I was just walking home from work and randomly thought of a thread for BA haha:p so here it is.
I was thinking, what does everyone else think of your country?
Like what do you all think about Australia? What do they think Australia is like culturally, how we speak, how we act, how we sound etc:p?
i think you have kangaroos and wombats as well as walking around with knives killing crocodiles. In all honesty I don't know anything about Australians other than they're no good at counter-strike.

Australia has kangaroos and wombats but "we" don't:p. Crocodiles are only found in Northern Australia where its warmer. Just a note:pThe word kangaroo derives from the Guugu Yimidhirr word gangurru, referring to a grey kangaroo.[5] The name was first recorded as "Kangooroo or Kanguru" on 4 August 1770, by Lieutenant (later Captain) James Cook on the banks of the Endeavour River at the site of modern Cooktown, when HM Bark Endeavour was beached for almost seven weeks to repair damage sustained on the Great Barrier Reef.[6]
A common legend about the kangaroo's English name is that it came from the Aboriginal words for "I don't understand you." According to this legend, Captain James Cook and naturalist Sir Joseph Banks were exploring Australia when they happened upon the animal. They asked a nearby local what the creatures were called. The local responded "Kangaroo", meaning "I don't understand you", which Cook took to be the name of the creature. So yes, haha, he means I don't understand. XDThe only thing i know about Australia is that fosters is australian for beer :p
I'm from America so I can only guess what people think of the US....:(Haha, yes, Australia's love their alcohol and beer. I think its stupid how there's such a big obsession with getting drunk though. Ridiculous. I don't drink personally.
Hmm, well, the government is to blame for a bad reputation but I do know of there being lots of violence, racism and all. Like I know for sure if I went into Alabama I'd get stares and be strung up on a tree. I know that the media is all run by the government and moguls with their own agenda. People's lack of knowledge could be attributed to that haha x3.
You can't really get an American stereotype though haha, everything nowadays is like America anyway that we're all becoming homogenus. Culture, Americans dominate worldwide and everyone knows what an American sounds like since they're on tv 24/7 haha.
Ooooh! Also!!!! Americans CANNOT impersonate an Australian accent, must be something with your tongues but I've yet to hear a proper Australian accent:p. When Americans try to impersonate the Australian accent it ends up being half British like on the Simpsons episode when they came to Australia!

Well ALOT of Amerians are very unhappy with our government and overall image of stupidity obesity and ignorance....There is alot of violence mostly because its more profitable to let people kill then it is to regulate and educate .. :( The average American generally isnt happy with THAT either....Yeah there are stil unfortunately a few places people of a few different races have to wath their back....the sane Americans oppose this..But there always seem to be just enough crazies who come out of the woodwork to make sure not much changes :(

Yeah, but all Americans ARE ignorant of the fact that they actually have to DO something to change the government. Corporate corrruption, FTW. Dear Cthulhu, they even drug us through the water supply. (I shit you not - fluoride has been proven to lower IQs, and countries that have stopped putting fluoride in the water supply have seen the general results of education as better than it was with fluoride. =/ gotta love capitalism.)
I lived in England, though I grew up as an American (American parents, FTW).
My parents now get excited when they see/hear references to Britain, and yet the whole time we were there, hey didn't accept one bit of the culture. >_> It's really annoying.
First off, I have no stereotype of Australia, except the accent. My father knew this guy, though, that ended everything he said in a question?
Anyway, now you have 2 countries to stereotype. =/ America and England.

Hmm what does America bring to mind? Off the top of my head: Amazing natural scenery, friendly people (at least the ones I've met so far), Las Vegas (I doubt any other country has a state dedicated to gambling :D), Hollywood, cowboy presidents (thanks George Bush Jr.), the country who defied / ignored UN's concerns about the Iraq invasion and who is now asking UN to foot some of the bill.
Thanks for the views on Australia, people. :love
What does Singapore bring to your mind? (me and .nez| were born and bred there)
Everyone else in the world hates America pretty much. I was traveling around Turkey recently, and you could really feel the anti-americanism there. It was pretty bad. Not that I blame them, but people have to realize its our government and not every person agrees with our government. Just like not every person in every other country agrees with theirs.

Well, for me, Singapore is all about order. I dont know why especially, but you often hear about those anti chewing gum bans, and its clean streets. I have a friend from there, and he always used to tell me how multi-cultural it was, what with it being a trading city and all that (However, he went to an international school there, so he might a bit a sheltered view...) It sounds a great place, and I will visit at some point, im sure. I have family buried out there from during the war, so I would like to be the first from my family to see where their buried.

Scotland is where the loch-ness monster can be found.
The Scottish accent is a little harder to understand than the Aussie and Brit accent imho. Its not the number of terms that they have, but by the sheer quirkyness in the way the Scots pronounce the words.
And most importantly, Scotland is where the greatest football manager was born, Sir Alex Ferguson.

