I absolutely love this pairing. Chapter 268 made me tear up because the relationship between them was so pure and sweet. He was everything to Rukia when she had nobody. I love this relationship because it reminds me how KT in a few chapters can create, and flesh out, deep bonds between people.

Yes, Kaien was everything to Rukia. She just wanted to be with him and didn't ask for anything else. That's why I like KaiRuki, because she was happy with their relationship as it was.
And it's true, we don't have many chapters about Kaien and Rukia. Kubo did a great job here, because even with this few chapters we can already love KaiRuki ^^

Rukia definitely loved Kaien. She was still a bit young at the time, so I think she was just beginning to discover what romantic love was. The page where Rukia says "Kaien-dono had a wife" in such a sad way makes it clear that it was more than just a sibling type of love, IMO.

Renji the love sick puppy brutalizes Rukia to the extent of choking her . It turns raw exchange of emotions . That time Rukia screams " Its my fault he died " You can argue she meant ichi actually she meant both in that brief moment of delirium . On the very next page Nii Sama pouts and tells her he does look like Kaien

Kaien is such a big part of Rukia's life and Ichigo hasn't even gotten to know about him yet. I'm sure we'll get to know more about Kaien and how is he similar to Ichigo in future. ^_^

About your question, spacecat, I actually think Rukia and Kaien had closure T_T
She resolved her guilt issue, and Kaien's speech about the heart was a nice way to know that he will go on living in her heart, since he didn't die alone, but with her at his side.

I think we could still have a one-panel flashback of him if Ichigo learns about him or we discover a secret about the Shiba family though :)

Welcome! I love their relationship a lot as well, it was unromantic, but it was everything so fulfilling, and Kaien was everything to Rukia who had nothing at the time. To lose him by killing him with her own hands is an especially harrowing experience for her. I would have been a staunch KaiRuki shipper if Kaien were alive. He would have been such a huge threat to Ichigo. HAH! He would never have had a chance with her. XD

I've been in love with the relationship between Kaien and Rukia for a very long time now. They have one of the most interesting relationships in the entire manga series, even on a non-romantic level. And both Kaien and Rukia are two of the most amazingly developed characters I have ever read.

So now as a topic starter, and just because I'm genurally curious I pose a question.

Do you prefer the KaiRuki romance to be requited or unrequited?

That may sound very strange as most people who support a pairing would of course want it to be mutual, and I would usually fall into that category but with KaiRuki it's different. I've read fanfiction where Kaien and Rukia are in a physical relationship and it just seems... well, strange, not exactly righton par I suppose. Kaien's a great guy and it's obvious Miyako meant the world to him so I just can't see him being in a real physical relationship with Rukia.

It's possible Kaien could of harbored something for Rukia but in my eyes it just seems very platonic from his side. Not to say it wasn't a passionate relationship but I think the one who held the real forbidden romantic feelings was Rukia, but that never stopped them from having a pure and strong friendship.

I see it as one-sided love, Kaien being something she could never really reach but gave her equal comfort and sorrow, I suppose how some might view the relationship between Renji and Rukia.

So what about the rest of the KaiRuki fans here?

I know it's strange for me as well, but the way I see it, the KaiRuki relationship is very special and even though it is unrequited, and they are not equals in this relationship, Kaien highly favoured Rukia, and this relationship has allowed for Rukia to grow. I want a relationship where people are able to grow from it, and though it may end up tragically in one way or another, the journey and growth from a relationship is precious to me.

The KaiRuki relationship lacks mutual romance. It is a selfless, unconditional and fulfilling companionship, comradeship and friendship. It is beautiful just the way it is. And even if Kaien were alive, I would still support this relationship in the way it is. No romance is required.

It's beautiful just as.

I agree with Ileenka. The time Rukia spent with Kaien was very important for her, even if her feelings weren't reciprocated. He accepted her as she was and that's what she needed. She learned so many important things because of him and I don't think that I would like their relationship if romance was involved. Rukia was happy and wouldn't have wanted a romantic relationship with Kaien either.
If Kaien were alive I would want him and Rukia to spend time together again, just like they did before - nothing more and nothing less.

