Already posted this at the Ichiruki FC and the Ishihime FC, but since it also involves Hitsumatsu I'm posting it here, too. :) I took out a few lines because they dealt merely with Ichiruki and Ishihime, but there is a lot of talk about these couples nonetheless, since my argument kind of rests on comparisons; if you don't like those couples, please ignore those parts... if you want to comment on the other pairings in detail, however, please feel free to come to the other pairing FC! :D We'll all be happy to hear from you!

Behind spoiler, because it is, er, long. :) And I mean LONG.

So! There are a couple of patterns in the Bleach manga (among a lot of others, of course, but since I think everyone has already discussed them ad nauseum I won’t dwell on them here :D) that I couldn’t help noticing, and I’d like to point them out and hear your opinons on the matter.

Premise: my main ‘couples’ in Bleach (the ones I’d like to see get together) are Ichiruki, Ishihime and Hitsumatsu (obviously). I also believe them to be the more ‘likely’ ones to have a positive resolution at the end of the manga (either clear or suggested). Why? Well, for a variety of reasons, but there are a couple of characteristics that all these three couples seem to share, and personally, I don’t think it’s a coincidence at all! :)

Because of this, I’d like to present my argument by talking a little of all these three ships; I present my apologies in advance to anyone who doesn’ ship either Ichiruki or Ishihime – I swear I’m not trying to ‘convert’ anyone, but my argument kind of rests on the comparison of these three couples, so I have no choice but to talk about them… :p

Well, then. Everyone has their own reasons to ship a couple or another, right? Usually this is connected with personal likes and dislikes, previous experiences, etc. Because of this, I think one of the most important things to analyze when one is trying to guess where the manga is going as far as shipping is concerned is the author’s own preferences.

So. Has anyone thought about Kubo’s likes and dislikes? :) I’m sure we all did. This are my main conclusions on the subject, but everyone is free to reply if they think I’m totally off course or something! :o

The first point, obviously, would be the similarities. I don’t mean superficial things like clothes, hair colour or the like, I mean deep, important similarities in either behaviour, personality, or shared experiences. Let’s summarize briefly.

With Ichigo and Rukia, we have literally tons of parallels (after all, they are the main characters :D): both of them felt guilty over losing someone important and sort of thought it was their fault, but tentatively made peace with it (with each other’s help :)), both are personally connected with the problem of human/hollow hybrids (Shirosaki, Grand Fisher) and are probably the only ones who know perfectly what Ichigo is facing right now and what he may end up becoming if he’s not careful (just look at Rukia coming back and getting Ichigo back to his senses in under five minutes :love), both have the tendency to take too much responsibility on their shoulders instead of accepting their friends’ help (or, in Rukia’s case, instead of actually asking for help), both felt unhappy and unable to act or change things before meeting each other, etc. etc. We know all about their similarities, I’m sure. :uhuh So let’s talk about the others now, ok?

Ishida and Orihime also share a lot of similarities, though they may be a little less obvious: both of them have lost a loved one in their family and were unable to do anything about it, both of them have felt powerless and useless, lacking faith in themselves and their abilities, both of them are dealing with an unrequited (only for the time being, I bet, in Ishida’s case :)) love, both of them seem to face the same kind of trouble at regular intervals, losing one problem only to pass it on to the other… no seriously! :D Think about it: first Ishida was fighting for pride, not protection, then he found his purpose in Soul Society when he was with Orihime (though I doubt he has completely realized it yet), and now he’s totally fighting for Orihime’s sake (‘We have to save Inoue-san!’, indeed)… Orihime, on the contrary, was fighting to protect in the beginning (Tatsuki, anyone? I know it’s hard to remember, but she was so totally cool then! :yell), then gradually lost her purpose as her love for Kurosaki-kun got bigger and bigger, until it seemed to swallow her completely… now she’s really lost; she sort of wants to be useful to Kurosaki-kun and to be noticed by Kurosaki-kun, but she doesn’t seem to remember what the source of her powers was, what made her FIGHT to begin with. Still, I know she’ll get her act together once she gets into protective mode again. :uhuh And like I said, similar problems can be faced more easily with the help of someone that’s already been there. :)

