~ About Unohana ~

Unohana was initially one of the worst criminals within the Soul Society. However, a 1000 years ago, Yamamoto decided to recruit her within his organization, the Gotei 13. The only wound she has was given to her by Kenpachi Zaraki. The former 11th Division captain switched over to the 4th Division sometime later. There, joined by Ukitake and Kyoraku, the three are the senior-most captains within the Gotei 13. She is also referred to as 'senpai' by Ukitake. During 110 years ago, she was opposed to staying behind while Hirako and the Visoreds went to fight and unknown foe. Later, when Ichigo and his friends invade the Soul Society, she is the one who initially discovers Aizens' plot. Following Aizen's attack on Karakura Town, Unohana leaves with Ichigo and heals him, saying he is their last hope. Currently, she is critically injured having fought against Kenpachi Zaraki.

Unohana is the Soul Society's best healer, as well as best swordsman, something she keeps under wraps. She is a young, youthful woman despite her age. She has shown to be gentle, kind and compassionate, willing to avoid bloodshed whenever possible. Always appearing calm and collected, Unohana is able to analyze many situations with ease. Her graceful nature is shown even in combat.
I believe she isn't dead, and nor will she die. Just wait for it.

Yay! I've been so bored without this place...I've had nowhere to talk about anything Bleach related, but its nice to be back!

Though, it can make you a bit anxious, especially since Bleach is now on Isshin and Masaki's story, something I am curious about, but at the same time Unohana as well.
I can easily see her waking up with Isane crying out of relief that she's ok.

What do you like about Unohana?

And me too. Although this flashback seems to pertain to Isshin and Masaki, I wouldn't complain if we saw Unohana too. Though I'm sure she'll turn up in the next few chapters as well.

My favorite thing about Unohana has always been the "Captain Mom" aspect of her. Without making a single threat or raising her voice, she is able to demand respect, and not only from the members of her division; but also her fellow captains. She's quiet and reserved, but you just know that she's someone you don't want to cross. I've been an Unohana fan since Bleach started.

At first I wasn't really a fan of the thought of her being the first Kenpachi. At first she wasn't anything like her Retsu self, but as the chapters progressed, Kubo found a good balance between the personalities of Retsu and Yachiru. I also don't believe Unohana is dead. Characters have survived much worse in Bleach, and also Shunsui knows what could happen in this fight. He isn't just going to let them go down there and then forget about them.

And also, everyone knows Kubo doesn't kill female characters...ever lol

Oh, for sure! Kubo did in fact, intertwine the 'genuine elegance' even with 'Yachiru' Unohana. You could tell by how she fought, seemed almost very graceful for something so bloody. And I agree, I don't think she's dead either. It's simply a matter of waiting. Since she was wounded it what looked to be the same spot twice, and she IS a healer, there's no reason for her not to survive. It could only serve to hinder the plot if you ask me.

I think the death was a metaphorical death. I think Yachiru had to die, in order for Retsu to live. I think This'll probably be the only fight we see out of her, sadly.

Whether it's her last fight or not, I do agree with you. She realized there was no need for two Kenpachi's, so 'Yachiru' had to die. Couldn't have said it better :) And to be honest, it's easier to see her as Captain Mom - she'll always be - regardless.

Exactly! How could you not like captain mom? Even Aizen didn't want to mess with her lol. Remember he told Gin not to attack her.

Haha XD Aizen might be arrogant, but he isn't stupid. He - everyone - knows not to mess with Unohana. Ukitake commented on that as well during the TBTP arc when Kyoraku forgot to mention her, he reminded him that 'You forgot senpai. She'd be livid if she knew,' to which he laughed afterward.
A character like that doesn't die. Especially not as fodder for some other character.

Oh, I forgot about that! Oh Shunsui, you scamp! Indeed, Unohana is a monument that shan't be toppled for the gain of another.

After all, she has more experience in battle, and in healing than anyone else in the Soul Society. It's safe to say she's the most powerful shinigami, even more so than Kyoraku or Ukitake. Hopefully we find out more about that timeline between the three of them since they are undoubtably the three most powerful, but Uno has too much going for her to not live, anyway.

Well, if you look at their stat points from the official data book Unohana is the strongest, followed closely by Shunsui, and Ukitake is somewhere among the rest of the captains.

That's mainly because Ukitake is ill, otherwise his would be similar to Unohana and Kyoraku.
So a few questions for everyone while we wait for her to return to the manga :o (we still don't know anything about how her bankai works. That's one reason I think she'll still live.)
1. What do you think? Is she alive? Or was Kenpachi too much for her to handle?
2. What would you like to see from her in the future - more fighting, or taking on a much more prominent role as both a healer and a fighter?
3. What do you think her bankai does based on its initial release, since we don't know what its abilities are?