Hi! I greatly enjoy this relationship of Rukia's (though only a little bit of it has actually been seen in the series) but I don't think it was particularly romantic on Rukia's side. She certainly admired Kaien, but whether or not that admiration lead to a certain level of adoration, which I do think it did, a little, remains to be seen. There has been nothing to suggest her falling in love with him, even on a crush level. In my opinion at least.

It's your opinion; I personally think that it has been hugely hinted that she was in love with him by the time she killed him (not in the ch268 flashback though). When she says "when I was with Kaien-dono, everything felt so right..." then closes sadly her eyes and bends her head, adding "Kaien-dono had a wife", I feel that it's clearly stating that she suffered from unrequited love.

Well Syn, before Rukia's fight with Aororino I would have been inclined to agree you, but once her fight happened Iwas a little bit confused. If she had romantic notions for Kaien prior, they should have resurfaced during that fight and they didn't appear to. SO I went back and re-read that chapter that had Rukia's kaien flashback... during that particular sequence when Rukia looks and and says 'Kaien-dono had a wife' the shot we see after of Kaien and Miyako appear to be aerial- meaning that Rukia is up somewhere (and I believe there's a panel that shows Rukia standing on a cliff soon after so assume they're in the 13th's training grounds) looking down at them, which explains the direction of her eyes. Had they been something more eye-level coupled with Rukia looking down, the discrepancy wouldn't exist then.

Yes, but it was a setting for her to be higher than them, so that she had to bend her head to look down at them. She still has that sad face right before she says "Kaien-dono had a wife" and the way Kubo made the page (right after she says everything felt right with him - the reader who reads this without knowing the story beforehand will feel it powerfully, as I was struck by this panel when I first read it; it screams unrequited love everywhere - I have also another theory, but that doesn't belong in this FC, so I won't talk about it).
And I think it's only natural that Rukia doesn't have the same feelings anymore for Kaien; she has evolved a lot since then.

There was no potential because Kaien is married. It's definitely an unrequited love. Still beautiful, nonetheless because she was extremely well-favoured by Kaien.

The poem is in reference to how a woman is crying over her brother who is going to war. The chapter itself, is filled with how Rukia's first days of training with Kaien and how the first seeds of feelings for Kaien grew from here.

Their relationship was never romantic. But it was heavily implied Rukia's feelings were.

That being said, you can ship them non-romantic, that is your choice. :) And welcome to the FC.

I finally got a chance to read all posts in this thread and thank you everyone for those beautiful fanarts/ fanfics/ poems :love and especially the discussion on the nature of Kaien-Rukia relationships. :yay My impression after reading the first Kairuki arc was that Rukia has/had romantic feelings towards Kaien, or at the very least a crush. I too thought that it was very pure, unrequited, platonic beautiful relationship.

The second mini arc made me wonder if it is an unrequited (albeit still platonic) love. Prior to the second arc I’ve always thought that the time they spend together was briefer. It turn out to be longer and the relationship deeper that I thought! Long enough for Kaien to personally train her and to witness her achieved her two shikai dances.

And then there was the way the story was told -- they walked on the sunlit meadows, had picnic and he talked about hearts and relationships, any other couple that would screams romance But on the other hand this happened very early in their relationship and it’s probably was a recollection of one of the most beautiful day in Rukia’s life. :cry

I find the choice of the “heart” in Kaien speech interesting. I just re-read the Kubo-Morita interview (Soul Vibes thread) in which mentioned Morita’s quote of “a story is born when people interact”. I am guessing that the quote is the genesis of Kaien’s beautiful “Every time we interact between us a heart is born” :wtf

And I do think it's an unrequited love. However, Kaien definitely showed favouritism towards Rukia. And it's probably because when she entered the academy she's always looking all gloomy and sad, and being Kaien, he wanted to cheer her up and be her friend.

And about the Kubo-Morita interview :wtf Interesting. I wonder whether he planned this part of the story before or after the interview.