Third, Hitsugaya and Matsumoto! :D I seriously love those two, though I know not everyone likes this couple (which is all right, of course! But remember that Hitsugaya, thought he looks like a child, is still an adult, and his body will grow up someday! :))… anyway. Similarities! They’re so full of them I don’t even know where to begin! We have the obvious fact that both of them have had very important people (both childhood friends, even!) ‘stolen’ from them by Aizen and company, and that both of them wished to reach that person’s heart but were unable to do so (either because they were seduced by a masterful brainwasher, or because of reasons as of yet undisclosed – but still, the fact remains that both Gin and Hinamori basically chose Aizen over their old friends); both of them were basically betrayed by a person they loved (either romantically or not, but the concept still stands), while they seem to trust each other completely (both in battle and as a person), etc.

These are very basic lists, but I think they still help to point out an important characteristic that Kubo seems to love giving his couples – shared problems and, therefore, the ability to understand and help each other. I think it is quite touching, really, and also leads directly to my second point, because people who can understand and help each other, in addition to loving each other, are usually defined as healthy couples, aren’t they? :)

Well! Kubo LOVES healthy couples. Oh, he likes to portray all kinds of love, obviously (he is such a shoujo man! :D); we have the unrequited, selfless love that can still fill you with happiness because the point isn’t to get anything back (the dear Renji), the obsessive love that, though filled with good intentions, gradually destroys your happiness and your self-worth (poor Orihime-chan), the selfless and not-quite-realized one that is totally going to end up in unexpected happiness (Uryuu-kun! ;)), the totally selfless but doomed one because centered around a horrible person (sigh… poor Hinamori), the shy and timid one that can still give someone the strength to do something they’d never do otherwise or to change sides at the last moment and realize their own mistakes (Hanatarou, Kira), the slightly unbalanced one that can still find a little happiness because both of them are trying so hard (Byakuya and Hisana), redemptive love/not-fully-realized-love/I-still-don’t-understand-Ulquiorra-and-have-no-idea-where-his-story-with-Orihime-is-going-though-I-am-fascinated-by-it love, etc. etc.

But! For all that there are so many kinds of possible couples in Bleach, Kubo has done nothing but underline the importance of mutually beneficial relationships; because of this, the people that have been shown to gain only happiness and ‘profit’ from being around each other and that can be considered all-around healthy are most likely to have a ‘happy end’, in my opinion. Just look at what Kubo has given us up until now! :)

First, we have Ichiruki. :love People more eloquent than me have already noted how much Ichigo and Rukia have changed each other for the better, have changed each other’s other relationships for the better, have helped each other with their problems, have filled the empty place that plagued them before they met, have finally started to face their skeletons in the closet after their fateful meeting and are always, continuosly improving, improving and improving when they are around each other (most of all, they are so tremendously happy when they are together! :)). Other relationships, such as the one Rukia has with Renji, are also, in my opinion, beautiful and touching, but not completely happy or reciprocal. Renji did leave her alone for 40 years, and failed to understand her desires even though he had known her for so long; Rukia didn’t try to reach out to Renji on her own during those 40 years, wasn’t able to let go of her Kaien-related guilt thanks to his help. I honestly love Renruki, but from a literaly point of view, Kubo didn’t place it in the reciprocal/healthy categories, and as such it doesn’t, I think, have much of a chance to end up being canon.

Now, let’s continue on with Ishihime, shall we? :D Ishida and Orihime were beautiful in Soul Society (and not only in the ‘Oh, he/she is so pretty!’ that is often the only bright point in many chapters of this painful arc :o), but even before that, though it may have been subtler: Orihime knew about Ishida’s habits and behaviour and could correctly interpret it even before becoming a real friend to him, just as Ishida was always kind of awed by her optimism and enthusiasm, treated her with a strange sweetness and always, always remembered to thank her for everything she did for him (asking him to train with her and Chad, healing him, protecting him in their fall, etc. Compare this with Ichigo, who often ignores her and even forgets to thank her when she heals him :rolleyes:). They worked wonderfully with each other in Soul Society: Orihime was awed by his powers as much as he was awed by hers, she admired his strength and force of will just as he admired her inner strength and compassion; Orihime fought hard as nails when she decided to help him in his fight against Mayuri – she had to be knocked out to be taken out of there. Ishida didn’t exact his revenge even thought he could have – something had already changed in him by the time he had to give the ‘final blow’ (and in case anyone doubts it, it is considered a good thing in the context of the manga. Ishida wasn’t ‘too soft’, he wasn’t ‘lacking killing intent’, he was simply merciful. And Kubo always lets us know if something is good or bad, when he needs it to be unambiguous – just look at Orihime’s reaction of fear when Ichigo was suddenly covered by the hollow mask: by the characters’ expressions and Hime’ look of guilt we know that her fear was something bad, and not an admirable reaction. In the same way, Nemu’s confused gratefulness when she thanked Ishida for not killing her father was an obvious hint that our Uryuu did the good thing, thanks to Hime’s influence :)).

