Biography
He is the 7th Seat of the Gotei 13's 4th Division. Hanatarō is very timid and nervous. His black hair is a bit long and his bangs frame his face. He tends to be clumsy and easily duped. Hanatarō's kind nature and nervousness results him becoming the victim of many bullies and practical jokes. In fact, he states in an omake chapter in volume 13 that he is "the most bullied kid in the world." Hanatarō's birthday is even on April Fools' Day, so people spend the whole day tricking him as a result.[2] While Hanatarō looks like a wimp, he shows on more than one occasion he is courageous and dedicated to what he believes in. According to Kon, he has "boring but somehow popular with the ladies" looks.

Hanatarō states when he introduces himself that his name is relatively easy to remember, though Ichigo says otherwise, stating that if his name was Hanako (a girl's name) or Tarō (a boy's name) it would be easy. The name Hanatarō, according to Ichigo, is just confusing. Hanatarō's name is actually a play on the name Yamada Tarō, the Japanese equivalent of John Doe, and Yamada Hanako, the Japanese equivalent of Jane Doe. By combining elements from both, Tite Kubo is probably saying Hanatarō is literally a complete nobody.

One of the qualities I admire most about Hanatarou is his endearing personality. He’s a very loyal and generous person, who gives more of himself than required. This is always done without hesitation and complaint, or expecting anything in return. Hanatarou is also naturally polite toward others, regardless of the position that individual may hold.

But it’s his unwavering courage, in which I have nothing but the utmost respect. One of the moments I found remarkable, the fact he was willing to confront Byakuya. Hanatarou knew he was overpowered to a considerable degree, but this didn’t matter to him one bit. Actions such as these really speak in volumes for his character. From a distance, he might appear fragile and weak, but a gentle heart is Hanatarou’s greatest strength. And that means more than anything.

I've only seen interaction between them on the Shingami Cup epi. Han appears to have a major crush on Capt. Unohana it was so cute :)

Yeah, I was just wondering about this as well. I can't really come up with anything that he can do during the major fights that should be coming up soon. Maybe after the fights we will see him healing people? But that would be a long time away. :cry At least we will be seeing him soon in the anime! :D

I concur. The 4th Division is a wonderful group and it’s great to see more support for them. Likewise, it’s such a shame they’re not featured often within the series, in comparison to other squads. Regardless of this, their importance to the Gotei 13 is something which cannot be underestimated.

sometimes i wish the 4th division would just make a statement like:
"if we weren't here, you wouldn't be either!"

That’s so true and I couldn’t agree more. If it wasn’t for the 4th Division’s skills, a lot of the other squads would be in a world of hurt. And I love that quote, a very nice job indeed. :)
