom Hearts is popular. And Cloud and we had a Sephiroth, but I think they were girls. We also had a great Sasuke, but he goes to ACAD (art school) and my friends who go there says he's creepy and wears that outfit in class. Ugh.
I don't know if I'm going to cosplay as anything this year. But if I get in the Otafest idol, I might. It's a first come first serve thing. I'd go as Rukia again, but I think that might be unoriginal and lazy. >< (Don't worry, I know for a fact that I'm not completely hideous at singing. I'm not great, but I won't break glass. XP)
HE fanclub... ah... that would be a dream. I just might one of these days, it might fall flat, but hey, you never know, right? Bleach is the only one of my favorites that has much Western attention. I can't find a forum for HxH either. *weeps*
Okay, Rick Mercer of "The Rick Mercer Report" and "Talking to Americans" just randomly showed up in my drawing class at the U of S, Saskatoon, today to do a gag for his show. When I woke up this morning, I had no idea I'd be seeing a celebrity's bare, white ass in a few hours.
Just thought I'd mention this here where people know who the guy is.
BTW I just noticed DN was on YTV =D a very pleasant suprise... haven't watched the sub (only read the manga) but so far It's quite nice =D
@Lady Scaper: I dunno about Montréal much but I bet anime is much more popular there than Québec XD; anime stuff is hard to find here and anime fans are pretty well hidden too.. (I feel so alone sometimes ;_; )
ahoyz!! tee-hee... now we're a big 2 people from "La belle province" here!! (from Montreal) xD
In Montreal it's probably quite a bit more anime/manga oriented, but even then the Anime love isn't all that present (..although there is quite a few people I know who watch/read bleach :D) <__< definitely not like in Vancouver or Toronto...

The channel that YTV comes on it YTV on Friday nights starting at 10:00pm. Sometimes they are few minutes off on schedule. I prefer to tape it when everything reruns at 1:30am and leave aroun 10 or 15 minutes extra taping so I have some buffer time, since they are never on the dot with broadcasting times.

About Rick Mercer, yes I loves him and he is hilarious. I am sort of into politics myself. If anyone is ever interested I could bring up a topic or 2. It's hard to find people who talk Canadian Politics.
About Bleach. YTV has gone into reruns!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!! Curses!!!!!! I thought they would keep going with the current eps as they were ended up only a week or 2 behind Adult Swim.
Is it just me or does anyone think YTV and Adult swim have some kind of agreement on broadcasting anime to prevent downloading online? Ever since that DeathNote non starter, I have always suspected it.
I am getting ready for Anime North and I am really looking forward to it. Is anyone else confirmed as going?

Yes, I will be going Anime North 2008... Going as Yylfordt Granz, L from Death Note and Aizen Sousuke Jr. on the last day. Look for an average midget Asian by the name of Brad C 8DDD

Is okay... Being nervous is natural consider there are so many people at the convention. Eek... I have no clue what my group is doing during the two days of the events. If you want to exchange pictures, we might have chance to bump into each other or something like that, or cell numbers??? 8DDD

I am totally down for political discussions XD
I'm really glad to hear that you're interested in Canadian politics, there's far too many apathetic, disinterested citizens in this country who don't pay attention, which is a shame because I think Canadian politics is really interesting and that as citizens we should be engaged... blah blah blah *gets shoes thrown at her*
Anyway, I'm happy to hear that you're into politics as well!

politics is interesting for sure. I think Harper is more interesting than his predecessors for some reason. At least, he makes decision even though they may be controversial

I feel the same way as you. I will try to be careful about politics though since I don't want things to get to firey. Umm.. what do people think of Bill C-10? If you don't know I will give an explanation in a later post.
Ok well first I'll will trade numbers with you Brad c closer to the date of Anime North. Also will you have costumes for all 3 days?
Does anyone have an shopping goals? I have a couple and I want to go to the skit competition, the masquerade and the cosplay chess.

Harper has certainly made some controversial decisions, but I don't think he should be commended for these decisions simply because they are controversial.
Bill C-10 is a great example, it's controversial but is it really the right thing for government to do? We should find it troubling that a bunch of "representatives" from the Heritage and Justice departments want to decide what is "suitable" for tax credits. While it's not direct censorship, much of the Canadian film and television industry depends on government subsidies, so if productions that are deemed by the Heritage Minister as "offensive" don't receive government support, many of them will be unable to support themselves, meaning that mostly films and shows that the ministries find "inoffensive" will be made. With that, this may push television and movie makers to censor themselves in fear of not receiving these tax credits.
Moreover, I think this bill gives the government of the day an unnecessary amount of power and influence over the Canadian film and television industry. Should the government (the current one and/or future ones) have some sort of moral agenda, then this kind of power would certainly give them the means to push its agenda forward and try to impose what they think is not "contrary to public policy" on to the Canadian public.

Censorshipping will be quite a problem and chaos particularly for films idustry... I might as well sit in front of the TV and watch Tree House with all the kids shows, if that's how far the censorship will go compare to amount of violence and lack of clothing musicians seems to be wearing these days. Harper recently hide all the media information under the nooks and cranny, according to CBC: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2008/05/02/cairs.html

Woot!! Brain triplets!!!
I feel the same way as you ShuiMei about bill C10. I even had an in depth convo with my MP. I knew knew more things about then he did. Dunno why he voted for it. Goodness. (He did not know that this whole c-10 thing did not apply to foreign film makers that come here to shoot (ex:Americans). He told me if that was true it would defeat the point of the tax credit for Canadian film. Well duh!!!)
Bradc I heard about the access to information thing too. Very very interesting. I wonder how long it will be til a vote of non-confidence.
I am loving this!!! :D

Hi! Firstly I have to say I'm not Canadian, in fact I'm Spanish, but next august I'll be going to spend the whole month in Victoria so I think is a good idea to know about where I'm going. Is anyone from Victoria or near there? I really want to know more about the place, I saw some photographs and I think is a really beautiful place. I've always loved Canada and I'm looking foward to the summer to go there.
Kisses from Spain.