This couple is very balanced: not in the love department, of course (Orihime still loves Ichigo), but in all the other departments, yes, which means that, should the element of love be added on Orihime’s part they would adhere completely to Kubo’s favourite pattern. :cool:

Finally, Hitsugaya and Matsumoto. :) Those two are more marginal characters, and so haven’t been shown as much as the others, but every time we see them Kubo seems to underline again and again how well they work together and how they always help each other both physically (I mean in battles, of course :D) and emotionally; one example that always comes to my mind when I think of their relationship is the chapter (omake?) where Hinamori comes to Hitsugaya’s office to offer him her congratulations for his birthday, but at the end Matsumoto is the one who thinks of inviting him to the roof to watch the fireworks as a present, and it is Matsumoto whom he thanks, while Hinamori, despite it being Hitsugaya’s important day, is still completely fixated on Aizen (poor girl).

Hitsugaya also seems to feel a little uncomfortable in the Gotei 13 – his age and young-looking body are a sore point for him, and while he seems to have confidence in both his abilities and his status as a captain, he’d quite clearly like to be respected and maybe reassured about it; Hinamori doesn’t seem to understand this, and keeps calling him ‘Shiro-chan’ even though he’s told her again and again not to (and Kubo Tite has never given us reason to assume that he’s just saying that to cover up his secret enjoyment for her cute nickname – we have no panels where he smiles secretly after bursting out with his usual “Call me captain Hitsugaya!�), while Matsumoto jokes with him and knows how to make him relax, but is also always respectful of his position and keeps showing him again and again that she’s happy to ‘serve’ under him and that she trusts him completely as a captain. These are only small examples, of course, but they still clearly show us a positive and reciprocal pattern of behaviour that allows us to describe their relationship as a very healthy one. :love

I’m not necessarily saying that all these couples are in love with one another yet – personally, I think both Ichigo and Uryuu are in love with their girls but haven’t completely realized it consciously at the moment, Rukia is also more or less in love but doesn’t allow herself to think about it, Orihime… well, is still not there yet :o, and Hitsugaya and Matsumoto keep getting closer and closer but are too busy at the moment to even think of these things (though Matsumoto’s behaviour in some chapters made me wonder… like her sad/resigned expression when she went outside to allow Hitsugaya to talk with Hinamori, or the VERY understanding expression she had in the bath while Orihime was confessing how she felt powerless to help Ichigo and that ‘someone else’ would always be more important for him – after which she hugged the poor girl and told her that Ichigo needed BOTH of them – projecting a little, are we, Matsumoto? :uhuh).

In conclusion, these are nothing but a couple of patterns I’ve noticed, but I think their constant appearance in Kubo’s ‘successful’ relationships speaks volumes of the important role that things like similarities of life experiences and emotional health have in Bleach. :cool:

So… opinions, anyone? :uhuh

Oh, and as for the latest chapter... I must say I was very, very happy with it. :D Of the three 'main' couples I support, the HitsuMatsu pairing is the one I'm slightly less confident about, mainly for two reasons:

1) Hitsugaya and Matsumoto, though they're part of a very compelling 'sidestory', aren't exactly what you would call main characters, and so Kubo might give them an open ending, resolving (of course) their issues (i.e. Gin and Hinamori/Aizen) but leaving the future of their relationship to the readers' imagination.

2) Though at this point I think it unlikely, there's still the possibility Hitsugaya might 'get together' with Hinamori.