:cry: :hug I dont understand it either, to me if a girl (Rukia) had experienced love with a wonderful guy (Kaien) and lost than love, in this case to the most tragic circumstances -- death. And then this girl met anothr guy (Ichigo) and fell in love with him, than that make the second guy special. Rukia had experienced the joy and the pain of love and if she chooses to risk her heart again to Ichigo, that makes this relationship more meaningful to me, much more than the case of a rose-tinted first love-crush (no matter how many lifetime it suppose to be) that crumbles in a face of a scary mask (if you get my meaning!)
Anyway I am hoping for Kaien to reappear even in a form of a bittersweet rememberance :wtf

I always believe that Rukia loved Kaien. Kaien cared for Rukia but I am not sure how deep his feeling ran because of his wife. In my mind their relationship was so close and they seem so familiar with each other in chapters 260 forward that there was bound to have been something between them.

I know Kaien loved to make friends but... the way he spoke to Rukia was special. I suposse the Kaien and Rukia relationship will always be shrouded in mistery.

It is pure, no jealousy, no drama, it is jsut a bittersweet tragic love story. It's so beautiful yet funny and it was adorable to see an embarrassed Rukia.
Kaien wasn't her weakness like it happens with most one-sided loves. He was her strenght and resolve and her reason to feel at home.
Also, there was no jealousy towards Miyako, just admiration.
These two proved me even only friendship/one-sided love can be beautiful and deep. I like their relationship.

It is pure, no jealousy, no drama, it is jsut a bittersweet tragic love story. It's so beautiful yet funny and it was adorable to see an embarrassed Rukia.
Kaien wasn't her weakness like it happens with most one-sided loves. He was her strenght and resolve and her reason to feel at home.
Also, there was no jealousy towards Miyako, just admiration.
These two proved me even only friendship/one-sided love can be beautiful and deep. I like their relationship.

Well, I've only recently become a KaiRuki fan, but I love the dialog they had when he died. It really was so important to him that he could leave his heart with someone he cared for, and it's so beautiful that even though Kaien is gone, Rukia carries him in her heart always :cry
It's the most beautiful tragic story :cry It was like everything he taught her about death and his philosophy on leaving your heart with your loved ones just built up to his own death. I think she was the most indicated to kill him at that moment when the hollow took over his body.
But I can't help but think what would have happened had Kaien survived...

I really did hope that Kaien was back when Aaroniero showed up looking like him :XD The way "Kaien" looked at her was very sweet... too bad it wasn't really him :(

My favourite one is when they meet each other because Rukia realizes(from the very beginning) that Kaien will be what she was searching for. She said "this is the familiarity I wanted to find blah blah"
It is a funny moment, yet deep and of course important for Rukia.
From Kaien's side, I will follow the rest of you. May be bannal but when he said that he leaves his heart to her, I cried. He was on the verge of death, it hurt him a lot but he still wasn't selfish, wasn't blaming Rukia and he even remembred what he had said to her. It was too bittersweet and I love it!

although most was one-sided I think he had an inkling of feelings beyond friendship toward her. I don't know, it's just that I don't think he trains every new member in the squad personally. I'm not so sure. We already saw Rukia's reaction-she was stunned but surprisingly, she didn't cry when seeing him first. She is not sentimental but this is KAIEN! She was her first love, the only person who cared for her, her best friend and a mentor, he died by her own hands, she had to carry the guilt for so long...but she didn't even shed a tear in the beginning. She is a strong person, my Rukia.
As for Kaien, I have no idea. Knowing him and his funny attitude, he'd go "Oh, Kuchiki, ya doing well" He often acts like a dork. Lacking common sense is cute isn't it.
It will be a tearful reunion.

I don't think Kubo will use any comedian scenes for such a serious and heart-breaking(well not exactly :D) moment! At least he didn't do it the first time, even if I would like it in fact. I prefer sadder reunion but a funny one is OK too as long as it's KaiRuki.

He was suffering. He was killing one of his subordinates and someone he cares for A LOT, he is a guy who will never bear with the though that he'd kill a girl, that someone has sacrificed her own life! Maybe Rukia knew that or maybe she did because she was in panic and too young. But it was a thing she should have done in my opinion. I miss him, but it's plotkai and it was beautiful and nessecary. :cookie

How long ago do you think it's been since Kaien's death?

Was it decades and decades ago, or recently? Personally, I think it probably happened about 10-15 years previously, since Rukia and Kaien had obviously set up a good history between them before his death, and Rukia's been a shinigami for 50-ish years.