These are stereotypes and comments that are popular in the region where I live:
Denmark- Pale people, cute Prince, cold, I think of Vikings for some reason, good pastries, quiet people...
Scotland- Red heads, kilts, Braveheart, brave fighters, Lochnesse monster, rolling green hills, cool accents, plaid...
France- Romance, Eiffel Tower, all things bread and wine, gondolas, snobbish, hate what others deem superior and believe themselves superior, guillotine and trebuchet, war, cute clothes, beautiful language...
England- Soccer/Football whatever, lots of liquor, bad teeth and big smiles, red coats, tea, very educated and intelligant, linguistically and diplomatically superior to the U.S., imperialism, war, (flag reminds me of the rebel flag of the South), muskets...
Australia- Kangaroos, very hard accents to impersonate, crocodiles, look like bounty hunters (b/c their rugged, dress like Han Solo ^_^), fun loving, dingos, alcoholic tribes, a popular place where I live...
Mexico- Breeders, welfare queens, marijuana, illegals, midwest, construction, rich history, malta, great food, Maya Empire, Zorro, Campamentos, La Migra, gangs, hard working, Chihuahuas...
U.S.- Oooo, this one is a toughy. There are PLENTY of stereotypes within the U.S....
West (California, Arizona, ect.)- Superficial, plastic surgery, Asians, Hollywood, New Age religions, rich and vain people, lots of gangs, earthquakes, volcanoes, forest fires, don't care about other regions...
Midwest (Texas, Oklahoma, ect.)- Cowboys, Native Americans, cattle branding, tequila, hard accent, fun loving and dare devils, country music, desert, coyotes, simple lives...
North (Massachusettes, New York, ect.)- Yankees, RUDE people (>_>), subways, gangs, mafia, and violence, drugs, boxing, expensive food, cocaine, loud mouths, don't get along with Southerners, Black Panther Party (I have no idea why)...
South (Tennessee, Georgia, ect.)- Overweight people, Soul food, lynchings, Rebels, Confederate flag, Elvis Presley, slavery, lots of poor people, Appalachia, the accent (oh god, the accent *shudders*), corrupt state governments, resentment towards Northerners, Dixie Land, Southern hospitality (impeccable hosts)...
Deep South (Mississippi, Louisianna, ect.) or Appalachia- Poverty, 'barefoot and pregnant', horrible education, racism and prejudice, swamps, alligators, corruption, Hurricane Katrina, Mardi Gras, casinos, underage marriage, "Sy-gogglin" WTF type of word is that?!, outcasts of American society ):
Florida! ^_^ (The only state that doesn't fit in any region)- Flamingos, alligators, Everglades, Hispanics, Hatians, Copacobana, Bush Gardens and Disney, old people, oranges, lovely beaches, hurricanes up the ass, gays and drag queens (south beach), nice grass, Al Gore, nudists...
Anyway, I've had the oppertunity to travel abroad enough to understand that allot of the negative stereotypes listed above are NOT true. (Although regional stereotypes of America hold a little more truth) Anyway, it's always good to travel with an open mind and not judge people before you meet them. You'd be surprised at how different people are...
(lol...wow...allot of people think Americans are overweight! Richard Simmons must be having a hay-day)
Wow....I really dont know many people who even LIKE our president :p

I geuss thats part of the problem, because there are plenty of sterotypes for all countires. People in from Glasgow (Working glass, drunk, uninteligable) have a differnent sterotype from people from orkney (Talk like scandinavians). The same goes for lots of different countries. Within each country, there are loads of smaller, regional sterotypes.
Apperently, the sterotype of my bit of Scotland (or at least the part I grew up in) is that we're all alcholic, inbred sheep-botherers. Hmmm.... :o I hope that not how the WHOLE of Scotland is seen...

NOW BRING ME BLONDES WITH HAIR EXTENSIONS AND BIG FAKE BOOBS!! YEEEHAW!!!" I think Americans should get out more and give a much better impression of ourselves >_<

England: The Office, Red Dwarf, Dr Who, Mighty Boosh, Orphan Feast, Expressionless guards, Earl Grey Tea
Denmark:....Hamlet?
Mexico: Tequila, Dont drink the water, Immigrants, beautiful beaches, drunk XP

Some words described as my first impressions about these countries when I remember them or someone speaks of them . Mine as follows :
Australia or Australian : lovely koala , green and yellow , hot Christmas day , strong British accent .
Japan or Japanese : robot , bow , manga , anime , poor princesses
France or French : Eiffel Tower , Louvre , perfume , whisper , Mr. Sarközy and Mr. Napoleon
As for the whole of Europe : beautiful scenery , fashion , football , Union
US or American : gun culture , big , fat , rugby , KFC , Coca-Cola
As for the events of being shot randomly and racism , my opinion is that they are two of most Gothic actions , but existing in US having more advanced knowledge and relative perfect education system . Almost countries in the world want to get an aid from US , but never wanting to be seen as ' proteges '. What is the role those countries want the US government to play ? What is the role the US government wants to play ?

Rugby is used in English , I clear know the sport called as American football in US , but due to the fact that American having Association football match or Soccer match now , just for avoiding misunderstanding from those who don't like football . :) Personally , I kind of don't understand why American football called as football , you know waht I mean , football match just needs to kick ball by foot , but American football played by hands for holding it to run through the whole field in most of time .
Whatever American accent or British accent , it's just to me , because I am not a native English speaker . Actually , I can understand who speaks with American accent quicker and easier than who speaks with British accent . I know that I need to make progress for the obstacle . :o But maybe you could not understand , since you are a native English speaker .
I often see that Australian wearing yellow T-shirts and green pants as they play football match , so that's my first impression about them . As for whether the 'yellow' is gold , I am not sure . But everyone has the right to be proud of whatever belonging to his country .

How about Holland? stereotype = everyone uses drugs, high all day, wear really old traditional clothing, wear clogs all day, only eat cheese, live in a (wind) mill and surrounded by flowers, mostly tulips, oow...and famous for Heineken.

eh, alot of Americans seem to think Asians in general are really smart, are really good at math, and are usually docile enough to do your work for you (see Harold and Kumar go to White Castle). It's such a misinterpretation. Just because we're nice and some of us are smart doesn't mean we all are. >.< Many a time have I heard, "You're Asian! How can you not get this?!"
