Well in the managa they say he is born with it. So I keep thinking it's like the soul equivalent of TB. Although there are anti biotics these days.


A Bleach buddy of mine did some research and mentioned that he could be patterned after a Japanese historical figure. That Ukitake could be patterened after this person (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okita_Soji), who died of TB.

My buddy also did some research and said he could have a drug resistant strain since he probabaly has been treated so much for it. (Dude is like 2000 years old.)

OH MAN JOINAGE!! :) I love Ukitake! I seriously find him the most glomp-worthy of any Bleach character.

Re: healing him out of his illness - I think it was mentioned somewhere canon (maybe his character profile?) that his hair turned white the day he got sick. I'd interpret that to mean he got sick when he was somewhat beyond infancy, unless he was a hairy baby. :) Thus, there is hope!

Anyway, Ukitake still manages to kick ass when he's not coughing, and I'm dying to see him fight again.

Just to share with you, I'm also active on Narutofan forums, and one of their kind and gracious members, Kumanri, translated a bunch of the captains' profiles from the Bleach Official Bootleg for us. Special Information (Top Secret)
Though his interest is in bonsai, the 0 artistic sense Ukitake has no idea where and how to trim a bonsai plant. He serializes an action adventure novel named, "Sougyou no Okotowari! (Rejection of the Twin Fishes!)" is about the protagonist, Sougyou, fighting to save villagers from evil. Sougyou's catch phrase is, "I will reject them!" and it is immensely popular among kids in Seireitei. Though its publication has paused before, once it makes an appearance again, the novel always clinches a place among the top 3 in popularity rankings.

I love how he fiddles with bonsai and sometimes messes it up. And his serialized story is adorably silly like him (a pun on his zanpakutoh's name, for heaven's sake...). :)

I have some random questions that might spark some discussion while waiting for our favorite white-haired captain (cough cough) to show up:

1) Is Ukitake entitled to wear a kenseikan like Byakuya? He's of minor nobility, right... or is that headgear only for the four clans...?

If you think he's entitled to wear one, why do you think he doesn't?

2) Does anyone have fanart of Ukitake with his large extended family? I want to see if how artists envison them. I imagine his family to be as goofy/cute as he is.

3) Lastly... can anyone give me a link to the omake where Soifon chains him to a post and takes his photos? Something with translation, preferably, but I'd take whatever you can give. I've just *heard* about this omake, never actually seen it before :(

Re: kenseikan - I don't know if Ukitake would be able to wear it, but even if he could, I doubt he would. He's all about approachability and friendliness, especially to subordinates, and the kenseikan draws a clear line between the common riffraff and nobles. (Which works wonderfully with Byakuya's "better than thou" style, of course, but I'll save that for a different FC. :P)

Poor Ukitake...he has no idea how appealing he is to the ladies! And probably the men too. I think he's very handsome, but his personality is what really appeals to me. I remember the first time I feel for him was when I realized that he was the first person to really give a damn about Rukia's situation during the SS arc. Unless you want to go into his fundoshi too. I think I'll stick with a PG-13 rated Bleach... :D

The haori make all the captains except Soi Fon (who has a belt) look tremendous. Byakuya practically doubled in size between his first haori-less appearance and later in Soul Society. Even Ken-chan looks surprisingly skinny in the recent chapters when he throws off his ripped-up robes.

So I have four songs for the Ukitake fan soundtrack,

1. Believe, by The Bravery: This song just fits, because they talk about fears and struggles and how you need something to believe in to keep going on. And this I thought was perfect in reference to Ukitake’s situation with his sort-of terminal disease and how he really treats the 13th division like one big family and how he really believes in them and keeps pushing on, despite his illness.

Sample lyrics:
I am hiding from some beast-But the beast was always here-Watching without eyes-Because the beast is just my fear, chorus: So give me something to believe-Cause I am living just to breathe-And I need something more-To keep on breathing for-So give me something to believe.

4. Dig, Incubus: It’s perfect. Again, this to me, describes how he treats and develops his squad to count on each other in general.

Oh I would LOVE to join this FC I have an little theory on Ukitakes zanpakutou I posted on another forum FC if anyone's interetsed it's this:

I think Tite was very clever about this. My take on Ukitake’s weapon is this

In ancient medicine (both Eastern and Western), the main paradigm was balance with in the body. The balance of the 4 humours (ie characteristics) of the body, which correspond to the 4 ancient elements of air, earth, fire, and water. Now if there was an imbalance in the body, ie an over representation of a particular humour etc this would lead to illness.

Now the humours are as follows:

Sanguine – associated with blood, the element of air, the organ the liver

Choleric – associated with bile, the element of fire, the organ the gall bladder

Now here's the thing about Ukitake's weapon. It is water based (ancient element) and he has an illness affecting the lungs (tuberculosis) that is why I think his weapon represents him, ie he has an imbalance of the phlegmatic humour...

So I have four songs for the Ukitake fan soundtrack,

1. Believe, by The Bravery: This song just fits, because they talk about fears and struggles and how you need something to believe in to keep going on. And this I thought was perfect in reference to Ukitake’s situation with his sort-of terminal disease and how he really treats the 13th division like one big family and how he really believes in them and keeps pushing on, despite his illness.

Sample lyrics:
I am hiding from some beast-But the beast was always here-Watching without eyes-Because the beast is just my fear, chorus: So give me something to believe-Cause I am living just to breathe-And I need something more-To keep on breathing for-So give me something to believe.

2. I am for you, Waking Ashland: A great general “Don’t give up, I know you, I’m there for you, I’ll save you” kind of song.

4. Dig, Incubus: It’s perfect. Again, this to me, describes how he treats and develops his squad to count on each other in general.