GinMatsu... no. I trust Rukia's feelings, which make me dub Gin as a villain - and while I expect some wonderful resolution to their feelings, some emotional scenes and maybe touching flashbacks to their childhood (God knows I'd like to have some insight into how exactly they grew apart, what the hell Gin was doing back then when he was a 'child' and in general have some more information regarding their relationship), I'm pretty confident we won't get a happy ending for that couple.

Hinamori though... I suppose there is also the possibility that she'll die, but knowing Kubo she will most definitely be redeemed/saved. Some people think Hitsugaya might be the one to 'save' her, but personally I think she will have to save herself and realize her mistakes on her own, maybe drawing confidence from her friends' trust and affection but ultimately making her own decisions (like Orihime). Hitsugaya has tried to make her change her mind already, it would be strange if he suddenly succeeded when he has failed so many times before... so I'm pretty sure she'll get over her obsession on her own.

The main question is... will she also realize that 'Hitsugaya is the one for her' (pardon the wording) once she gets over her obsession? Some people think so, and I'm totally ready to admit the possibility is there, but I find it unlikely. Why? Because while Hitsugaya has in the past (and even now) behaved in a way that might be interpreted as romantic, Hinamori has never once treated him as anything but a friend (well, apart from SS arc, of course... :D) - and a childfriend at that - never once seeming to see him as a possible romantic partner. So it's not just a question of 'going back' to their previous relationship - which I'm pretty sure will happen, though there might still be some problems there; even if they regain the mostly happy relationship they had before the Bleach timeline, this does not a romantic couple make. :) Especially considering the fact we have been shown that even their previous relationship had many inherent problems.

Anyway! :D I went off on a tangent here, but the reason for that is that I wanted to say this: while the first problem is still quite present in my mind, this latest chapter, while not cancelling all my doubts, mostly put my mind at ease in regards to the second one.

Why? Well, let me list a couple of things I've noticed in this cute flashback.

1) The 'waking up' parallel. We have two pages where Hitsugaya wakes up and finds either Hinamori or Matsumoto (you know, I just noticed this but - why do I call them by surname? :confused: I use first names with all the others... oh, well) leaning over him. Given Kubo's love for these kinds of parallels (just look at Ichigo and Rukia!) we are obviously meant to compare the two scenes. And what can we see?

Well, first of all, we know that Hitsugaya is troubled in both of them - he is not waking up from a peaceful slumber, he is shook awake by a nightmare and is (as we later learn) leaking reiatsu all over the place (we can assume he was leaking less of it with Hinamori, but the fact that his dragon was manifesting already pretty much assures that he was already having trouble controlling his latent powers). Hinamori however, even though she has known him longer and therefore should presumably notice any kind of significant difference in his powers or behaviour, doesn't see anything wrong with him and goes on to say goodbye to her other friends without lingering at all with little!Hitsugaya (which by the way, seems to me Kubo's way to tell the readers - see? He's just like any other friend to her! ;)). She doesn't connect well with him at all - she fails to notice his problems and as a consequence, she ends up not being of any help to him (and she doesn't seem to be particularly taken in by Aizen at this point in time, either... she probably begins crushing on him later on, when she starts growing her hair).

Compare this with Matsumoto's scene. :) She has 'known' him for less than what? Five minutes? And yet, she is able to follow his reiatsu home (well, either that or she asked around :p) and, most importantly, immediately notices his problems, talks to him about it and helps him deal with it. She understands his love for his granny, uses the right words to convince him and generally connects greatly with him from the very beginning, which his perhaps the greatest of indicators of Kubo's love for a couple.

2) Did you notice? I think I mentioned it somewhere in my previous 'essay', that Hinamori keeps referring to Hitsugaya as Shiro-chan even though he's obviously bothered by it, while Matsumoto always calls him captain and infuses her words with respect, as well as affection. Now, in this chapter Hitsugaya is not a captain yet, so obviously he has no reason to get offended by Hinamori's nickname, but he's shown lamenting his height while he watches the girl go, clearly bothered by the fact she doesn't seem to treat him as an equal, but as a little child. Not the greatest foundations for a romantic couple, are they? By the way, I'm always slightly surprised when people tell me they don't like HitsuMatsu because it seems 'pedophilic' to them, when Matsumoto has always been shown treating Hitsugaya as an adult and Hinamori treats him like a baby... wouldn't HitsuHina be the pedophilic relationship if it happened, then? :rolleyes: Height is not the final determinator of maturity.