I think she is alive. She is too valuable to SS to let die like this. I personally would like to see her do both. It'd be a shame to get this teaser about her and never see her fight again. I have a theory about her zan. I believe that it has the ability to revive the dead. I originally got the idea from when Hitsugaya fought Aizen in the C46 chambers. Hitsugaya was dead, his eyes were empty. Unohana drew her zan and then the room was filled with light and energy. Hitsugaya is alive and well to our knowledge. So, yeah. lol

So do I, which is why I think she'll play a more integral role as both a healer and fighter (maybe also curing Ukitake?). And I think her bankai has the ability to rot/kill anything that it touches based on how it liquifies.

I think (hope) she is alive. This can't be all there is to her character, or I will be really really disappointed. And come on, we didn't even get to see her bankai properly! All the hype about how powerful she is, first Kenpachi and all, and she dies like this? Not possible... And even her death panel pissed me off a little bit, she said something like she has nothing more left. So.. her life was basically just to pump up Zaraki to his full potential? How is that possible... Don't get me wrong, Zaraki is my favourite character by far but even I think that if Unohana dies from this, it's just.. no. Waste of a character in my opinion.
I hope in the future she will do both, healing and fighting. Mostly healing maybe, but in the final battle she will step up and show everybody how awesome first Kenpachi is! Maybe fighting side by side with Zaraki... One can only dream.
I have no idea about her bankai.. Maybe it somehow absorbs and changes the persons reiatsu, making them vulnerable for attacking? And at the same time gives more power to Unohana. This is such a crack theory, since I have nothing to base it on... Didn't get much info of that couple of panels Kubo showed us. I'm not bitter or anything.

Sorry I have a lot of anger about this subject... :D But so nice to see this fanclub up and running! <3

And it's alright to vent, since this is the Unohana FC, after all. A character who got such hype to be cast off like that? I agree, it seems like such a waste. Sadly though, we've probably got a decent wait before we find anything out.

Yeah that waiting-part makes me sad also, I wouldn't be surprised that Kubo will make us wait half a year, hopefully not even a year... But I really hope she is alive and we will learn more about her, for example how she learned her skills and why she was biggest villain in Soul Society at one point. Ok, it might be the fact that she just wanted to find an opponent strong enough to fight but I hope that there is another reason for her than just that.

I just want answers. :p

Although if it shifts back to the Soul Society, I think she'll be one of the first people we see, or at least, hear about.

Yeah I think so too! Maybe Kyoraku waiting outside Muken or something similar and then Unohana and Zaraki stepping out of the doors.. I'm sure that's the most important thing at the moment in Soul Society to look at, how their battle ended. Kyoraku did state that the first thing he needs to do as a captain-commander is teach Zaraki the art of killing and I'm sure he wants to know what happened to them as soon as possible.

I just hope it ended well for both of them. ;__;

Well, we know Zaraki is alive - Unohana is too because she didn't DIE in the chapter, only said 'she could die knowing that he had been released', so technically, as of now, both are alive until otherwise stated by Kubo.

I am sure she is still alive. Kubo has often made us think characters are dying only to resurrect them soon afterward... look at Byakuya for example. He would give her a much longer backstory arc if she were truly gone IMHO. Compare with Yama-jii's death...

Kubo had been hinting around about how scary she was for years. There's much more to be said about her.

Her backstory was merely the tip of the iceberg. There are still many unaswered questions and we know to little. That, and Kubo said he would explain how her bankai worked. We have seen it, but we don't know HOW it works. That's one of the biggest reasons I think we'll be seeing much more of her later on.

That's a great point, Xianghua! :) Her bankai definitely needs more elaboration.

Her story just feels very incomplete to me at this point. I want to know MOAR! :mad:

All we know is that is starts to liquify, and based on its name, sounds pretty deadly. That's why I think whatever the liquified zanpakto touches rots.
But we don't know, and Kubo WILL elaborate on it, just not right now, I guess. He wouldn't show us in a flashback, (which he never has), that means Unohana is bound to make a full and healthy return at some point :)

I hope her return will happen soon, I'm itching to know more and see her fighting with her Kenpachi-skills.. Maybe she will even continue coaching Zaraki for a while? After all, she is the most baddest badass in Soul Society. :D Or maybe she will return to her healing-post.. I don't actually know which option I would like more, the healer-Unohana or Kenpachi-Unohana.

Oh Kubo please don't make us wait too long.

And to answer Xianghua's question,

I think she's still alive. So many characters in Bleach appear to die, but then come back. After what happened with Byakuya and the symbolism of the single petal, all bets are off. People were certain Byakuya was dead, and he came back. Unohana's death was less poetic than Byakuya's and we didn't see a full backstory.

So I believe she's still alive. I'll continue to believe that until Kubo confirms her death the way he did Gin's and Ulquiorra's, or until we see an elaborate funeral and backstory.

We still haven't seen evidence of her being the "most heinous criminal in Soul Society," either. ;)