Sample lyrics:

I agree, of all the candidates, the one most suitable to fight Ukitake is Stark. He is like Shunsui, lazy and all. lol. It would be very interesting to see them fight each other.

Personally I think stark is going to fight shunsui because it seems every one is fighting there counter part. Now ukitake though in looks there nothing alike but I think barrgan will have something to do with water in his ability that is why I think barrgan will fight ukitake.

I think Ukitake and Shunsui are going to go against the strongest Espada together, whoever that is. :p Since they're always fighting together.. okay I don't know about 'always', but it seemed that way from the way Yama described them since their academy days, and Shunsui was in the plot to rescue Rukia from execution only because Ukitake was in it. So it just gives me the feeling they're going to go together. I could be wrong, but it's just my guess. :> They're like a Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

I have to agree with Ileenka--I felt like, if they fought, it would probably be together against someone. Whether it be Stark or some other very powerful Espada isn't too important.

But if they have to go one at a time, then stark espada is definitely right, and Shunsui will get to fight the guy who's similar to him and Jyuushiro will fight that old guy Espada. :cool:

I think that particular Shinigami's Illustrated was based on a Color Bleach (or "KaraBuri") omake at some point (most of them are), since I've seen some Kubo-drawn pics of the "Shinigami Mens' Association" floating around, but I'm not entirely sure.

Hope_Assassin, to answer your question: The KaraBuri are big two page color manga by Kubo, with comedy side-plots featuring Shinigami that were published in VJump. The book Ileenka mentioned ("Bleach Official Bootleg," aka "KaraBuri Plus") is a compilation of those omakes along with some character profile information for the captains.

Lady Scaper is right about Ukitake being lower nobility, and butterandtoast is right about him getting sick in Soul Society. I can't find the link right now, but in one of the data profiles of him, it says that his hair all turned white the day after he got sick. Personally, I think Kubo had to give Ukitake the TB to keep him out of the picture, or else people would have already shoved him into Yama-ji's seat. :) I sure as heck would want Ukitake to be my captain, or better yet, Sou-taicho!

Wow, moonflowers, I think you're so very right! :cool: Ukitake would make such an awesome commander and Soul Society would become a that much better place with him in charge... But the good guys who have the skill and will to change the world or a chosen society for the better are never given the right to do it and Jyuushiro is another instance of that. Dx

I didn't know that it was contracting that disease which made his hair white... Poor guy. Indeed, in every flashback, his hair is always the way we've always known it so he must've caught the illness really early on in his life. Poor Jyuushiro... :cry

I can't imagine what his hair would be if he wasn't sick.Moreover,I think that this sickness is not gonna have a fatal end-Kubo is not that type of writer.I mean,his style is different and he is killing only bad guys.(except Kaien but his death had a different purpose) It would be kind of cruel for Kubo to kill the vice-captain and then the captain.If he dies,there would be a new one and he wouldn't be accepted-many people love Ukitake.All we can do is hope he won't,but I doubt he will anyway

Lady Scaper is right about Ukitake being lower nobility, and butterandtoast is right about him getting sick in Soul Society. I can't find the link right now, but in one of the data profiles of him, it says that his hair all turned white the day after he got sick. It would not shock me at all if Ol' man Yama eventually gets killed by Aizen and, at the very conclusion of Bleach, Ukitake takes his place as commander. :D

Seeing as how Ukitake and Shunsui are the two oldest captains, and Unohana next, I think it would be safe to say our beloved Ukitake's next in line for the top seat. I can't possibly imagine Shunsui wanting a job like that. :)

Oh, and I popped in to point out that in this week's Shinigami Illustrated (Ep 171), from what I remember from the Color Bleach that this is based on, Ukitake's cell phone design contained a compartment for pills and another for water to take them with. :D

Ukitake has it great with that kind of creative style for a cell phone. :rofl On the more serious side though, I'm so proud of everyone around him that they try to make it easier on him and make sure he's well because he's definitely a huge asset to the Soul Society and losing him to an illness would be plain horrible. If Mayuri is such a genius, can't they appoint him to make up something to help Jyuushiro cure himself? I hate feeling as if he can drop dead from a bad seizure any moment and especially when he goes off to war, so I'd be very grateful if someone miraculously cured his sickness...

From what he said to Szayel during their fight, he's changed his and Nemu's bodies to run without internal organs, and he can turn his body into goo and regenerate it - if he can do that, he can almost certainly make someone's lungs work properly if he tried, it should be relatively simple compared to the stuff he's done to himself.

If I were Ukitake, though, I'd be a bit scared to let him try, even if he wanted to :eek:

That was what I meant when I asked whether Mayuri shouldn't get over himself and get at least ordered to help Ukitake because he is quite a monster when it comes to altering himself and Nemu, indeed, so helping someone with fixing their lungs should be a piece of cake to him. Too bad he'll never get over himself and even if he did, I'm not sure Ukitake would trust him enough to let him try to fix his health. :XD

The idea of Urahara being of help seems a bit more farfetched though, because while Urahara is a genius, he mostly works with gigai and the like and not spiritual entities' physical health so I don't think he could be of much help for Jyuushiro's case.

Ukitake is a great captain. He has earned the respect of everyone in Soul Society. I doubt that he will die. Kubo is not the type of author that kills off his characters, even the bad guys live sometimes, so hopefully Ukitake won't be the first to die, although, I do wonder why Kubo decided to give him an illness, I'm sure there must be more to it, after all, Kubo doesn't do anything without thinking it over......:D

I think he'd live too. The idea of the illness presented from the start makes me think it's intended for people to think "That guy is the first one to die" and then out of the blue he gets cured or something like that. I'm sure he'd play an important part in the war from now on. And I hope I'm right.