Now, compare this to Matsumoto. In this chapter she treats him like a child exactly once - at the shop, when she's defending him from the merchant ('You think you can look down on a customer just because he's a kid?'). Understandable, of course - she doesn't know him and he does look like a child physically. Then, she turns to him to yell at him, but instead of the crying child she expected to see she comes face to face with an adult, reasonable enough not to blow up in the merchant's face for the wrong treatment he received and angry and mature enough to scold a grown woman for her manners. :D The second time they meet, she has already completely changed her behaviour towards him. She calls him 'boy' (well, she is older than him), but she talks to him like they're equals, explains to him exaclty what his problems are without mollycoddling him ('Your granny looks cold', 'At this rate, you're going to kill your granny soon with your power') and suggests he becomes a shinigami with confidence and a smiling face - she obviously has no doubts about his talent nor about his ability to attend the academy... she trusts him, even though they've known each other for so little time. :)

Oh, and just as a side note, the argument that Matsumoto felt his reiatsu because she's stronger than Hinamori doesn't really hold up - she's obviosuly not a vice-captain in the flashback (I'd say she's either still training at the academy or a non-seated officer in the Gotei 13, difficult to say), and given that eventually both she and Hinamori will become vice-captains, it stands to reason that there is not such a huge gap between the entity of their powers. :)

Alll in all, just some more positive parallels and healthy reciprocal influences to add to my list. :) Plus, instant connection baby! You know what that means! :D

i never noticed it but yeah, the parallels ARE really interesting. both of them start with a rather not so well hitsugaya yet hinamori is too caught up in her own world yet matsumoto is willing to spare time for a kid who she just met. of course you could argue that hinamori is still immature here, but i think it shows that matsumoto is a way better match for hitsugaya if they ever get together :)

Well, thanks for sharing your thoughts, mezzo_marianaio! I have to admit that i do not really see this as a romantic couple, however, i do love the captain-lieutenant dynamics there. Not to say that i dismiss this possibility that they will be a couple, but part of which this love of mine started for HitsuMatsu was due to the flexibility of their relationship.

First of all, the latest chapter conforms to what the relationship was all about - respect towards one another. Rangiku was first to recognize his power, while Hinamori, despite being in close contact with him for years, saw none in Hitsugaya. In fact, i think it was hurting him in a way when he saw that his growth was stunted in relation to Hinamori's - as if she had something that he had not. Rangiku saw his and realized his potential, and thus encouraged him to be a shinigami.

There was one omake chapter centred around HItsu's birthday, which Hitsu was stated as saying to Rangiku to 'keep on shining'. That was a cryptic line, but could be interpreted as an indication on how Hitsu thought of her - a shining person. Well, i would say that the two actually compliments each other in terms of fighting and teamwork. Hitsu will fight and prove his worth, Rangiku play tricks at times (feinting injuries when fighting Nakim, remember?). But they seem to understand one another, like a relationship between a surgeon and his nurse (bad analogy).

That said, HitsuMatsu rocks for being unconventional, hats off to Kubo.

Why do I like HitsuMatsu? I like 'em for being subtle. They so care for each other and understand each other so well. They are cute and sexi togheter. They are always by each other's side (yea they are captain and vice-captain so that's a normal thing but erm u know..:rolleyes:) and they are kickass when they are togheter. Kubo loves 'em too anyway. I mean take a look at this:

I particularly like Hitsu's blush, too, he looks cute and innocent. And I think the comic is pretty in-character. I really think that scene could happen: Matsumoto would try to cheer Hinamori up and hold her that way :-) I love how Tite Kubo has broken the cliche of the dumb blonde with Matsumoto. She would make a good couple with Hitsugaya.

I wonder if Kubo will ever make any of these romances come true. Maybe now he fears he's going to anger lots of his fans if he really stablishes one of the couples :-)

Well, either strawberry-blonde or golden-redhaired. Her hair is close to orange, but not enough to be a redhead (specially compared to Orihime and Ichigo). So you could say she has reddish-blond hair or golden-red one :-) Anyway, the bombshell epithet stays :D
